Have you checked out Solid!: The d20 Blaxsploitation Experience?
A great book! Shame it never got around as much as it's heroes. My wife ran an excellent Cleopatra Jones style police woman named "Honey Pott". That was awesome. Our mate, who is as Black as they come, thought it was the best RPG book he'd ever read.
Peace,

Dyn-O-Mite!
When P20 gets off the ground, I'll definitely be updating it. Also thinking about doing a Savage Worlds edition.

I've already contacted a lot of my old RPG friends about this project, but I'm not sure where else to spread the word to...
Im picturing Urizen at work "So the quarterly reports are looking good for first and second...by the way if you like modern gaming, please have a look at kickstarter.com where the new amazing p20 modern project is being started as a patronage project [que powerpoint presentation on the overhead]"

Louis Agresta wrote:How about a mini? That's actually a really good idea. It would be a BAD idea to use a gag like this for cover art, but there's a pretty long tradition of gag minis. It would be great to sell (and/or give away at conventions) as a launch promotion. Now we just need to come up with a name for him (no, not "Sex Machine," a REAL name). I'm thinking it should be something that sounds like a character from a blacksploitation flick. Once he has a name, he can be the unofficial mascot of P20 fundraising.
How about Gnolldingo or Johnny Urge?

Wow. Part of my brain thinks, "That is pure, 100% awesome!" and the other part of my brain thinks, "That is so wrong!" Both parts agree on one thing: "I can't believe somebody actually made that!"
I think I would love to play in a campaign like that, but I could never DM it, because the whole time in the back of my mind I would picture myself as the executive in that Sprint commercial from a few years ago:
Boss: It's my way of sticking it to the man.
Assistant: But sir, you are the man.
Boss: I know.
Assistant: So you're sticking it to yourself?
Boss: Ummm...maybe.
I still think Pooky is a great name.
It's funny, but the joke has been overdone, from "Little John" in Robin Hood, to the guy in high school who got nicknamed "screamer" because he hardly ever spoke, and was very quiet when he did.
How about Gnolldingo or Johnny Urge?
Not bad. Is there some kind of reference in "Johnny Urge," or did you just like the way it sounds?
I was thinking maybe "Harold Savage." He insists on using his full first name, and whenever anybody calls him "Harry," he flies off the handle and gets violent unless a friend restrains him.
I also like the way "Leroy Feral" sounds, but it lacks the personality quirk that comes with "Harold."
Any other suggestions?

Leroy Feral is pretty funny.
Urge just links the huge codpiece to sexual urges, and the name also refers to the blaxploitation flick Johnny Tough.

I already posted this in the Yahoo group, but I'll do so here again, in case any "Paizoans" want to respond, too.
Will we be seeing a type of "progress scale" for the equipment and weapons in P20 Modern? Something akin to the progress levels in Alternity. And if not - why not?! ;p
Peace,

Just a reminder that the audio live-chat starts in just a few hours. We're looking forward to seeing you fine folks there ... and hopefully answering a bunch of your questions.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend live, but will there be a recording available afterwards?
As for questions:
1) what are your initial thoughts on the wealth system? Will you be completly doing away with the D20 Modern one (hopefully yes!), or just modifying it?
2) Beyond modern/high tech, what rules sets do you plan to include? Magic? Psionics? Future tech? Anything else?

I think it should be a woman, along the lines of Lara Croft, only better looking and with a way cooler name that's reminiscent of pulp era heroines.
I'm sorry, but this really made me laugh when I read it, because of the image that popped into my mind:
A hot female gnoll (whatever that means) with unrealistically large, gravity-defying breasts, dressed in a tight white baby-doll t-shirt, short-shorts, dozens of gold chains, and--of course--a nuclear powered, robotic, flame-throwing, tinfoil-wrapped armadillo-cucumber-hybrid codpiece. She would somehow manage to balance a boombox on her shoulder while simultaneously wielding a sub-machinegun and two heavy-caliber semi-automatic pistols, all while performing complex acrobatics and keeping up a witty banter. Her name would be something like "Dejah Ravenwood" or "Marion Thoris."

Stop it. You're making me hot.
How about "De La Marion" in paen to De La Soul, and she's "De La" to her friends.
Won't be able to make the chat -- new baby and wife to support -- but have an awesome time!

The show should be archived and available on the same show page I linked to earlier.
And we at least TOUCHED on the questions you asked ... though, as with most answers on this project, they both circled around "it depends a lot on what the patrons want" with health dollops of each Genius's personal opinions.

I wasn't able to listen in real-time, but I managed to find some time today to listen to the whole show. Great stuff!
Sex Machine the gnoll did come up in conversation, too. ;P
And since the designers are calling him "Sex Machine," that must be his name. That's the patronage system in action: several of us gave input, and the designers made a choice. ;)
But "Sex Machine" is a real name - haven't you seen From Dusk Till Dawn?
Indeed...and congratulations on naming the Gnoll!
For those of you who wish to discuss Sex Machine in polite conversation, I recommend the aliases "James Brown" (who made the term famous, and who has evidently risen as undead) or "Tom Savini" (who played "Sex Machine" in "From Dusk Till Dawn")

First, thanks (to you and ALL the people who've pledged money).
Second, discussions have not begun in earnest because we're waiting to see if the project gets funded ... and then so that ALL the patrons can participate in the process.
Certainly, we've had some conversations amongst just the Geniuses about our THOUGHTS on various matters ... but mostly that is so that we know what our individual starting positions will be. No one is so devoted to ANY idea yet expressed that we can say for certain they will be part of the final mechanics ... except the broadest principles we talk about at the kickstarter page.
We discussed some of these during the recent episode of Super Genius Radio, though, so you can go listen to that if you want to hear some of what we're thinking.
We ARE planning to have at least one more episode (hopefully two) of Super Genius Radio during the course of the fundraising drive ... and we'll announce those here (among other places). If you can manage to tune in live, you can ask whatever specific questions you like.

Super Genius Radio
I find your voices strangely soothing.... ;p
I've really enjoyed both shows so far - their unscripted nature makes them a lot more enjoyable than the RPG podcasts I also listen to. Looking forward to the next one, but mostly to getting P20 Modern off the ground!
Peace,

I'm sure I am not the only one of us that is concerned that we wont reach the patron goal by the deadline. I was thinking maybe we could do a little brainstorming on how we can further spread the word. Any ideas?
There's a lot of truth to the idea that a significant amount of support for Kickstarter projects flows in right before the deadline.
For example, I'm also backing the Patrons of the Monstrous Arts project. Three days ago, it was about $600, or almost a third of the way, from reaching its goal. Now it's exceeded its goal with three days left.
I'm not at all worried about the P20 project being fully funded by its deadline. 8)

Kolokotroni |

I dunno. I won't deny that I've been thinking the same thing Kolokotroni on this. e20 was for 10k, while Monsterous Arts was for 2k. We're talking ... 70k here. The funding has only reached 10% of its goal.
I realize that there's a rush when it gets closer, but still...
Its pretty clear that if its going to go forward as we all envision, SGG wants it to be a flagship product, which explains the fundraising goal. I've spread it to as many people as I could, but alot of them dont want to be patrons but would be willing to buy the product. I believe the guys at SGG when they say that this is the goal they set to produce a top of the line product. I just would like to see if any of us have ideas on how to make it more likely to succeed.
I have for instance arranged a demo game of pathfinder at a local store with something of a catch, all my pregens are super genious classes. My hope is if people see the work for pathfinder and like it, they might be more interested in P20 modern. Its kind of a long shot, but it'll be fun regardless.

Gary Sarli |

For what it's worth, I've been sharing my experiences and ideas with the SGG crew, hoping they can learn from what seems to have worked for e20 (and, more importantly, what I think didn't work). By the time all was said and done, e20 ended up raising more than any other game in Kickstarter history, and the second most for a writing project of any kind, so there is a lot of potential for this to change the way smaller publishers make games. (Yes, P20 will completely blow these records out of the water if it hits its goal, but it is definitely going to be a challenge all the way to the finish line.)
Make sure you spread the word via every means you have at your disposal -- tell everyone you know, promote it to your local game store (maybe the owner would become a patron or at least let you put up a flier), suggest the topic to gaming blogs and podcasts, talk about it on every message board you can think of, talk about it on Facebook and twitter (sharing and retweeting things from the SGG crew), make the most of digg, stumbleupon, etc., and just never stop looking for one more person who might be interested.
You still have six weeks to make this happen, and the potential is definitely there. For what it's worth, 92% of projects that reach 25% funding ultimately go on to be successful, so start with that benchmark as a short-term goal; if you can hit that, the project might have the critical mass to make it over the finish line.

Brian E. Harris |

I guess I should pay more attention to the boards, but I am behind this 1000%! This is a great idea, and I know several people that would definitely buy a copy. Count me in!

We've been a little quiet for the past couple of weeks as we attended the GAMA Trade Show and focused on some SGG products that aren't P20 Modern ... but back-room discussions have continued. Now, as we have less than a month to go on the patronage drive, it's time to return the spotlight to this project.
Tomorrow night we will host another Super Genius Radio audio live-chat focused on the P20 Modern project and our kickstarter.com fund drive.
I know tomorrow is April Fool's Day, but this is NOT a joke. We will be webcasting live on Thursday, April 1st starting at 6pm PDT (GMT -8) and go on for an hour. There will be a live chat room for you to submit questions and interact with us during the show. (And we might even sort out the phone system so that you can CALL IN and talk to us live.)
You can listen to the show live (or come back later and listen to the recording) here:
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/stannex/2010/04/02/super-genius-radio--p20-mod ern-update
Please help us spread the word about the show ... and then come join us.

I wonder if Paizo would put a blurb up on the front page about this? Or maybe this and e20 - Pathfinder related patronage products in general? I bet there is a large segment of the Paizo community that doesn't even know P20 Modern exists (or is about to exist). Maybe some day when the store is slow and there are no new product releases.
