Open Gaming at PAIZOCON 2009

Howdy folks!

So I've been smashing the schedule together all week and it looks like we'll have one or two 4-table rooms available for open gaming the entire show. They'll run from 12 P.M. to 11 P.M. on Friday, 8 A.M. to 11 P.M. on Saturday, and 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. on Sunday with minor interruptions here and there for smaller events.

I'm posting these times for two reasons:

1. Who plans to run open gaming stuff? IE, who is planning on showing up with RPGs, board games, card games, etc. and just camping out in the open gaming areas for all or part of the time?

2. Does anyone want 24-hour gaming? Speak now or forever hold your peace!

Thanks!

Liberty's Edge Contributor, RPG Superstar 2012

I'm bringing Kill Doctor Lucky and Cutthroat Caverns.

If I could stay up late, I'd love 24-hour gaming.

Thanks for getting the rooms!

Hmmm... I may drop in to investigate the festivities from time to time but gaming for 24 hours... Questionable. Dependent on how things work out.

I will be running a Pathfinder RPG Beta game called Trouble in the Mines for anyone who is interested. Not sure when I will need to see the schedule first.

"You just arrived in the town of Thelor as caravan guards from Katapesh and have a couple of days to kill before the caravan returns. While relaxing at the Drunken Rock Tavern you hear rumors about an infestation at the local gem mine. Rumors fly far and wide as to what is plaguing the mine, everything from from fierce gnolls to rampaging stag beetles. Interested parties should speak with Derius at the Jalman Mining Venture."

Minimum/Maximum # of players 4 to 6
Gaming System/edition : Pathfinder RPG
Maturity rating: PG
Player experience req. Some
For what Character levels: 5th level, I will have pregenerated characters or you can bring your own, speak to me for details.

I will likely be bringing Star Wars Saga stuff (minis and books) and would like to run something. Do we need to sign up for a time or is it "open" as the name suggest? Should folks that want to run something advertise and sign up players before the show? Sorry, new to the con scene. :)
M

Open is open. You just show up, grab players, and play! :-)

I am sure I'd make use of this for a game or two...

Scarab Sages

*ponders bringing Arkham Horror or Descent*

Those probably have too many bits to lose, sadly.

Scarab Sages

I'm sure I'll probably park my ass out there for a while, too... I doubt I'll be doing any 24 hour gaming, though. I do require some sleep, just not much.

The Exchange

Hell, can we drink beer in them? I would love to support a Star Wars RPG as well as anything Axis & Allies or Fantasy board game.

I use little plastic bags to keep all my Arkham Horror pieces in, with all the clue tokens bagged up in one, the skills sliders in another, the cash in a third, the sanity and stamina tokens in a couple more, and the others distributed amongst those bags.

The little plastic bags I use are the ones which you can push together at the mouth to seal them.
Admittedly if I take it anywhere, I am very careful to count all the pieces back in afterwards....

I hope you can bring Arkham Horror. I've been interested, but not quite enough to purchase my own copy. I promise I'll be gentle with the pieces. :)

Scarab Sages

If enough people are interested in the Horror, I can bring it. I have the main game and all 5 current expansions. Not sure how many of those I should bring though.

I'll be volunteering for all 5 spots in the Society games, so not sure when we can do it, but I'll definitely bring it by if enough are interested. It can support up to 8 people. :)

Any interest in Descent?

Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

I would suggest that one of these rooms could work to set up a TV and DVD player so that we could watch The Gamers and Dorkness Rising on Friday.

I'd most certainly like to give Descent a go. FFG does make pretty games. I bought Tide of Iron and Tannhauser a while back. Both are pretty impressive looking. Haven't played ToI yet but Tannhauser was fun.

My personal favourites in terms of expansions are Curse of the Dark Pharaoh and Kingsport. The Curse of the Dark Pharaoah is the expansion with the most flavour to it, I feel, and Kingsport offers challenges to even the most experienced players.

Those are the expansions I might take along to PaizoCon UK this year - or maybe King in Yellow for a faster, more brutal game. (Especially with the Herald.)

I have Descent, Talisman, Cataan games, and others that I will bring but I would love to get a Diplomacy game going.

Are there any takers for Diplomacy???

The Exchange

I have War of the Ring, Starcraft and Star Wars: Queen's Gambit. Believe it or not. I also have ...well crap, I should just take a picture.

The Exchange

I would try diplomacy. Never played it, but I own it.

Get with me on this. I have everything that Saga has ever made. I also have every mini they ever made.

Just about.

We are short about 20 minis from having the collection complete. Everything from Legacy back, we got. I have 4 sets of Galaxy Tiles too. Just about every map they made except one tourney map.

Diplomacy is also on the list of "never tried, but interested". So, count me in too. (unless someone brings Arkham Horror, then I'll have a tough choice)

oooo ... Arkham Horror ... Love that game!

As to 24 hour gaming, put me down for a definite maybe ... I'll be running on east coast time, so 1100pm would be like 200am ... but that also means that 800am would be like 1100am ... oh the confusion!!!

So, I am hoping to put together a Diplomacy game. If those who have mentioned wanting to play are truly interested we probably have about 4 or 5. The game is way better if we have 7.

I have not played since GENCON two years ago and would really enjoy a game. It will probably take at least three hours and may go as long as 5.

I am proposing we play on Saturday sometime. So, please put your interest here and let's get a game going. I would also enjoy some Arkham Horror or some Talisman but for me Diplomacy first.

Thanks all...

The Exchange

I would be there Shem. I don't mind screaming and yelling. No change from living at home. At least the faces will be different.

LOL - Nice...

The Exchange

I hear that Diplomacy reveals so-called "nice people" for the scumbags they really are. In turn, your character is tested.

Perhaps a game of Dimplomacy will be one of the things God judges you by at Judgement Day.

I'll go ahead and commit. I am GMing Saturday morning and Friday afternoon, so I won't be available for those times.

At this point I know of 4 and we are probably going to have to play Saturday afternoon or evening. Just two more to make the game happen.

Diplomacy to this day is still the only game I've played where I lost a friend doing so. I love that game. :-)

LOL - Thanks Josh. I appreciate your dedication.

Losing a friend over a game is the best way to find out.......<fill in the blank>

Are folks interested in playing through some of the earlier PFS modules?

My PFS character is going to be 3rd level at best by the time the convention rolls around...so I will only be able to play two of the four modules being offered.

CJ

I don't even *have* a PFS character :) But I'd be willing to make one to join a game. Guess we'll see what's running when the schedule goes up.

I bought and downloaded PFS scenario #14 to get an idea of how the modules are laid out. Don't want to overextend myself (volunteered to run three slots) at the show but would consider running it, as it looks pretty fun. It says it is for tiers 1-2, 3-4, and 6-7.
M

I'd LOVE to play in some lower level games, I have a # for the society, but no PC yet so I want to level him someway! Is anybody arriving thursday, anyone gonna run a game on thursday as well? And how many scenerios do we play before we level?

Heya. I have yet to actually DM a PFS game but I have read the manual! :) Your character receives one XP for each scenario you successfully complete...and it takes three XP to advance a one level.

I'm coming in Thursday but don't think I'm going to try to run a game that evening.

Sovereign Court

I'd be interested in some more low-level PFS games too, since I've only played at GenCon UK last year and my character is only 2nd level. What's most important is finding a GM to run one/some for us. :)

Paizo Employee Director of Narrative

I've only got one PFS game under my belt, so I'd like to get in on this if possible. See ya there.

I also have not played any PFS games and would like to work on my character (which I need to create before June). I thought Sean Manhoney was going to run some local games in Olympia but I have not heard from him since this all started.

I fear the organizers may have over estimated the number of folks who can actually play higher level modules.

I am prepared to run:
#1 Silent Tide
#2 Hydra's Fang
#4 Frozen Finger of Midnight
#5 Mists of Mwangi
#6 Black Waters
#7 Among the Living

And probably a couple other by the time the convention rolls around. I only only committed to run scheduled events in the first slot and assist with the Interactive -- so I will be available the rest of the time to run an "informal" low-level track of modules.

I'm also going to have a room at the hotel for off-hours gaming/beer drinking.

Since I haven't played any Pathfinder Society yet, I'd be interested in low level adventures. I'm not sure I'd even want to join one of those adventures rated for levels 1 through 5 and have my character be the weak link sitting at level 1 while the rest are 3rd+.

thelesuit wrote:

Considering that I'm only running 1-2 tables of the high level scenarios per slot and 12 tables of the low level scenarios per slot, I think I hit a nice balance between high and low. :-)

Might be fun. Haven't played in 10+ years.

I'll totally run some open gaming. And a big vote for 24 hour open gaming, Josh!

With the caveat of showers and clean clothes changes sometime in between. =) Just saying.

I'll likely bring some games with me depending on how my schedule works out. I'd like to get at least two PFS scenarios and one of Lilith's games in. But other than that, I'll likely be wandering looking for games or playing my own. I have a great space card game that has been my favorite for awhile and the Girl Genius card game is fun, maybe bring Parthenon and or Puerto Rico(if I can borrow it from our roommate). We'll mostly be tranveling light except for our needed books.

Are you running a PFS version of Slave Pits? I'm trying to get a chance to play it in the high tier, but everyone in my local area has already played it! Very frustrating, since it sounds like one of the better ones, and at 4 and two-thirds, I don't have many more slots for the tier 1-5 scenarios.

Not sure, logic_poet. I just volunteered, and I expect I'll go wherever Josh needs me most. I'd love to run a PFS version of Slave Pits. Worst case, round up a few folks, and I'll try to run it for you in open gaming.

Yes, I find it tough to get enough people to play without losing a D&D session and not everyone has played or is interested.

Definitely planning on spending time in the open game rooms with some of my light-weight games: Fluxx (Zombies, Monte Python), Falling (Goblin edition, of course), Three Dragon Ante. I'm contemplating bringing a half dozen lazy peon Warcraft decks. I may also bring one or two larger boardgames (I'd love to actually complete a game of Order of the Stick).

24 hour gaming sounds good to me.

At least three rooms of 4 tables each with 10 chairs per table will be open 24 hours a day from noon Friday through 5 P.M. Sunday. I better see people in there at 5:30 A.M. ;-)

So, Jason what are you running or bringing at 5:30 AM. I might be game. Perhaps a little Doctor Killing????
