Crippling attack

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Hi,
I'm very sorry to post a subject about a rogue talent in this section but I can't post anywhere else (and I have no idea why), and as the rogue in my campaign reach the lvl 10 (going to the shoanti) I have a question on the "crippling attack".
In fact, the bleeding attack can be used only one time on an foe (because it doesn't stack with it) but what about the crippling attack. Can a rogue make a crippling attack more than one time on a same foe, making him loose 2 stretch damage every time he sneaks this same foe or is it only usable one time like the bleeding attack?

I could see that going either way, but I would go with it not being stackable to avoid abuse. The final wording may clarify this better.

And as to posting in other places, if you're trying to post in the playtest forums where a lot of these questions originally went, those are locked since the playtest is over.

If crippling strike hasn't changed from 3.5 and beta, and still deals strength damage, it stacks of course. Damage always stacks - It's damage!

Any limiting of crippling strike (or the number of sneak attacks you can do in a round/fight) is a houserule. And boring.

In factpage 40 it is written:

"An opponent damaged by ONE of her sneak attacks also takes 2 points of Strength damage."
So according to me, you can use it ONLY one time by opponent!
What do you think?
But the first sneak attack can deal:
1d6 (rapier) + damages' bonus + sneak attack + bleeding attack + crippling strike

I interpret it this way: If you're damaged by one sneak attack, you take the 2 points of strength damage.
If you're damaged by two sneak attacks, you take 4 points.
And so on.

If they wanted it to work only once, they'd make it a penalty, which doesn't stack with other penalties. Or they would spell it out that this cannot be used more than once.

Don't go too much into semantics - that way madness lies. After all, the book doesn't say what happens to someone damaged by TWO sneak attacks. Does he get the strength damage, too? If not, does he get it back if he's hit again? Does he turn into the hulk?

I think if that "one" wasn meant to imply that it isn't cummulative, it would say. "damaged by one or more sneak attacks." Or, as I said, it wouldn't be damage.

Plus, your interpretation would mean that 4 rogues could deal 8 points of strength damage, while one cannot deal more than 2 points. That would be too 4e for my taste.

I agree!

One more question, in PF beta, there is nothing said about the fact that the rogue would only be able to sneak living creature, so does it mean that he can sneak undead?

I have a hardcopy of the Beta, and there is a sidebar that says that sneak attack will be more useful and able to target MOST (emphasis added by me) undead and other creatures. Only creatures without an anatomy (oozes, some elementals and plants and undead), would be immune, and I think a quality of that specific creature, not a creature type.

For example, I would think it should be possible to sneak attack a vampire by stabbing its heart or taking off its head. In 3.5, you can't. In PFRPG, maybe....hopefully....we'll have to see!

Don't read too much into it, it just means he has a printer. :P
