Is there origami in Golarion?

Here's the scenario: A wizard NPC has charmed a waitress to deliver the PCs drinks with notes attached. I thought it would be fun if the notes, or "Cayden Cailean's toasts" were origami heads perched like they were sipping drinks. Is it within Golarion's character to have developed origami?

Liberty's Edge

Sure, why not! Golarion is everything your campaign need it to be! I am sure TIAN has developed far more than "simple" Origami...

THere are counterparts of china and japan in Golarion and both cultures had paper folding arts. So it is reasonable to think they have those since it has already been stated they have a strong tea culture.

I'll answer your question with a question. Is there origami in YOUR Golarion?

I see my work was already done.

But since I already went to the trouble of hitting that reply button (which I did after I saw that my work was already done, so apparently I just like to hear myself talking, or, in this instance, read myself writing), I'll reiterate:

Golarion has what you want it to have.

If you want origami there, there's origami there. If you want some island country where people enjoy their ale warm, it's there.

An important part of roleplaying is to make the game your own. Incorporate whatever you want.

For example, we have several Firefly fans in our group, so "gorram" has become an official cussword, and "grappling" has received a second meaning. A GM incorporated words like "sigul" and phrases like "thankee-sai" and "long days and pleasant nights" after reading the Dark Tower, and I've been known to have noble houses similar in style to those found in Song of Ice and Fire (complete with "house words", or the "it is known" mantra)

I happened to watch a great TED video about the intersection of math and origami the other day..

There certainly is origami in Golarion!

I am not sure I would call what ogres do to 1st level commoners in their spare time as orgiami, but if James says so.....

Technically, in "Golarion" the closest you can get is "Oragoni"

Ogres do that to everyone, or at least try.

And James is always right, all hail James!

Silver Crusade

Thanks for the official response, James, but did we really need one?

I think James may also be tipping his hand that there may be origami in some not-yet-published-but-currently-in-development supplement....

...or some weird, mind-shattering result when the rulebooks and adventures are folded and assembled in the proper manner.

Dark Archive

Are we talking about regular Origami or magical origami where after you create the thing it magically becomes real to smite your foes?

Liberty's Edge

Now I fear that - one day - all my Paizo books begin folding themselves into a Origami-Golem, looking like the Paizo golem... *shudders* ... what will be that Golems orders then...?

He's revealing the new base class -- the Paper Folder. ('Origamiist' was found too awkward.) At each level, the Paper Folder learns a new fold, allowing them to add four more objects or animals to their list.

Unlike most spellcasters, the Paper Folder is limited only by their supply of magically enhanced Washi and the time it takes them to fold a creature. They can only pre-fold one creature at a time. (The Quick Folding and Extra pockets feats can be selected after level 6.)

Preliminary playtesters claimed the class was overpowered because of the unlimited folds per day but then the DMs rediscovered wandering monsters tables. Suddenly the other members of the party were abandoning the Paper Folders in the corridors of dungeons, working on the open double sink fold as gelatinous cubes, carrion crawlers, and groups of bandits wandered up.

Now i have this image of a wizard being irate because the party's gnome got bored and folded all of his scrolls into various origami animals.

"What are you doing?!"
"Making a crane. See. When I pull on the tail the wings flap. That realy nice Tian woman showed me how to do it."
*wizard storms off fuming*

Of only they had called it Goareon, it would have been so much spicier that way!

We call about how some lord swears that he will never order, in spoken or written word, nor in charade or otherwise gesture, the death of another.

And then he folds a perfect replica of that man - without a head.

Actually, despite some of the weaknesses of paper, it's well known that these "paper folding" battles can be pretty damn epic.

(There used to be a better version of this at Youtube, but this should still give you the idea, albeit with crappy music.)

And the "correct" term for it is "kamitsukai." ^__^

The anime X/1999 also had some really neat effects using "paper magic" by two opposing characters. Basically using them to summon shikigami (similar to familiars in the onmyodo tradition of magic). This would make an interesting ability for a prestige class in an asian style setting.

I think we've stumbled into a whole new series of transmutation spells..

Costello the Creasemaster's Paper-to-Steel Slice-and-Dice

Fold up a little replica of a dagger and voila! Start the stabbin'!

This is not the first Knowledge (Anime) check I've failed this week.

(After our last exchange, I think I should be scolding you for getting all serious on a post that was clearly intending to be funny.) ;-)

Actually, the fact that we get an "official" response to these sort of questions is one of the great things about the Paizo forums.

Thanks for the answers.

Yeah, but, I used a smiley face.

(And now you did too! So I know you're teasing! Yay!)

Also, I have chocolate now. :D

I mean, who doesn't want their campaign to end when they burst into a tea house, only to realize the whole building is an enormous origami monster. As it refolds itself into a dragon, you can only watch in terror, realizing that what you thought were tapestries are cleverly disguised scrolls imparting magical ability. No matter what strategy you take, the origami behemoth transforms itself to give itself the upper hand. You pray for rain to weaken the paper, or that you had prepared gust of wind, but alas. TPK.

Seriously. I think origami creature would be a great monster template. With modifications for creatures made of… oh I don't know. Silk? Adamantine foil? You could really play with that.

There is a Origami Swarm item in Ultimate Equipment.

Huh. I did not know that. Thank you for posting. I still say it would be cool to meet/create a single larger entity though.

There's a 3PP wizard archetype from Rite Publishing Way of the Samurai (PFRPG) called the Onmyoji who specializes as an origami caster, and would more than likely be found somewhere in Minkai and the lands around it. Of course they aren't official.
