Sorry I forgot to put it on my character sheet, due to the Deep Pockets class sheet. I had my mundane weapons listed with mundane gear, but then decided with that feat not to list them. Should have put up my additional weapons: MW Longbow, 40 Arrows, 10-javelins, 2-daggers, and a club (Walking stick). If you want to rule I don't get them until Drellins Ferry that's cool, since I'm the one who forgot

Red Feather begins to recite a war ballad of the Hawk Clan. He also moves to any convenient cover, preferring hard, but settling for soft.

D'oh! I misremembered. Scratch the five bolts, as Cal doesn't even have the exotic weapon proficiency he'd need to work the repeating heavy crossbow. Sorry about the confusion.

I'll say you had time to load before rolling initiative, so you can attack this round, if you like. They're all in your third range increment, though, so you'll take a -4 attack penalty this round. The archers are moving and firing, moving and firing, so they're only able to advance 30' each round. But the spearmen are double-moving, so they're able to get 60' each round, so next round you'll still be -4 against the archers, but only -2 against the spearmen, and so on.

If this still holds, I'll take a shot at one of the archers.

Attack Roll = 1d20+4 (+8, -4 range) = 24

You're on open grassland right now, so the nearest cover is 300 feet away. If you move at a dead run, you can make it in five rounds. If you're not using an instrument (other than your voice) for your bardic music, then you can use it while moving without penalty, though if Cal doesn't move with you, he'll be out of hearing range in about three rounds (but if I remember correctly, the effects of bardic music last for a few rounds after you stop playing/singing).

If you want the repeating crossbow (and budgeted for it), you can still use it without the Exotic Weapon Proficiency, you just take a -4 attack penalty.

Your attack roll does hold, and though the confirm normally would not have confirmed the crit (the archers are AC 15), the bonus from Red Feather's bard song pushes you over, so the crit is good! (Don't forget to add +2 to your attacks and damage, because of the bard song).

The bolt burrows deep into the archer's chest, and the creature stumbles to one knee, gasping for breath. He appears to be stunned, and his bow falls to the ground. (I use a critical hit chart, so the effects of a crit don't always end with just the damage multiplier - in this case, he also took an extra 1d6 damage, on top of your multiplier, and is stunned for the next round). Nice shootin' Tex!

The remaining archer will fire at Cal, since he appears to be the greatest threat at the moment ...

... and misses badly!

New round. As a move action, Red Feather could have drawn his bow last round, if he wants to attack. If you choose not to draw your weapon, but instead continue moving toward the trees, you will be 180 feet from the treeline at the end of the round, and 120 feet from Cal. If you drew last round, then you only moved 30 feet toward the trees, and if you attack this round, you can move another 30 feet, which will put you 60 feet from Cal and 240 feet from the treeline. Up to you. You can still be singing while you're doing all this.

Cal, reloading a Heavy Crossbow is a full round action, so are you reloading this round, or doing something else? You can see that Red Feather is bolting toward the trees. He's at least a full double move away ahead of you. Two of the spearmen are veering off to pursue him, the other two and the archer are still moving toward you.

Before you get a chance to leave, both of you hear movement in the trees, and it seems much more clumsy that what you would expect from the rangers and druids hereabouts. There are too many trees in the way to tell what is making the noise, but you figure whatever it is will probably make your clearing in about three rounds.

PS - I'm off to bed, it's late, I'll resume sometime tomorrow afternoon.

Tate leads Amie surely throught the woodland, to a small copse of trees on a small rise. A fireplace made by a ring of squared stones sits in the shade of an elm. A pair of elk antlers is attached to the tree, and a leather patch hangs below it. A quote from the parables of Erastil is engraved in the leather.

"Family is the root of all good."

A deer carcass has been expertly butchered here. A cable stretches into the tree limbs, with a block and tackle. On a hook at the bottom of the cable is the skeleton of the deer. The gore and blood has run into a drainage channel, and been covered with soil. Strips of dried meat hang in the sun to dry. A flat stone has salt and spices laid on it. Almost nothing is wasted.

Tate quickly and efficiently starts to break down the camp. He packs the meat into a leather bag, and tosses a chunk of excellent jerky to Amie. He leaves the fireplace, and the shrine. The carcass, he drags into the trees. He throws the meat he cannot carry into the trees after it.

"Some scavenger will eat well tonight. I saw a fox b&$~% nosing around after the meat earlier. I think she has a litter somewhere near."

He adjusts the straps on his pack, and takes a walking stick to hand.

He takes a last look around, to make sure his camp is properly broken. He nods, and smiles briefly at a job well-done.

"Onward to the elves. Would you honour me with some scripture, as we go?"

Edit: We posted at the same time. I am going to assume your post is after mine, and that the sound comes to Tate's clearing in the woods.

I'll just keep the heavy crossbow rather than take the repeating and suffer the -4 penalty. Cal will run to catch up with Red Feather, using a full-round action to go 80' (20' armored movement x4) and positioning himself between RF and the spearmen. Sorry about that, I meant to get back to your subgroup yesterday evening, but then a friend of mine who lives two counties over called me and needed some help setting up a new computer and printer (she's completely computer illiterate), and I didn't get back until very late and was totally exhausted.

I've got to head out to work here in just a few minutes, but look for me to get you guys back into it sometime this afternoon.

In the meantime, basically what Coraline knows is that the raids and depredations haven't struck Drellin's Ferry just yet, but they've been drawing closer, and the other towns and villages in the area have too many problems of their own to be able to send help. There are a couple things that give you cause to fear that Drellin's Ferry might be targeted soon for something more than just a small raid:

1. It is the main river crossing for travel between Nirmathas and Nidal, and the only one within several days' travel.

2. The goblinoids have shown a considerably higher degree of organization than is characteristic of them (raiding parties have often consisted of well-trained and well-armed conscripts, with multiple goblinoid races represented in the same party).

Based on that knowledge, you can assume that you'll need to travel to the Fangwood (which is only a couple days away, on foot) to try to convince the elves and rangers to organize against the threat.

I had actually forgotten to apply the x4 movement rate to the dead run, so actually all of you (including the hobgoblins) were able to get twice as far over the first two rounds. By the end of the second round, Red Feather made it to the edge of the trees (and now has the benefit of cover), then stopped to fire at the hobgoblins. Because the hobgoblins were moving at an angle and Cal was moving in mostly a straight line, he is able to gain enough ground on them that he will be able to Charge one in the third round.

I'll see if I can get a battle map put up here shortly.

With the Quick Draw feat, you can do draw as a Free Action, meaning you can draw on the move without losing any of your speed multipliers (or, if not running, you can draw without sacrificing a standard or move action). Without the Quick Draw feat, though, it is a Move Action to draw a weapon. If I understand it correctly, on a dead run, you basically get the equivalent of twice your normal move actions (x4 speed if you do nothing else), and on a hustle you get 1.5 times your normal move actions (x3 if you do nothing else). Drawing on the move, while moving one of those increments will essentially drop your movement by one increment (from Run to Hustle, or from Hustle to Walk). So you would be able to Run 120' in one round, or Hustle (run while drawing) 90'.

Right now, there is just the one battle map in that share folder, titled "Fangwood Battle 1.pdf." You'll notice the squares are lettered along the side and numbered along the bottom, so use those coordinates to specify which enemy you're attacking, where you're moving, and so on.

As Scranford pointed out, no need to roll anything to cast Bless. And since you both had two rounds to prepare, you can still go ahead and make an attack or cast another spell. Tate was holding his action until the attackers broke into the clearing and were within 30 feet, but Amie will get one freebie action before we go into combat rounds.

You wouldn't end up in H-26, because you're moving diagonally, which follows the one square - two square - one square - two square formula (every other square counts as two). You would technically end up in his square, or rather halfway into the next one, so you could do one of two things at the end of your run - you could choose to remain in his square and enter into an opposed grapple (and if you lose, it'll randomly dump you into one of the adjacent squares), or you can roll out to I-28 (yeah, it's bending the rules slightly, but it's fine).

The attack doesn't kill him, but it wounds him pretty badly.

Here's the battle map for Tate and Amie. I just kind of randomly stuck the two of you in a small copse of trees in the clearing in a position that'll give you both point blank range when they enter the clearing. You could also get that from the copse of trees to the other side, if you would rather be there (or anywhere out in the open, but you wouldn't get cover then). I'll update the maps each round as positions change.

Here's Cal and Red Feather's map, following Cal's charge. As you can see, he is literall on the corner (the enemy's space was 35 feet for Cal, and the space at I-28 is 45 feet, so he's halfway between). He'll have to either grapple the prone hobgoblin to remain in that space, or roll out to I-28, since he can't stay on a corner.

That hits, and the archer grimaces, but continues his move toward the trees, raising his bow as he moves, taking aim at Red Feather ...

... but his shot goes wide and thunks into the trunk of a nearby tree.

The archer is now at F-30. I'll hold off on the spearmen's attacks until I know what Cal is going to decide to do for the end of his Improved Overrun attack.

Coraline gives her leave to her employers, thanks them for their kindness and declining her last days’ wage, takes a bottle of wine for the road instead. Whith promises or returning to the tavern keeper, she then whistles deliberately and from underneath the shadows of a large table a huge red mastiff lazily pulls himself to full height and sniffs the still tavern air.

“Woof ?”

The bartender, a kindly dwarf, steps in from a back room. "Well, I certainly thank ye for yer time, lass. No more traffic that we get herabouts, I'm sure I can handle things until Dora gets her newborn off her teat! But one last thing - would ye mind taking my table off the back o' yer horse ... er, dog ... er, whatever the blazes that thing is?"

Diego, Lucky Hans and the ladies can travel easily to the southern reaches of the forest in a couple days' time. This conversation at the bar could easily have happened before the events unfolding in the southern wood, so your group will arrive just in time to see the hobgoblin party split ranks, half of them moving toward a pair of travelers coming from the east, and half of them moving into the trees. You see that one has stayed back from the fight and is watching, but when it catches sight of your approach, it ducks into the trees. By the time you get to where it was standing, you can not only see the battle beginning at the edge of the trees, but you can also hear shouts and grunts as another battle seems to be underway some short distance into the trees.

Oh yeah. I forgot about the 5 ft/10 ft diagonal rule. I don't think I'll choose to grapple him, but just get barely beyond him and prepare for a cleave attack next round.

Red Feather in a smooth motion as he was taught nocks another arrow, pulls back and lets fly at the moving archer.

MW Longbow Attack (1d20+9=13)

But he failed to adjust to the branch that the wind pushed in front of his arrow just as he released it, knocking the shot astray.

Coraline, with near trance like calm, unsheathes a silver blue rapier, a hairline thin azure streak of lightning trails the foil’s blade as it escapes it’s ornate scabbard.

“It’s seems those interesting times we have spoken of have found us.”

With nary a glance back to her stalwart companions, adrenaline filled leg muscles propel her to the closest of the combatants.

“Barley Rye, SAVE THE RUM AND ALE !” command for trip attack

"And hopefully we can tell who the ‘good’ guys are.”

Make that Initative 18 (+1 for Favored Terrain) please.

"I'd say this is just like old times, but we just met!" Diego begins casting Scorching Ray at the nearest hob or gob he sees who is not in melee!

Initiative:1d20+2=15
Attack and Damage: 1d20+4=20, 4d6=11

The he moves thirty feet closer to the fray!

Can I assume he has Mage Armor already on? He'd keep it cast as he walked, just in case...

I will assume you guys are joining the battle that is going on out in the open (mostly)? Knowing that there are rangers and druids inside the forest that can probably take care of their own, you can reason that the two people being attacked at the edge of the forest are probably in greater danger.

Coraline, this is where you need to declare what your 1st Favored Terrain is. Because this battle is taking place where plains meet forest. If you have Plains as your F.T., you will get the +1 to your initiative if you go for the ones that are out in the open attacking the human warrior. If you have Forest as your F.T., you will get the +1 to your initiative if you're stepping into the trees to go after the archer that's moving in on the human tribesman who already made it to the cover of the trees(assuming it survives long enough to make it into the trees).

Diego, it's fine if you want to have your Mage Armor already going. You guys caught sight of the fight just as it began, so you've had a couple rounds to cast buff spells and whatnot. Early in the chase, one of the archers took a stunning hit from a crossbow and fell to a knee before struggling back up and continuing the chase, so he's a round behind the others. You can catch him with your spell this round.
