Thanks for checking it out, Matt! You'll want to read Outlaws next. Please let us know what you think of it.

I will, trying to get caught up before the backed up books arrive.

I have to read in small doses though (one book a day max) because I notice my speech and writing patterns take on the mannerisms of the books I read.

Zounds! Where be the problem with that?

Kline operated as Howard's literary agent for many years, and placed a number of his stories in the pulps even after his death. There is a fanzine called OAK LEAVES that includes correspondence between Kline and Howard's family following REH's suicide.

Why Weird Tales is an incredibly prescient article, and for my money I think it may be the most important piece of writing Otis Adelbert Kline ever published. I think you will quite enjoy it, and the replica of the Weird Tales issue in question is a real beauty for many reasons, not the least of which being its enormous "bedsheet" size or its collaboration between H. P. Lovecraft and Harry Houdini, "Imprisoned with the Pharaohs".

That latter story was the inspiration for the title of the Pathfinder Module "Entombed with the Pharaohs," by the way, and is a highly enjoyable read.

Erik

thanks for the heads up the why weird tales artical will be the first thing i read

that lovecraft houdini collaberation is another story im looking forwerd to

the issue also has 3 other stories that sold the issue for me

the malignant entity by OAK

the werewolf of st bonnot by Seabury Quinn

and the loved dead by CM Eddy the story that saved weird tales from bankruptcy in 1924

well i just recived the may june july issue of weird tales replica

and i just finished the why weird tales artical by the great otis adelbert kline its great and very interesting

and i agree with him a weird tale is a good thing every now and then

I thought his bit about "perhaps one day the writers in these pages will be recognized" was prescient, especially given the creeping literary canonization of Lovecraft, with Robert E. Howard and even Clark Ashton Smith and C. L. Moore coming into view on the horizon.

the issue also has a short story by kline called the malignant entity a weird mystary story about a flesheating creature it was also published in amazing stories in 1928

klines stories just seem to grab me his first weird tales story was a two part seriel called the thing of a thousand shapes appered in the first issue i remember when i receved the second issue replica in the mail i hurridly ripped open the package like a kid on christmas day so i could finish the story

oh and also i read the lovecraft houdini collabration imprisoned with the pharaohs it was great also my dad was watching nova the other night about the sphinx and i showed him the cover painting on the weird tales issue he though it was a nice painting of the sphinx

Is Kline's essay available anywhere else than in the original and the reprint? I'd love to read that.

klines why weird tales essay is available in the coffie table book called the weird tales story

Thanks, Jjb1011jjb.
