Is RP tools a good program and is the chat VoIP or message board chat?

What other tool are out there you have found to be better?

I use the maptool and tokentool program from rptools.net to run one game and play in 2 others. I find them quite good/useful. The chat in the program itself is text but there's nothing stopping you from running a concurrent program like vent or an IM voice chat window or something if you want to add voice.

Having recently been introduced to RPTools myself I'll chime in with my thumbs-up as well. MapTool and TokenTool worked great for my group, and the chat function in MapTool allows us to do rolls without having an extra window open - we game over Ventrilo and before MapTool were forced to use Vent's chat function, which popped open yet another window on the screen, and as the DM my screen was pretty crowded already.

I heartily suggest it to anyone who has the time to figure out how to use it - not too hard - and players willing to download and install it - also not hard.

Yep, I've been using maptool for over 2 years now an it's great. There's a bit of a learning curve to get a server set up and all the connections working, but if you have any problems there are loads of people on the forums who will help you out. I've found that the rptools forums are some of the friendliest around.

Make sure that you download the latest 1.3 build rather than the release version. 1.3 is almost a release now and it's rock solid and has loads of new features. We use skype for the voice chat and the in game chat for dice rolling and such.
