Endless Quest books

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

I have been in the middle of moving some older gaming stuff around and came across a old "pick your own adventure" book from TSR back in 1982 called "Dungeon of Dread". I know the books were common in the 80's but I was wondering what are the chances Paizo would be willing to try one for pathfinder?

For those of you who do not know what i am speaking of... http://www.gamebooks.org/eq1list.htm

Its basically a novel you read as if you were playing a game. You read until you are given a choice, then you choose one of the choices and the decision tells you which page to continue reading on. This goes on and on until you end the story giving the reader a chance to be the hero of the stoey. It was a cool concept. Some books even aloowed you to keep up with a character sheet and had you roll dice to see if you won a battle.

It might bring in some younger players to the game.

I devoured those Endless Quest books as a kid. And Super Endless Quest...And Lone Wolf....And Fighting Fantasy...And the I.C.E. Middle-Earth books...Even a few Wizards, Warriors & You....I was a big reader anyway, but those books were really a gateway to reading for a lot of my less bookish friends. Here's to hoping something of that style of book can make a comeback...

Oh yeah I remember those books. I enjoyed them immensely. I usually would read through, then go back and choose a different option and different routes and I could read the book a dozen times and it was always different.

I think WRITING that kind of book would HAVE to be tremendously difficult. But yeah, even now I would read them again for the fun of it.

One of the first things I did after getting out of grad school, and finally having some money, was to compile a complete collection of the Endless Quest, Fighting Fantasy, and Lone Wolf books (including the 21st and after Lone Wolf books that weren't printed in the US).

I'm considering selling the rare numbers of Lone Wolf at some point though, trying to save up for a house.

Small world -- Endless Quest books came up in a thread on Kotaku yesterday too (due to news that one of the Fighting Fantasy books is being made into a DS game).

Loved these books as a kid. Still have the first six and another three or four beyond that. My favorite was probably _Return to Brookmere_.

I always enjoyed Pillars of Pentegarn. Haven't read hat many, though I did at one point go through some for info to create an adventure or location.

Myriador converted some of the Fighting Fantasy books into modules: http://fightingfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/D20 The only company I know of to have tried it commercially.

Its weird that you mention this... I was just thinking about these types of books and was thinking about working on one just for kicks.

Not sure what the market is for this kind of book though, not with PS3, Wii and Xbox ...
