What are fame points?

Council of Thieves

CoT is the first AP I've purchased, and I've already come across "fame points" which I cannot find any mechanics for. Can someone explain how or what these are used for?

The mechanics for Fame Points don't come into play until the last adventure in Council of Thieves. For now, just keep track of them as the PCs earn them. Fame Points are a new mechanic and element that we're inventing as we go, basically, for this campaign.

(The basic idea is that in the last adventure, the fame points will serve as bonuses for PCs to apply to rolls they make to solve problems when things get crazy in that last adventure, and as a "Currency" they can cash in perhaps to get rerolls or something, sort of like Action Points.)

Thanks, I thought they might have been something that everyone already knew about (from other APs).

Ah; nope!

We generally try to come up with some new kind of crunchy rules element for all our Adventure Paths. For Legacy of Fire it was some stuff with downtime and weapons that grow more powerful as your characters advance. For Second Darkness it was running your own business and some mass combat stuff. For Crimson Throne it was the Character Trait system. For Runelords... well... for that one we were basically just in panic mode—"OMG I HOPE PEOPLE STILL BUY OUR STUFF NOW THAT THE MAGAZINE LICENSES IS OVER, AIEEEEE!"

Is there any chance that these will be put into another publication. Are they open source, can we add them to the PFSRD or Wiki?

(I'm especially interested in the business rules.)

You can check our PI/Open declaration on the credits page. We're pretty generous with designating stuff as Open, so....

And it made for a particularly interesting new crunchy rules bit for the AP, too. ;-P

But you did include a mechanic (of sorts) for tracking "sin" points.

And the haunt mechanic made its first appearance there.

So, it had good stuff, too.

Okay, just one more question, then I'll be quiet about this.

Are there single books from each Adventure Path (like the last one, for example) that has these mechanics explained, or is it spread throughout the books of the Adventure Paths?

Haunts- Rise of the Runelords #2
Sin points- RotR #5 mostly

First traits- Curse of the Crimson Throne Player's Guide
Harrow points- through out CotCT

Business- Second Darkness #1
Mass Combat- SD #3

Downtime- Throughout, notably in Legacy of Fire #1
Advancing Weapon- Throughout, staring in LoF #1, fully advancing in LoF #6

For now, these alternate mechanics are integral parts of their Adventure Paths, and they don't exist outside of them. A fair amount of the better ones (such as haunts) are going to end up in the Gamemastery Guide, though.

Thanks, sounds good.
