Planet Stories Discussion Video

PaizoCon General Discussion

The Exchange

You are about to watch a video of the Planet Stories Discussion that took place at PaizoCon ’09. This event was the most heartfelt of all the events that I attended. I cannot express enough the endearment that the editors of Paizo feel for this line of books. Erik Mona, Publisher, Pierce Watters, Senior Editor, Chris Carey, Fiction Editor and James Sutter, Fiction Editor, all care deeply for the history of fantasy and science fiction. If you ever wondered why Paizo puts story first, Planet Stories is their answer. Paizo understands that the history of science fiction and fantasy can’t be left to today’s publishers. Paizo has taken on, as James Sutter put it, this Sacred Mission to preserve and protect what has largely become forgotten by mainstream publishing. As subscribers to Planet Stories, you can make a difference by reading and sharing your experiences on the classic pieces that Paizo is reproducing. In turn, you will become part of a great effort to turn around the tragic loss of our most treasured classics. My "Sacred Mission" is to attain 150 subscribers for Planet Stories! If we get that, Planet Stories will go on forever!

Enjoy the show!

Planet Stories Discussion Part 1

The Exchange

Hello everyone! I got more video for PaizoCon! Click for more great Planet Stories Discussion Part 2

Liberty's Edge

ok at last i could see both videos

before them you could acount a +1 suscription to planet stories, now that I saw it, i know its a better choice than I though.

The discussion is prettyu interesting, tell us about a lot of authors we didn't know, stories written and how they have influenced modern (and not so modern) stories from the ones writen by Lovecraft to Indiana Johnes.

I agree it was a great point to begin the line with Gary Gigax... it might be more or less a modern writer, but his direct influences definitively came from this authors and they are shown.

But enought of that, they are great videos, check them... now i know why you have taken so much time Zux... great editions... really great

now you only need a tripod... :P

but the important thing is that sound was pretty clear (even for a non native speaker like me), a shame Cris in hs few participations talked so low, somethigns were difficult to understand.

Zuxius, thanks -- great service to the community. So there are 4 more parts coming?

The Exchange

Yes, there are 4 more parts coming. Part 3 will be coming soon (like in a two days).

mmm I suppose the books that Erik carried were to hand to those listening, right?
je his attitude when he arrived was jus that, leaving the books as if he didn't cared about them but at the same time calling the attention to them for a moment before the discussion continued.

a bit theathrical, but fun to watch

I'm booked for Erik's Planet Stories talk at GenCon - can't wait!

I haven't subscribed, but I've ordered every non-Gygax title on the list through my local comic book/book shop. All the books are sitting neatly on my shelf, waiting to be read - this venture deserves support!

I guess one has to keep in mind that Erik was showing up late and leaving early for two of those sessions. Planet Stories was the first event and The Future of Paizo was the second.

I don't know about you, but I don't like showing up late and leaving early to anything. It is very disorientating. I give Erik some space there, that was a hectic first day. The Grand Convocation had a lot of last minute shuffling. I hate to admit it, but I am a worrier. I really feel that kind of pain.

That Grand Convocation had so many facets that I feel it could have gone very wrong, without proper damage control. I think Erik's mind was there when he came in, but that it just a theory. For me, I would be a nervous mess. You know, wondering where the Lemmings are headed to next.

The Exchange

Thank you avidreader514! Try to subscribe as soon as you can. The new format is very slick and they will be releasing books bi-monthly. So no more excuses!

That Event at GenCon will be like Gold! GOOOLD!

You must relay what you learn. Paizo should be announcing some big news that they weren't allowed to say at PaizoCon. Enjoy!

Liberty's Edge

Zux, I think Erik had into many places at the same time, but being there only on Erik, I suppose he had to do things like that... its simply like that

he was part of the forum to talk aboyut Planet Stories, but I think he planed for the others to do well without him...

I believe that was part of the plan, to be in many place in so little time... that would be madness

but I was not there so I can't evaluate... it just appeared theatrical how he arrives with the books, not that it was bad... just looked a bit fun as how I have read its his eprsonality

Why not the Gygax titles? I just finished The Samarkand Solution over the weekend, and am now 1/2 way through Death in Delhi.

All three of his Planet Stories books are really fun reads. At times I start to wonder whether this was what a D&D game with Gary would have been like. There is a vibrancy to the characters and plots that makes them really fun to read (without being too transparent at all with respect to an influence of game mechanics).

The Exchange

Wow, how shall it all end?

Subscribers! More subscribers!

Plans for last video of Planet Stories (Part 6) will include details of just how these old novels of the past are transcribed. There is also a bit as to why Paizo doesn't fix the original printings that contain mistakes.

Yes, you are reading original mistakes intentionally left in by Paizo. Weird eh?

That is Planet Stories! A work to preserve Science Fiction / Fantasy. Help out. Learn about the greats. Subscribe to an exciting line of novels that will expand your mind.

Quite interesting, thanks for the series of videos... your last question was a bit hard, but it was a good one. I really let us see something about the publishing work they had been doing and the one they still need to do... as they say even when science fiction is supposed to be everywhere its also a grey area thatcertainly doesn't has the diffusion, lets sey in its time of Vampire Chrincles the Anne Rice.. and in this days of the series around Harry Potter and Twilight (giak!).

And definitively it would be in the interest of all of us to give diffusion to science fiction... not for Paizo's sake... but for our own sake, because losing this would be as losing soem precious part of our soul we didn't know we had...

For example, until a week ago I did know nothing about Jirel of Joiry, today decades after she was born I fell in love bit the red headed, yellow eyed warrior woman full of rage and pasion, and still very human and femenine... but... from her... I will talk later.

The Exchange

Yea, I came up with that question because I was curious if Pathfinder Fiction would be a smoother book line to release. From what Erik said, I gather there are new things to learn from releasing a Fantasy Fiction line as well. Pathfinder Fiction discussion will reveal their strategy for pitching this line of books. I am fairly convinced they will get these Golarion Novels going from the word "go".
