1st! oh wait, I created it.
OK SO far we have
Grufflehead
Black Tom
Nightflier
Vinsane
A couple of my other PbP's have slowed down and I have a hard time resisting Earthdawn in any incarnation. Count me in, unless you get others playing in less games.

Excellent, the more the merrier!
You need lots of victims to feed horr...wait, you need lots of heroes to defeat horrors!!

Would like to add my name to the mix if possible. Have all the books, but am very light on the setting - will need several days to try and put a character together (though I'm leaning towards a warrior-type, likely dwarven or elven).

No problem not knowing the full setting, I'll be having you come from a Kaer that has been sealed until recently. So your knowledge of the outside world will be limited as it is.
You have all the 3rd edition books?
(nice, I don't even have all the 3e stuff yet.)

I'm thinking about a Windling Magic user of some sort. Either Wizard, elementalist, or Nethermancer.

Sounds good.
Kind of went on an early Christmas shopping session and picked up all the new 3e books (also have some of the older 2e stuff from Stiggybaby).

I've got an almost complete set of 1e Earthdawn, and a couple of Living Room games 2e Earthdawn books.
A little history on me and Earthdawn. I remember when it came out, but since I was collecting Shadowrun & D&D books at that point, I never got it. In 95, I had the best Earthdawn GM ever...I fell in love with the system and started buying 1e books. (few at first since my GM didn't want us to know everything about the rules, which made it pretty awesome.) I quit D&D 2e and kept up with Earthdawn...
I ran a pretty fun game a few years back, unfortunately time was our enemy and we had to split the game up. I had actually created a a flaw/advantage system for Earthdawn at the time, I'll probably update it to 3e at a later date though.
That was a pretty fun game, I had called it "Under the Shadow of the Mountain."

Who needs help?
almost finished, but...In the earlier editions Windlings weren't allowed to be Nethermancers. I saw in 3rd edition it is the GM's call but will require a good backstory to explain why these live loving creatures might become obsessed with death, and summoning. I've come up with a pretty cool story to explain that but if you'd rather me play an elementalist, I could switch the character without too much trouble. I haven't picked spells yet which is the big difference.

Hmmm, let's hear the tale...Afterall, Earthdawn is about Telling of Legends...What's the start of yours?
Still working out the details, but basically Izen's ancestors were on a trading mission to a Dwarven cairn when horrors attacked and the Carin had to be sealed. In the beginning the group of 9 Windling traders fit right into the dwarven society, but over the years the lack of life, and living things drove the group into depression. The only joy was the occasional marriage and birth of children. Over the years the group was finally reduced to one couple and their child Izen. A horror worked it's way into the Cairn, and decimated much of the population before it was killed. Izen's parents were killed in the battle along with much of the dwarven population.
Izen was too young to remember much of his parents, but he was adopted by a Dwarven Nethermancer whom had been Widowed in the battle, and lost her only child as well. With no one to remind Izen of life, and teach him the ways of life and freedom, he learned to find joy in the craft of Nethermancy. To him it is his joy in life...It has replaced nature and freedom, as he has never known them anyway. He is still very happy go lucky just has an unusual approach to life...and for that matter death.

I have Player's Compendium and Nations of Barsaive. Do I need something else to play? I have a friend who sells used books, so I can probably find a lot of things rather cheaply.
Red Brick versions? Because I'm going to be running the new 3rd edition. (Though there are only a few changes that I know of between EDC and 3e.)
How is character gen handled in EDC?

The book is from 2006. although I think I'll have to bow out of this game. The rules are completely unfamiliar to me and I'll not have the time to learn them till the end of the month. I'm really sorry. My work obligations just got more serious.

No need to bow out, the rules are not that difficult, all you need to do is pick a race/discipline and I can create a character for you. Then you can sit back and RP.

Okay.. I'm all caught up! I'll try to have a race and character concept tomorrow.
The very one time I ever got to play, the GM suggested we all be from the same Cairn.. that way we all had a loose and flexible common backstory. Having come from the same community. That doesn't restrict anybody, but it does tie them together and gives the GM a common backstory to draw from.
For example, I might play a dwarf from the same Cairn that Izen came from. Others might do likewise.. or the Cairn might have just been prodominantly dwarven, but having a small population of other races as well.

That's why I finally mentioned it heh.
I pronounce it "Kai-Ear"
and welcome aboard Watcher!!!
You have the books, so are you going to go ahead and create your full character?
Actually, I have the PDfs of 3rd.. And some printed copies of EDC..
(It looks a lot like EDC 2.5 to me, but with their new deal with Mongoose, I can appreciate that they want a fresh print run)
But I never got to play. A friend ran a kick a$$ demo game, and then quit after he convinced us all what a great game it was. I was kinda bummed.

I didn't get the EDC books since they were out of my price range, I did get the LRG 2nd ed.
I like the changes I've seen so far though.
Earthdawn is my favorite RPG. It's amazing how much d20 has taken from ED. (Legendary weapons look a lot like thread items; 4eD&D all classes have a power source, kinda like adepts...etc)
It's great that Mongoose is publishing Earthdawn now, brings it back to us! heh.

I'm interested in Elf Warrior, but it seems to me that there are a lot of people here who know and love this game. So I feel kind of bad to take their place when I don't know enough even to create a character. So... I'll miss this one and just follow the game. Have a nice time, everybody.
Nightflier, as you wish, please follow the game, and once you feel you're ready to join, by all means speak up and jump in.
Grufflehead
Black Tom
Nightflier [lurker]

Kendrosmeren
Well that's enough to have a nice group.

Txoro of Barsaive |

I'm game, but since I don't have the book, maybe you will need to create a character for me to get started. I would like to play a magician of some sort (Wizard/Nethermancer/Elementalist), possibly a T'Skrang (Dwarf, Elf or Human would work too).
T'skrang Elementalist sound OK then? Possibly Wizard if you prefer, but we're already going to have a nethermancer, so let's not doulbe up on the disciplines just yet.

Watcher |

Ideas I am kicking around are Scout, Swordsman, and Weaponsmith.. I'm also thinking about a Troubador.
I don't have my heart set on anything yet.. but the magic types seem to be solidly represented, and one other person has expressed interest in a warrior type.
Any suggestions from the GM?

In My profile I have created the basic character sheet information. (weapons will be updated later.)
Black Tom, this is your T'skrang (in my profile), I gave him Cooking as an Artisan Skill instead of Robe Embroidery or Sculpting, so you can cook the famous T'skrang Spiced Fish when you have the oportunity. I went ahead and gave you the Swimming/Unarmed Attack/Pilot Boat and Read River to kind of work the life of a young T'skrang into your skills.
A note on the notation used in the Cahracter sheet
Skill/Talent:
(1)/8(2d6) would be (rank)/STEP#(Action Dice)

Txoro, I have no specific preference for race or discipline. Here are some of my ideas:
1) Thief (half dwarf/half human - as short as a dwarf, but human appearance)
2) Warrior (Troll)
3) Woodsman (Elf) - from Denizens of Earthdawn, Vol. 1 (I don't know how much conversion would be necessary to 3e, so disregard idea if the party has/needs a scout instead)
4) Archer (Elf or Human)

Got back from work today to find a card through the door saying the postman had tried to deliver a package while I was at work but it was 'too big to fit through the letterbox' - sounds like a big, juicy RPG book to me!
Of course, by the time I'm getting my hands on it (I should be able to collect it tomorrow) and creating a PC, I'll soon be heading off for my enforced 10 day break from civilisation. Ah well, I'll just have to stand mutely in the background for a while.
So we've got 2 spellcasters, a scout and a warrior, so sounds like a bit more fight power is needed. I'll refresh my memory from my 1st Ed books and try something like a Swordsmaster, Archer (although I'm playing an archer in another pbp) or another warrior if I can make it different enough from AJ's.
I seem to remember ED was a little limited in options for making any of the disciplines significantly different as you prety much had to take the class discipline talents if you wanted to progress and learn higher level talents - is that still a fair summation of the way it works?

Nope, They added a pool of talents to choose from to allow you to choose one from each level. In addition they give you 8 free general skills to pick up skills that emulate many of the talents, (though without the magic aspect, which modifies them slightly. (like great leap is feet instead of yards. But for combat purposes I think 18" would be better, since that would translate into the new hex system, of 2 yards better.)
So, while you might start very similar to another warrior at 1st circle, by the time you reach 4th or 5th circle, you're could be much different.
And actually AJ said warrior type...so that could be any of the melee types I think. Sky Raider, Warrior, Swordmaster, Archer.
No one wants to be a Weaponsmith thus far.

Phew, I missed a lot. Ok so I'm kind of in the mindset of relating to other players. My favorite character is T'skrang SwordMaster, and if you want me to go that route, I wouldn't mind being related to Black Tom's Character.
I also like the idea of branching out to something else, a dwarf that challenges Rollo Redbeard's claim to the heir of the Scythan Nation. Probably a warrior. I don't know if that would work into Scranford's character concept.
Or he could not be related in either case. Just ideas for characters.
I don't have any of the 3e books, I have almost everything before that though.
