Okay, here are the details. Character generation is going to be point buy, using 20 points. Any Beta classes and races are allowed, as well as tieflings and assimirs. Classes from splat books are at my discretion, so please ask first before you use on. 1st level characters. 150 gp to equip your character. Anything else ask.

I'm gonna wait a bit with my character. I have three ideas for a character, but want to see what the others decided on before I pick.
I'm working on a half-orc barbarian, Branth Bummugboar. She may or may not be a sensitive kind of half-orc. Probably kind of a recluse, more at home in the wilderness and alone than among the company of either orcs or humans. Playing with the idea of having her strongly dislike elves in general, or at least dark ones.

What's the method for hit points?

Steve Geddes |

I'd like to play a half elven ranger, I'd plan to follow the archer route. I have a sensible question and a newbie one:
1. Are you using the traits from second darkness player's guide?
2. I've been browsing the PBP forum for a month or so, though this is my first time as a player. How do dice rolls work? I'll be posting from work sometimes - I reckon I can rig up an excel spreadsheet and name it "funding proposal.xls" or somesuch ;)... However, I've heard various references to dice rolling software/websites (?)
Looking forward to playing. (Even though it means I'm going to have to sit on my brand new second darkness books for a good few months when they arrive).

Most people use Invisiblecastle for there dice rolls.

Standard hit die plus Con bonus for starting hit points.
wait. roll standard hit die for starting? or max HitDie HP at first per the basic Pathfinder rules? Note: this will sway my character choice...I'm not playing a super fragile Wizard...
(I'm a big proponent of the extra 1st level HP =D )

![]() |

Uh, why is it Druids/Sorcs/Wizards get 30gp more than they could start with, and Melee classes are stuck at half of what they could possibly start with? This Paladin can't even afford Chainmail, well I could afford it, but have nothing else...I feel even worse for a Ranger...Longbow will take almost everything for them...Average according to Pg98 Beta for Paladin is 175...guess I keep giving everything away...heh

Caladan Delathia |

Introducing Caladan Delathia, half-elven ranger.
My first shot at a PBP character (and a PF character, for that matter) so let me know if I've left something out, should have use spoilers more, less or whatever...
I havent given him any traits, let me know if I should have, although his background is based on the "researching the blot" trait from second darkness player's guide.
Given a recent thread on cheating by "reading ahead", I should probably make explicit that, whilst I do own the Second Darkness AP, they are unread (and will remain so for quite some time - my tabletop group is probably two years away from needing them..)

![]() |

I got two questions DM
1: Would it be possible for me to attain a double crossbow(pg. 208 Pathfinder Chronicles: Campaign Setting)?
2: Would it be possible for me to take the Crossbow Mastery feat (pg. 10 CotCT Player's Guide)?
Ok, make that three or four
3: Can we use the feats Jason showed here?
4: If so, would the bonus from Shield Focus (+1 bonus) apply if the person were using two-weapon defense(+1 shield bonus)?

Uathach of Iomedae |

Here's Uathach.
I based him around the Scouting for Fiends Trait.
I also used the Upgraded Paladin that Jason posted a while back.here
I also have Second Darkness, and I perused it when I got the first couple, but have no in depth knowledge of the adventure, and I have only referenced the Pathfinder: Companion for info during creation.

DM Dave |

Okay, time to answer a few questions.
1) Anything that has been published for Pathfinder is allowable. That includes traits, material from the Campaign Setting, anything that Jason has explicitly posted for playtest, etc.
2)Shield Mastery and Two Weapon Defense would not stack. Two Weapon Defense is predicated on using two weapons, using a shield as a weapon negates it's effectiveness as a shield for the round that you do so. Therefore you would not be able to use feats that rely on using the shield as a shield.
3) I set the starting gold at 150 for everyone, because that is the standard used by the Pathfinder Society.
4) Hit points is max hit die plus Con modifier.
5) All the races I listed are EL 0 for my campaign. The buff that Pathfinder gives the core races is enough that it effectively negates one effective level in my opinion.
6) I don't mind if you have read the aventures beforehand, so long as you don't act on knowledge that your character would not know.

I must confess my ignorance. Traits? What?
Please excuse the dumb look on my face. I'm new to 3.5 rules from 2e and although I have read familiarized myself with the Pathfinder Beta rules (through Chapter 11, Spells; all of the player material basically), I don't recall reading about traits. I'm guessing that this is something touched on in the Second Darkness supplements or in the campaign setting hardcover. Is there a page online that lists some traits? If not, will my character be at a disadvantage if she does not take a trait?
Thanks for you patience and sympathy. ;P
Newbily yours,

Traits are something that came out with the Second Darkness Player's Guide. They are basically little quirks for your character that don't do a whole lot. One person described them as being half a feat. I don't know of any place online that actually lists them, but they are not anything that your character will be disadvantaged by not having.

You can always give him the options of the Second Darkness Campaign traits, so he can pick one of them...
Like the campaign trait I chose is: Searching for Fiends: I'm in Riddleport looking for evil outsider, the mechanical bonus I gain is a +1 to attack known evil outsiders.
I chose Extra traits as my Feat choice...with those traits: I have rich parents and I'm an armor expert...(start with 900 extra gold and suffer 1 less armor check penalty)
I can list some of the names of them when I get home from work...then you can choose the ones you think sound cool, and I'll give you a lengthier description and the mechanics of it.

Hey, that's cool of you. I will take a look at them. It sounds like traits might be helpful in character development. So far all I have are ability scores and skills, along with gender, race, and alignment. I should be able to take some time to dork out with my character sheet tonight, and be able to post it by Friday. If DM Dave wants it before then, I'm sure he'll let me know, and I can prioritize it.

OK, I'm home, I've eaten and now I can type out the gist of the Campaign traits, which tie the characters together into the specific location for the adventure.
1. Fools for friends you're not a gambler, you hate it in fact, but you need to watch out for a friend at the Gold Goblin
2. Into enemy territory: the shadow is visible all around riddleport and has druids, rangers and rural folk worried, you're one of those folk. An eccentric friend you need to talk to is supposed to be playing int he tournament at the Gold Goblin
3. Looking for Work: You're trying to get work at the Gold Goblin
4. Optimistic Gambler: You're a gambler, and you plan on playing the "Cheat the Devil and Take his Gold" tournament.
5. Researching the Blot: you finally settled on the safety of the Gold Goblin for your
6. Scouting for Fiends: That's the one I'm doing. There to investigate the "Cheat the devil and take his gold" tournament...
These are just outline traits....very simple, no mechanics involved, to give you an idea how the campaign traits tie into the story, which I'm sure will be more apparent once our glorious DM gives us the background info.

DM Dave |

Okay, in the way of background, Riddleport is a wild town in a wild land. It is a haven for pirates and people looking to start their lives over. Mostly it would be left to it's own devices except for two things.
One is the mysterious Cyphergate which looms of the city. This ancient and mysterious rune covered arch spans the mouth of the city's harbor and attracts scholars and sages from all over Golorian looking to solve it's mysteries. The other is a more recent phenomenon that the locals call the Blot. This dark spot hovers in the sky above the city like a shadowy eye.
The city is currently abuzz about the "Cheat the Devil and Take his Gold" gambling competion. Marking the grand reopening of the Gold Goblin, this is the biggest, richest contest the city has ever seen. Whether you are in town to study the Cyphergate, research the Blot, or win big at the Gold Goblin, you are sure to find excitement and adventure in Riddleport.

This sounds like it would apply to Branth Bummugboar, the half-orc barbarian. I'll take it.

![]() |

Introducing Branth. She still needs to pick up some gear, but I think otherwise she's good to go. Let me know if I am missing anything.
Into Enemy Territory:
The Shadow in the sky is visible from all around Riddleport, not just in town. It's certainly come to the attention of several rangers, druids and other rural folk who dwell in the nearby mountains, forests, and swamps-among them, yourself. You've consulted with several seers and Harrowers, and may even have performed some simple auguries yourself, and all the signs point the same way-something or someone in Riddleport is connected to the blot, and it means bad news for the region. You've avoided the sleazy, dirty town for most of your life, traveling there only when absolutely necessary, and although you don't relish the prospect of going there now, you see little other choice (especially if one of your superiors is ordering you to go investigate). Fortunately, an eccentric friend of yours (another PC), is in town, and you've heard this friend will be taking part in some gambling at a place called the Golden Goblin. Your friend has always had better luck interacting with the cityfolk, so you've decided to accompany your friend to this gambling tournament and plan on letting him finda safe place for you to stay while you're in town. Your long life of self-sustenance has toughened you and made you more resistant to hardship, in any event-pick one of the three categories of saving throw. You gain a +1 trait bonus to that save.

Thanks Xaaon! That's perfect for Branth. Perfect!
Dave, I'm about to update Branth's equipment list and then she should be good to go. She got everything she needs for well under the 150 gp allotment.

Raoh |

Should have the rest done later on. Here's a look at the background and description.
...I think I got a little carried away. I will say this this possibly the longest background I wrote for a character.
BACKGROUND
Raoh started life as, Raoh Vi Jeggare, Viscount of Westcrown and heir apparent of House Jeggare. Born in the golden facade of Westcrown, Raoh's family saw great things in his future.
As soon as he was old enough he was enrolled in the finest academies the imperium had to offer. By the age of fifteen he joined the imperial knights, with his long time friend Flynt, and was on his way to joining the Hellknights. But that's where his fate changed.
Raoh was different from your 'typical' Chelaxian. He hated the current state of the country, and the diabolism around him. He had no love for slave trading, and hated the way nobles treated the less fortunate.
Eight weeks after joining the knights, and seeing how little they valued commoners, Raoh resigned. He soon cut ties with his family and moved into lower quarters of Westcrown. Flynt stayed saying there was still good to be found and service.
During his stay in the lower quarter Raoh found himself at odds with the few guards that did partol the streets. Finding himself in jail on multipule occasions for stopping tax collectors, or fighting off guards beating on a helpless person.
During a blistering summer day the wate in lower quarter turned fowl. The people were able to gather enough funds to hire a noble of House Leroung to investigate and prify the water. After spending a day looking for the cause of the impurity, the noble claimed all was fine and that the water would be fine the next day. The day passed and the water was worse than before.
Raoh enter the noble quarters and soon found himself at the noble's home. Seeing no guards present he approached and knocked on the door. After no answer came Raoh let himself in. After climbing through a window and checking a few room he found the noble. After a tussle Raoh was able to reclaim the money the residents has raised.
It wasn't long after returning the money that the guards were after him. Getting what little he had, he ran. After a few days chase Raoh managed to find passage to Varisia, and out run his captors. Today Raoh lives Rotgut District of Riddleport doing what comes natural for him. Helping those in need and giving the Gendarmes a headache.
As for his deeds in Westgate, the last time he looked into it a bounty of 150 gp was on his head. "Only 150 gp, I'm worth way more than that"
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION & PERSONALITY
Standing 5'10'' and 206 pounds. Raoh could pass for human if not for his molten copper colored eyes and his unnatural agility. His skin is tan, and light brown hair.
He hates the upper classes, such as nobles, because he has seen their oppressive way of doing things. Because of his helpful nature he is beloved by people like a big brother, despite being loudmouthed and sarcastic.
The one thing that stands out most about Raoh is the blade he weilds. A longsword that is a coil of razorsharp steel.

DM Dave |

Dave I was wondering would the variant class features from the Pathfinder Campaign setting be allowed (I'm mostly looking at the Fighter variant [War College trained; Skill points become 4+int], or the Cleric variant)? Again, more interrested with the the fighter than the cleric.
Yes, I will allow the variant fighter or cleric.

Raoh, I read your spoiler. It seems like Raoh might be a good friend for Branth to have made in the recent past. Given her selected trait "Into Enemy Territory," she would ideally have a friend in Riddleport who is tied into some of the shadier underworld aspects. Would that be Raoh, perchance?

Definitely some kind of spellcaster - I dont think it really matters which. We have a Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin, Ranger and Rogue so far.
Early on healing is going to be a problem. In the long run though, Arcane magic is looking like a definite gap which needs filling, imo. (Though I guess that "long run" in a PBP game is a fair way off...)

I'm thinking about having Branth try for some arcane magic, possibly sorcerer, once she gets several Barbarian levels under her belt. I haven't really looked at the sorcerer material yet, but I believe they depend on CHA to cast, in which case she should be passable for a few levels in the class--maybe more if somehow she gains better CHA.
