Yikes. I remember when I was out of grad school and couldn't get a real job for a year and a half. That sucked.
Folks have already offered ample advice. If it's any additional help...
If you're an illustrator, expand your repertoire to other things, even other boring and practical things like logo design and the like, and do freelance work if you can find it. Offer to teach classes or take on private students. Also, I know my town (is in the US, but I can't imagine this is restricted to America) offers opportunities like festivals and farmers markets where artists are allowed to sell their stuff. There are often craft coops or collectives that help support each other and fund fairs at which to sell ones' work.
Foodwise--my big staple was rice and beans (usually canned beans like kidneys and black beans and garbanzos). They are frack-all cheap, they are HEALTHY (combined, you get protein and fiber and some essential vitamins) and easy to make taste different with a few different spices or other easy, cheap ingredients like fresh onions and garlic and canned tomatoes.
Look for root vegetables--these are cheap and keep a long time as long as you store them properly.
Cut meat in your diet down to a minimum. It's expensive. Rice and beans and similar things will give you a complete protein and make you feel full, plus they keep for a long time.
And drink water. Drink lots of water--because you should anyway, because it's free (apart from any utilities you pay), because it will fill your belly, because it will counteract overdose of sodium from cheap processed foods, because it will sate your thirst more fully and longer than any purchased beverage. If you can't stand the taste of plain water, get a little concentrated juice or lemon or something and put a few drops in, or buy some cheap tea to make.

Actually I have started to do that, but since I'm pretty much starting from scratch, I need to build up portfolio.
I have started to do layout and vector art, but I'm yet to promote it. I'd love to start going to tiny expos and exhibitions but honestly the stuff I doo is "too fantasy" to be apreciated by the geneal audience :P
Also I'd like to do logos too but the necesity of such is sooooo small... Most tiny companies do their own logo (which is like self-medicating!) :(
I'm working on a few more projects that I'm yet to announce that I hope will bring a tad more work.
What keeps me quite occupied and is good -in the long run- is Public Relations... You will see me "goofing" here and on the chatroom a lot! But this is exatly what has got me to where I am, more than my actual artsy skills, for those are still a long way from pro, but the PR has got me lots of work and some considerable promotion. So it keeps me away from the drawing board a lot, but its what brings the commissions up... Complicated :P

The cooking at home is a definite... and a garden if you are careful with how you go about it and plan ahead.
Try shopping at thrift stores... honestly, my casual clothes were 5 to 10 times more expensive (literally) than my dressier stuff... and I'm talking jeans and a t-shirt compared to Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Doc Marten brown oxfords (virtually brand new, the lady at the shop said a $1 a pair for shoes and I made her take all my loose change in addition to the $1... they had been worn maybe once or twice at best and were $89 shoes new). I'm not joking, I can buy name brand dress clothes... usually with tags still attached, right off the rack for $1 or $2 per item... granted, selection is hit or miss and I hot wash everything before wearing (or sanitize in the case of shoes)... but you get the point. We've got a lot of wasteful rich people in town I guess.
Pasta is cheap... and better for you than hot dogs.
On the note of hot dogs, what happened to the day when you could buy two hot dogs for $1 when out in town? The ones at the grocery store are now nearly $3 for two... I will not pay that for hot dogs. If I'm out and hungry I'll usually snag a cheap loaf of italian bread and eat on that while I'm driving.
...last note, ironically, I hated Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and all of that stuff previously... until I needed some nicer clothes for work and thought "what the heck, it's brand new with tags still and the thrift store wants $1 for it"...now I've become a bit of a clothes snob. It's hard to buy a $10 Faded Glory shirt at Walmart when I know if I hold off and keep checking the thrift store each week then something comparable but better will probably hit the racks by the end of the month.
(final word on that... I've found independent thrift stores (usually a front end fundraiser for a non-profit charity), church yard sales, and general yard sales to be much cheaper than the Goodwill stores... sometimes Goodwill is decent on their prices, other times I can actually buy the item new if I look around in a department or "dollar" store)
PS- Always, always hot wash anything you buy... consider dry cleaning expenses before buying an item that requires such care.

The suscription is my current "my personal luxury thing" and I'm keeping it mostly under the excuse that its for "work" purposes...You know, to stay on the loop. The thing is that when I get depressed I shop and eat to "boost me up" but then I find me on a deeper problem than before :P You know how self-destructive behavior is, al about rings, what goes around... I've been buying minis like crazy ever since when I started trying to illustrate for a living and I can tell you is not a smart thing at all...but so far the compulsive behavior beats the reasoning.

sometimes I divided the expenses of the sucription between a friend that just wanted the pdf :P
then he stoped liking Pathfinder.. it took a hit on my economy, that is when i canceled the subscriptions finaly
I know the books are great, but maybe just keeping the APs and the Pathfinder would be a good idea, the rest you could get on PDF (of course I shamless in the fact that i print some of them on the office... but nothing from Legacy of Fire... to much orange in the background :S)

One of my favorites: Mac & Cheese with Tuna and Peas (all mixed together). About $3 for a big old batch loaded with carbs and protein... great bachelor food. Throw on a bit of seasoned salt for a little extra zing. I lived on this for years and still make up a batch now and then (not sure if the long-term effect was entirely beneficial). Kids love it.
Also, sell the TV - who needs it with the internet all this reading to do?
