"Depends on who is doing it most likely. Though maybe its the shape that's important. Of course that might mean its a key thats required, one that just happens to be in the shape of the symbol."

It sounds like everyone is ready to go. Are you heading towards the caves then? The person doing the sailing should make a DC 10 Profession (sailor) check to get you there.

I was under the impression that certain people wanted to wait until they had a more suitable spell selection

DM Wellard wrote:

I imagine a follower of Erastil would pray for spells just before dawn. So, are we waiting until the next day?

Female Halfling Cleric 5

Like I said I was hoping to wait for some more useful spells but if the others want to leave right now we can.

Eria wrote:

I'm fine either way but I need someone to make a decision. If you're leaving, I need a profession (sailor) check for piloting the boat.

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

"Very well then we wait until we are more prepared for aquatic combat" Ewald turns to the villagers "Have you somewhere we can rest up..we have our own food so we won't impose upon you for supplies2

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Rogue 6

I thought we were waiting, but for when we do move... (assuming we can't just take 10)

Sailor: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Hopefully our other budding seaman will do a bit better so we make it out to the islands. :P

The locals suggest you can have the run of the boathouse but also clear out the house next door for you as well.

Amanda listens to the lessons and attempts to aid Galadar.

Untrained Sailor check: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3

Hopefully that gets the bad roll out of the way for our other captain.

"Are you sure that's what they said? I thought the rope went here and you needed to sit further over... Forget it, I'm no help." Shaking her head in frustration, she will move away and let the sailors work.

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

Ewald tries to remember the few times he sailed on the rivers around Oppara..off course he had not been handling the boat....

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

...and it shows.

The practice run is a disaster

Taking 10 is out because there is always the chance of falling in the water. Profession checks are not used untrained. I think I'll be asking for balance checks from everyone to keep you out of the drink on this trip.

The night passes uneventfully, allowing the young cleric to prepare new spells. The villagers are friendly but, for the most part, keep to themselves, recovering from their ordeal.

In the morning, with their help, you get the boat out into the water. The two newly trained sailors make an attempt to get her moving. Unfortunately, they attempt to move her in different directions.

DC 5 Balance checks or you go under in full sight of the villagers who are watching from shore.

So, where are we headed?

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20

I think we are going to the first island, the one with the cave.

2nd Sailing attempt: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

As far as equipment, in the boat, I make sure to bring, from my wagon: 2 hooded lanterns, 10 flasks oil, 10' pole, 2 full waterskins, shovel, 2 50' silk ropes, and the sledge.

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

Acrobatics1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Ewald wobbles a bit and nearly goes in the water..pulling himself together he gets in rhythm with Galadar and the boat begins to make headway.

2nd profession check

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

Female Half-Elf Rogue 3/ Urban Ranger 2

Liandra simply shakes her head at the decidedly less than stellar cast off.

I keep thinking we have a sixth player, but we don't anymore, do we?

Despite a rocky start, the Ewald and Galadar manage to get the boat under control and sail towards The Lion. You knwo that you are looking for some kind of entrance just below sea level. This will require you getting quite close to the island and yet avoiding the rocks.

Another DC 10 sailor check is necessary. A perception check from everybody please.

Female Halfling Cleric 5

Before the boat is to far out on the journey Eria casts a spell on the entire party (Casting water breathing giving everyone the ability to breathe water for 2 hours).

Perception

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

Aid another on the sailor check

1d20 ⇒ 2

Perception 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 = 9

Sailing: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

"We may have to wait out here for low-tide, in order to find the cave, though I suppose we can always swim. If we have to swim, we'll have to divy up the gear. Better to see if we can bring the boat in."

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

Galadar does a good job of bringing the boat close to The Lion. You circle around the island looking for a cave entrance just under the surface of the water, but find none.

Other Perception checks?

Female Half-Elf Rogue 3/ Urban Ranger 2

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

Sharp eyes peeled, Liandra scans the area for any sign of an entrance.

Sailor check1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

Despite Liandra's sharp eyes, you do not see the mouth of the cave the villagers told you was here, just below surface at low tide.

Female Halfling Cleric 5

"Hmm they said lower the holy symbol on silver wire five fanthoms at low tide."

Assuming it is low tide Eria will tie the silver wire to the holy symbol and begin to lower it down.

Eria wrote:

Was that all they said about it?

"No, they said it had to be lowered in the center of the cove. Where's the cove? In the lion's 'mouth'? Or between the islands?"

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Rogue 6

"Is the tide low or high? Anyone familiar with the ocean at all here?"

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

Ewald racks his brains for an answer

Know.Nature 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16

Know.Geography 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21

Ewald knows a little something about oceans. The tide is currently low but the mouth of the cave is still below the surface according to what the villagers said. The water also seems unnaturally dark around parts of the island. The center of the cove would be back towards shore a bit.

Female Halfling Cleric 5

Assuming the group heads for the right part of the cove Eria will as mentioned above tie the silver wire to the holy symbol and lower it down.

Eria wrote:

That's all I needed to hear.

The sound of stone sliding against stone and reverberations under the water tell you something is happening before you can see exactly what is going on.

Soon you can see a barrier rising just a little above the surface of the water all around the cove. This barrier is truly immense and spans from shore, around the island, and to the shore on the other side of the cove.

Then, the water level begins to slowly drop. Any enemy ship in the cove when this happened would be trapped close to shore. Its primary purpose, however, was to allow access to the cave under The Lion.

Female Halfling Cleric 5

"Okay now lets get over there before the water rises again."

Amanda is most interested at this point in seeing what the 'key' touched or did or whatever, so she will try to watch as the water lowers to see what's in the center of the cove to make this marvelous thing work.

And she will follow a suspicion with a little visual augmentation: She casts Detect Magic

"Now that is impressive"

Profession Sailor.1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

So impressed is Ewald that his oar strokes go awry a little

Whatever it is that does this is five fathoms down. Does Amanda feel like taking a swim?

Ewald and Liandra notice::
Something big and dark slides off of one of the islands as the waterline drops below the level it had been lurking at.

Rephrasing: Amanda is most interested at this point in seeing what the 'key' touched or did or whatever. As the water level drops, she watches hoping to espy what makes this work, casting and concentrating on that area. If the water level does not drop that far, she'll leave that particular mystery for further investigation in the future.

Whatever it is remains beyond Amanda's field of vision. The water level has dropped significantly, but she doesn't see a particular device.

No one but Liandra knows what Ewald is referring to.

"Watch out for that what?"

Amanda looks around, giving up on seeing the device in the cove.

Female Half-Elf Rogue 3/ Urban Ranger 2

Liandra draws out her crossbow.

"Something slid into the water from there" she says pointing."We move now or prepare for a fight."

You can race back to the Lion, the island you intended to go to, before this creature gets there with three successful DC 10 Profession (sailor) checks.

You can race away from The Lion to one of the islands further away or race back to the boathouse with two successful DC 10 Profession (sailor) checks.

You must declare which you are doing before you make the checks.

"I can't help with the boat, but maybe I can help discourage whatever that is from approaching."

Readying action to cast Scorching Ray on the creature if Liandra opens fire (and Amanda can see the target, of course)

At this point, Amanda can't see what was indicated. If something is approaching, it is doing so under the water.

The rangers muscles strain as he pulls hard on the oars sending the boat racing through the water towards the cave.
