this is what you're looking for mark, I'm guessing you missed a lot of the design discussions, don't worry, have you also seen the revised Barbarian?

Sheesh - apparently I DID miss a lot! Thanks for the link. I think I probably missed the revised Barbarian as well.
There has not been a revised Ranger yet, has there???

well when they did the d21 thing they listed 20 things that make PFRPG diff then 3.5 one of them was Paladins smite lasts till the foe is dead
Could mean that it's changed so you can keep smiting that foe until he's dead, or could just be flowery speech describing the changed duration we already know of.

Although that bit may have been a joke, as a concept I really like the sound of this.
It wouldn't tread on the martial abilities of the fighter by requiring feats and feat chains, or the ranger by borrowing any of the favoured enemy type/style of mechanics.
It makes Smite Evil a bit like a divine challenge or oath against evil npc characters, which again fits really nicely.

You know... I think I agree with you! I'm no mechanics expert on how it would all play out "rules and dice" wise but when I read that, it struck a chord with me as a neat idea.
