Rat’s End and the Hellfish

Savage Tide Adventure Path

I think I’m missing something. I’m working out Tides of Dread and there’s all these missions for the party to go on to accumulate Victory Points. One thing conspicuously absent is a description of Rat’s End and the Hellfish. These are the first to things that my players asked about and I kept it very vague because I didn’t have anything prepared. It does seem obvious that they are going to claim the Hellfish as their own and use it in the battle against the fleet, so some details would have made sense. Any equipment, supplies or treasure aboard? I mean, if they were clearing out of Rat’s End, presumably they took everything of value with them. The text says the Hellfish was the only “sea worthy” ship at Rat’s End. What else is there? Are the “un-seaworthy” ships that are left repairable?

I could totally make these details up on my own, but I first want to be sure I haven’t missed something. It just seems like a huge oversight.

I do not think there are stats for the Hellfish, but I guess the people of Farshore claim this ship in order to use it for the defense of Farshore. Rat's end is deserted when the pirates leave it, so I assumed they have all their gear with them. Since this is just rabble, I guess they do not have much equipment besides what they have on them. I guess the Hellfish is a Caravel. If the group wants to sell it, where would they do that? In Farshore surely nobody is able to pay for the ship. And I guess people will not be pleased when the group wants to sell a ship which they can use to defend Farshore against the Crimson Fleet.

If you really want to add treasure to the Hellfish, then add a group of not so very nice people from Farshore who plundered the ship during the raid, making use of the confusion. Of course the colony leaders want them found, which means one extra mission for your group to earn victory points :-)

Great ideas, all, Luna. Thanks.

I've had enough of this, I'm off to play some Chris Vrock comedy. :)

Sorry to drift back on topic - in ours it wasn't much of an issue; we had already set the idea of crew minimums etc using Stormwrack, and whilst a few of the PC's knew how to sail, few of the Colonists did, and Lord Mayor Manthalay Meravanchi (LMMM) declared that no-one was running away from the fight (and the Nixie had already left). In the end, there simply aren't enough people on the isle with the skills to sail a ship that big anywhere.

Of course, this didn't stop LMMM from sending the Hellfish "out on patrol" just prior to the Fleet's arrival i.e. stationed on the far side of the island, just in case things didn't go well...

It's a long way to the top (of the plateau) if you wanna Vrock & Roll..
