In case you missed it: Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook PDF will be just $9.99. #pathfinder #pfrpg (SKR)
I am floored. Seriously, guys, well done - that's one hell of a lost leader.
While I knew I was going to buy the book, I was wondering whether my players were going to be willing to buy-in right away ... now that is no longer in question.
My group will be playing this game; please enjoy our money.

This was Lisa Stevens's comment about the price after Joella was worried about this hurting the local game stores.
Joella:
It took me a while to understand the necessity of pricing the PDF at the lower price. And I firmly believe that this won't harm a brick and mortar retailer one iota. Why? Because gamers fall into two camps: those like you and I who love to have dead-tree versions of our games and those who are strictly in the digital realm. Sure, there are folks who like the ability to have both versions (and our subscription practices are aimed at them), but they are mainly dead-tree lovers. Folks who will only buy a PDF were never a customer of the dead-tree version. Many of those folks would have downloaded a free digital version from one of the many pirate websites. Some of them probably still will. But by keeping the PDF price low, it encourages people to check out the PDF legally and because the price is low enough, they are more likely to go the legal route than pirating the digital copy. Also, it is a great way for a customer to preview the game and see if they like it. If they do, I bet that they will end up buying a print copy somewhere, whether it is at a FLGS or online. Without the inexpensive PDF, we probably never would have had the chance to sell a print copy to that person.
Another thing to think about is that the game is open content. Within a very short amount of time of release, I expect the Pathfinder RPG rules to be available for free on various wiki pages. So you can basically play the PFRPG and never pay a penny. With the inexpensive PDF, you might just decide to get the much prettier version instead of just using the wiki. That makes the Pathfinder Core Rulebook a weird duck in regards to the PDFs and pricing and such. There is definitely a big value to the print version of the core rulebook. Unless you own your own printing facility or can run off high-def copies at work, it is cheaper to buy the print book than to buy the PDF and print it off yourself. Trust me, we needed some early copies of the book ourselves and the B&W printings were more expensive than the core rulebook MSRP.
I have to admit that this whole low-pricing scheme for the core rulebook is a bit of an experiment. My feeling is that it will feed the base of people who play the PFRPG and drive many of them to buy the print version somewhere. Also, I think we will see less pirated copies when the PDF is reasonably priced. Only time will tell whether this was a good move or not, but my gut tells me that it is.
Whew, that was a lot of typing. :) Thoughts?

Works for me,
I'm more than happy to hand over the cash for the since I like books and will most likely pour over it.
Most of my players - not so much.
However if they enjoy the rules they would most likely pony up the $10 and print out the section for their current class, spells, etc as they need.
It would be unlikely that they would have brought the book though.
Good to see a publisher "getting it" and working with their customers and not against them.
Cheers

Guys ive been following your product all along and Pathfinder blew me and my table away.... Were all so happy with it and the fact that you plan to sell it for 9.99 just 8) us!!
Ive been wondering, would you send 2 or 3 copys to Argentina?? I would love to have it in hard cover and shinny (: So that's my question, wich methods do i have to get it all the way here ?=
Please keep up this magnificent work!! Thanks for saving me of the boredom that 3.5 became.
You know what? Ill be sincere with you guys...here's the deal as pretty much everyone in the internet ive downloaded piracy...here in argentina the situation (moneywise) it's actually really really bad, so for us buying a core rulebook (say, eberron, dragonlance CS) costs 50 dolars, for us that's 190 pesos aprox. 150 pesos means 10% of what the average worker gains A MONTH. So there you have it, we are willing to buy 3 or 4 of your core rulebook, you keep the prize reasonable and i would really like to help you guys with this, the same way you helped me giving me back my love for 3.5.
Thanks and just for the record, i've never downloaded illegal about you guys, you post your betas in the page!! if you don't give people reasons to steal your things, they won't do it.
Thanks again!!

Odds are fairly good I'll get my FLGS to bring in a print copy for me, and I'll order the PDF online now. If the price had been a lot higher (say, more than $20), I'd have been annoyed, and skipped something. Paizo gets more out of me this way.
I'm skipping the subscription for now because there's no concrete information as to what it'll consist of beyond PFRPG and Beastiary. I'm not going to be lame and keep suspending and enabling the subscription as different books I want are announced. For instance, I simply won't spend $1 on an Epic book. But Psionics I would. Personal choice.
At this price point, Paizo is giving me the flexibility to get the product I want.

WHAHOOOOOOOOOO! PAIZO RULES! THANK YOU LISA!
I just got done forwarding your statement to 17 gamers who I play with in various groups. Most say they want the dead-tree version, but in reality the $9.99 price will make this very affordable for more than half of them! Way to go, Lisa Stevens!!!!
Absolutely wonderful!
mearrin69 |
I signed up for the subscription so I'll be getting both anyway but I think this is really great idea on Paizo's part. Most gamers, even poor ones, want to support the designers (I think) and this will help - and, I bet, lead at least to sales down the road of supporting products. It won't stop piracy, but it should reduce it to about as low a level as can ever be expected.
BTW, I am a die-hard dead-tree book lover BUT I am coming to find PDFs (at least original ones where the text is accessible) indispensible in preparing for my games. When I can just cut and paste a stat block into my reference tool of choice (NBOS' The Keep right now, used to be MS' One Note) it saves me much time and book toting during the game - and I still have the full book electronically for deep reference anyway. Very handy. I spent last night copying important bits about Sandpoint into a briefing about the town for me to reference when I run RotRL Sunday. In a few years I'll wonder how I ever managed before "digital copy" came around.

Edit: Now...if only the images were easily selectable. I had to screengrab them and erase out the backgrounds by hand to be able to drop them into my "show to players" directory. I swear I remember selecting a photo "under" the text in one of these products but none of the ones I checked last night had that feature.

No -- having all the rules available as Open Game Content and available for free: that's one hell of a loss leader!
Paying $10 for art and proper names is just gravy. :-)

You could do it in Adobe 8, uninstall 9 an reinstal 8

This seems to be a product of the newest versions of Adobe Acrobat and Foxit reader. You can still select them in version 8 of Acrobat, but that requires a lot of fiddling.
Alternatively, you can use Some PDF extractor, but that has a tendency for massive overkill and pulls out all the images in the pdf. I use it and then delete the vast majority.

Yes - I read this three times and thought about it (the entire post.) Very smart business sense. I myself will buy two hard copy edtions at GenCon and a PDF so I can print out sections if I don't feel like carrying a copy of the book to a game. I actually think it is possible you'll make a bit more money from some who couldn't afford the hardcover but wish to play the game or just want to try it out first before spending any money.
A taste sometimes is all you need. I bought Doom (and every PC game that Id software made for awhile) becuase I got to play 1/3 of the game for free first.
I am a D&D player who hasn't played for a while and I downloaded some free stuff and the beta and got hooked. I played my first Society game two nights ago and when I get my next paycheck I am easily spending 180 dollars on your products.

Well, you can't find much higher commendation than that!
Welcome back to the community Ed :-)

The best part about having a PDF from Paizo is my ability to download it wherever I end up. I also have the piece of mind in knowing that if my Hard Drive fails, I haven't lost my Paizo stuff. It is safe and secure on their web site. They are like a digital memory bank. For that reason, I am a fan of their PDFs. My products are secure with them.

Welcome back, good sir. You have chosen most wisely! I wish you much fun, great gaming, and superior PAIZONIAN fellowship!
Thanks to you (and Darkwhite) for the welcome! I've found the Pathfinder community to be very friendly and helpful in getting me up to speed. (One guy at the Society game I played really went out of his way in helping me make a good character and getting settled in - and he wasn't even playing at my table that night!)
The thing that got me fully hooked on Pathfinder was when I downloaded the FREE players guide to the Curse of the Crimson Throne (for a game that hasn't be able to take off the ground sadily). The level of quality in that made me feel this would be a world I could really dive into. I was half way there but that guide clinched it for me.
I hope down the road to find a steady campaign (in NY) to play about three or four of the adventure paths that have really got my attention. I am also currently playing a very fun Shackled city game by post right here on the boards. I'll also be playing a Society game at GenCon.

Also, inserting my own notes & commentary RIGHT IN THE RULES or in specific encounters in the APs... that's great.
I travel, and when I'm not on travel, I have long commutes. Having a PDF is essential now. Hardcover manuals just don't cut it anymore, and I'm an old fart with a pile of gaming books. It's rare that I actually want to get the paper version these days if I can get a true electronic format PDF (rather than a scan).
Make a better PDF and Paizo will win more than a few players away from 4e.

Well this is just fan-frakin'-tastic, this is. My family is a little weird: I'm a digital nut, my wife (who games just as much as I do), is the dead-tree-lover. So, we're totally getting both.
Now, what I would pay $20 for is a searchable/archivable version of the PFRPG rules à la what Sovelior Sage did for the 3.5 System Reference Document. Consistently updated, downloadable, fully searchable and when used with tabs on your web browser, one of the best GM (and player) resources, bar none. And this guy did all of the work for FREE!
I've found the PFOGC, which is similar, but not quite as developed - probably b/c it would be a waste of time just for the beta rules. But if Paizo were to adopt this site, or a similar project that merged conventional tabletop and digital play, I would pay good money for that service.

I'm a big follower of D20 SRD myself. Paid a one-time fee (about $12) and you can download the entire site files locally.

This will help a lot. I of course want to buy a copy right off the shelf from my local retailer as I did with the Beta version, not only to support them but to encourage the idea that Paizo's materials are worth stocking. But I figured the PDF would end up being nearly the price of the heftable version, but since I've been working on a spreadsheet to assist with character creation, I really need to be able to search and to copy-and-paste text.
The ten-dollar price fixes my dilemma. I can justify buying them both. Thank you very much.

I'm actually not too far from you and I'm looking to put together a group to run through the AP's at some point. I was going to wait until the core rules is actually out in August.
I already know there are somethings that I'm going to house rule using Bad Axe Games Trailblazer, but for the most part I'm just waiting for the Core Book. Let me know if youre interested. If we can scrape up a few more players and a regular scheduled meet time we can get this thing rolling.

We can ship to Argentina; unfortunately, the least expensive method to ship something over 4 pounds (such as the Core Rulebook) is International Priority, which isn't cheap. However, it's fairly inexpensive—and sometimes even no additional shipping cost—to add additional copies.
The best way to see the exact cost is to drop stuff in your cart and start the checkout process; you'll see a shipping quote before you commit to buying.

I'm skipping the subscription for now because there's no concrete information as to what it'll consist of beyond PFRPG and Beastiary.
We have announced the two products after the Bestiary: the GM screen (September) and the GameMastery Guide (February). See the product list here.

Hi,
Very much interested...please shoot me an email to discuss: swordandpaper@gmail.com. I would perfer a Friday night or weekday, but I can be flexible.
I am not necessarily in a rush to start. I’m going to GenCon and most of August will be a mess for me (tons to do at work)...but starting a steady bi-weekly game in Sept or October would be excellent.
Thanks!

Wow, that's just wonderful news to have the pdf available so cheap! I'm going to be moving countries for a working holiday in the next month or so and had resigned myself to waiting until I was settled before getting my hands on Pathfinder. But at this price I can happily pick up the pdf and have that to browse through before getting my print copy.
