I feel that the bonus spells offered by a familiar, especially the first one offered at second level, will make a great impact on which familiar a witch chooses. However, many of the familiars offer pretty unattractive second level bonus spells which will undoubtedly affect their popularity. Spells like the fox's animate rope or the snake's shocking grasp are far more interesting and more likely to be used than the toad's or the cat's jump.
I think that familiar spells should be rethought to make all familiar options more attractive.

I don't know, I think adding a Bonus Slot only used for this Familiar Spell (like Domain Spells) would at least make it so you aren't giving up a normal spell to actually make use of Jump. Without that opportunity cost, alot more players would think maybe they COULD make use of it SOMETIMES. I hope if this is implemented, that it DOES still get added to regular spells-known list for allowing parlallel/multiple slots to be used and so forth (unlike Domains).
I definitely agree with the over-all gist though, I'd rather not see players given excess motivation to ditch their familiars at certain level-marks just because that's where one familiar's advantage tapers off and where another one starts to kick in. I'm all for being able to choose new familiars at different points, but it shouldn't be such a stark choice over 'this is useless until X level/ that is awesome until Z is available'.
