PDQ is free. I also recommend PDQ Sharp which is also free. They do not cover how to do magic, although the system is so open ended, it would not be difficult to make up your own magic rules.
Questers of the Middle Realms does have magic and psionics, but is very lighthearted. It can be done with less tongue in cheek, but some may have difficulty getting past the humor. Jaws of the Six Serpents also has magic but without the humor.
All of these systems are nearly identical. If you want to try out the free stuff first and need some help with a magic system, just let me know. I would be happy to help a fellow GM.

It's a very entertaining read.
Thank you. I can not take all of the credit. Rook really helped keep it interesting.
Sadly, Rook was chased off that board by a troll.
CourtFool is a pretty nice guy, when he isn't being a simpering puppy that needs to be beaten and abused!
Tease!

My beginning GMing was much the same.
I have found over the years that no matter how much you prep and how well you think you know your players, they will go off the reservation.
Learn to improvise. Another thing to keep in mind, players have no idea what is going on in your devious little mind. If one of them gives you a great idea, "I sure hope these are not the king's men testing our loyalty" use it. The player will think they guessed some wild scheme of yours and you get a freebie.
My very first GMed adventure went off without a hitch.... unless you count me forgetting the monsters turn in EVERY battle a hitch!
(in my defense i was 12 and had 11 players)

Warning: You can't join just one. While you're waiting for someone to post you get impatient and decide that you can get more play in if you join two.
or 12...
Looking through all of my Aliaseseses you will see that they are all PbP Characters. If I tried to post as a Jack/Poodle/Frog/Piece of 5 day old cheese I think my life would be sleep-Paizo-sleep-Paizo-sleep-Paizo- with maybe some time for family squeezed in there at some stage. Work? What the hell is that?Stebehil |
...you just spend an hour reading this whole thread up to this point and having a good time, instead of doing some work for your studies...
And thinking that it is quite sad that you will most probably never meet most of the folks here in person.
And considering joining a PbP just from reading this thread, despite the fact that free time is at an all-time low presently. (not to mention living in a different time zone...)

They are awesome. I just can't get enough.
Timezones make no difference. I am in Australia and look at how many I am in.flash_cxxi RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32 |

You look at Moorluck and Solnes' Avatars and think "A Drow and a Cute Little Blonde... now there's a recipe for fireworks!"
BTW, nice new Avvy Solnes! ;)
Thanks..It was the closest I could find to what my new hair style looks like...hair is just a bit more on the red side! It came out awesome!
LOL, Moorlucks' Avvy is HAWT!!!

Arrgh... you make it even harder to resist them....
Well, at the moment it would be utter nonsense to participate, as I will be away days and weeks at a time in the next three months - perhaps in fall, especially if Patrick Curtins oWoD PbP gets started then.

Huh. Something about that schedule sounds familiar....;)

I would fear to put my child any place someone as demented as CourtFool drempt up.

She says she's up to the challenge, but wants to know when she gets to ride the unicorn!

You have to ask Sebastian about that.

That´s to be expected: one teacher cannot possibly know as much as hundreds of people frequenting a messageboard.

Fair enough.
It still makes me a Paizo nerd though.

Okay, let's revise: the messageboard's population collectively knows more and has better answers than the entire faculty put together, from day one to graduation from high school, and possibly on through college.
