Wolfgang Baur's Open Design is ramping up!

Halls of the Mountain King will be a very untraditional dungeon, an homage to Moria and Undermountain that does add a few twists.

Check it out HERE and support the OGL!!!

Not sure what the patronage model of design is? Here is the FAQ

Want more info? Just post here - lots of Open Design fans hang out in these parts.

Some brain storming already in progress making it a good time to get on board and help shape the adventure. Wolfgang's last update of 3.5 vs 4E for the project was a dead heat.

Is there any way to buy this product after its done or do I have to buy prior to it being done?

Good question!

The short answer is before/during. Usually you can buy the last project as as a patron of a current project. This is a bit more dicey so I wouldn't depend to much on this without talking to Wolfgang.

By being a patron you participate in whole process - the earlier you get in the more you begin to feel a degree of ownership. Even at the $25 dollar you're getting an absolutely amazing product from an industry giant!

So go sign up for the OGL release! You can always upgrade your entry at a latter time.

the Problem is Live Journal is blocked at my work and most of my computer time when i could contribute is at work

The Exchange Kobold Press

Ah, that's definitely going to make it tough. I'm afraid I don't have a solution, short of going through some kind of TOR/onion router.

Wolfgang I have another question on paypal its my wifes email account how can I let you know my email? and whats the count at cause if one more 3.5 will sway it I will put the money in.

Now if i dont get it where can I buy the PDF after you guys finish?

The Exchange Kobold Press

You can put your email in the Notes section in PayPal. Or you can buy it from the Kobold Quarterly store, in which case you can enter your email as well.

The patron projects are limited editions, and distributed to the folks who commission them. So, "after they are done" they go to the patrons, and that's it. I know, dumb marketing, but they aren't really about a mass audience.

If you want to wait until after it's done, well, you'd have to be a patron of the next one to get a copy of this one. And honestly, it's just more fun to see the brainstorms, polls, pitches, and collaborative work on playtest making it a better adventure. So, sign up today.

What does this mean exactly? If I became a patron of Halls of the Mountain King it would make me eligible to also purchase the previous project? This would also mean there is no way to purchase any other projects (meaning previous to the current one) that have been done already?

Lastly, when is the deadline for signing up approximately?

1. If you become a patron for _Halls_, you have access to the recently released _Tales of Zobeck_ (OGL) and _Wrath of the River King_ (4E)-- both are fantastic and gorgeous adventures. I've managed to get a review on _Wrath_ posted to Enworld and I'm working one up for _Tales_. Those are the only two Open Design projects you'll have access to purchase; Projects 1-6 are closed to the public. The OGL _Gazetteer of Zobeck_ is publicly available.

2. The deadline for signing up is usually when the errata version is released-- so, June-ish. However, if you want to pick the version you'll get, you do that with your wallet. This adventure will be 4E or OGL depending on which version reaches the sufficient amount of patronage first. If you really want this in OGL, you should go sign up now for OGL. You can always upgrade your patronage later.

Actually, the Gazetteer of Zobeck is available to the public right here on Paizo. There's a review here, and a second
review of it on RPGNow.

The Gazetteer part of Halls of the Mountain King will be available here as well.

My money (now wolfgang's money...) is on 3.5! Loking forward for this dwarven goodness!!!

I confess I've been puzzled by the folk who've noted that they plan to wait until the edition is decided before joining. I would encourage anyone interested, OGL or 4E proponents, to contribute now and help shape the project. If 'your' edition 'loses' Wolfgang will refund your donation, or if you desire it can be shifted to the 'winning' edition. Kudos to Wolfgang for setting up a no lose situation for the patrons. While I hope the OGL is victorious the scope of the project is such that I'd even consider financing 4E (which is a hard thing for me to write). Become involved as little or much as you desire. Even the ideas that aren't used in the actual project may spur possibilities. Really, much fun for everyone involved.

I'm in on Halls and hoping for 3E/OGL, but I'll continue my support of the project and Wolfgang's great Open Design projects, regardless of edition.

I´m in as well, and hoping for OGL. Although, knowing Wolfs quality in writing and knowing some of the earlier projects, I am tempted to spend the money on my first 4e product if it need be. I did buy the Zobeck Gazetteer already a while ago, so Halls is what interests me.

Also in and hoping for OGL. The discussions are fantastic, I must have read at least 500 posts in the last few days. Everything from whether Dwarves like Art Nouveau Architecture to what sort of Big Bads there will be. The whoele thing is still wide open to great new ideas, so get in there quick!

The commission is half filled already, with OGL in the lead.
Come on, 3rd Edition fans - let's get this awesome adventure and Gazetteer commissioned!

This Open Design is on fire! Commission was target for End of February but it's looking more like End of January. If you are on the fence, jump in! For as little as $25 you can be a part of D&D history: Wolfgang is one of only major players out there still writing OGL material for us 3.5 fans. Vote with your dollars and get a phenomenal adventure with some insights into the esoteric craft of development and design (the other D&D).

What DitheringFool said!! LOL

This is scooting ahead and 3e or 4e I'm looking forward to this. If your looking for a high quality 3e adventure then join now and beat us 4e guys to the finishing post, and we're making a bit of a comeback so don't delay.

I have (had!) some disposable income and even was able to buy Tales of Zobeck as a patron of HotMK. Definately go for it and definately go for OGL.

This project is just about ready to get the green light!

OGL is in the lead, but there has been serious talk of a conversion for 4E and maintaining a 4E Gazetteer with paragon paths, rituals, items, powers and more.

Once the project begins, the price for patronage will go up about $5, from $25 to $30.

Now's the time to get in and get brainstorming!

I hope it goes 3.5E.

Although, I admit, as some 4E fans pointed out to me on EN World, I feel bad that they have so little good adventure material for their edition.

So if 4E ends up getting the most patrons, it's OK.

The Exchange Kobold Press

The OGL is exactly one patron short at the moment.

Great! I hope it will start up tomorrow! Can't wait!

According to LiveJournal, the project has the green light and will be OGL. Yay us!

This project is go!

It has met commission and will begin development as an OGL project!

There will be a 4E conversion and if there is sufficient support, a 4E Gazetteer featuring new rituals, clan lore and rules, new equipment and magic items, and much more. Details will go to 4E patrons by email.

OGL has won! Not in two months as originally scheduled but in little over a week!

Here is blurb from HERE:

Open Design wrote:

Halls of the Mountain King has met the commission bar as an OGL project, and will be written as an adventure for levels 8 to 10, with more than 40 encounters. Congratulations to all the patrons who voiced their support for this edition of the world’s most popular role-playing game!

The adventure’s target length is about 120 pages, though it could be anywhere from 96 to 160 pages.

New patrons are welcome to sign up any time while the project is underway; design begins this week, so sign up today.

Sign up today and get in on the fun!

We've entered the playtest period, so if you're looking to check it out first hand and still make a direct impact, now's the time!

So, what stage is the project now ? When can we expect to see the book ?

Stereofm wrote:

When will then be now?

Soooon.

I planned a bit of a reminder push when we hit the errata phase, since that's the last real opportunity to get in the door, but now is still good...

We're in layout and editing, with an expected delivery date sometime in the next 10 days. Nothing from Wolfgang has indicated that we're off that schedule. It's going to be gorgeous, from what previews have indicated. The maps are fantastic--isometrics and detailed top-down cartography. The art is breathtaking with stuff from Hugo and others, but also at least one surprise artist that will blow your mind. And, of course, the story's rich with cults and NPCs and dilemmas to compliment the face-smashing. You will not be disappointed.

For the 4E-curious, we're in conversion mode. One section off to playtesting, I should hand off another section for playtest by monday, and others are in conversion by one or more other patrons.

Been so busy with life, haven't even had time to get back in.

Way behind on DaD as well.

Thanks for the update. Can't wait to get my copy.

The Exchange Kobold Press

Editing is done. We're in final layout, and I'm reviewing the galleys this weekend and early next week.

The 3E/OGL edition of Halls will ship in June.

The 4E edition is still in design, will ship in August.

I heard the 3.5 monster art is awesome... and maybe the 4e too! :D

Sweet! I've been looking forward to this one, but I can't quite figure out the messageboards on LiveJournal. Has this shipped already?

It has not, although last call for the OGL/3.5 version was just announced today.

If you're having a real problem accessing the livejournal site, drop me a pm, and I'm happy to help walk you through it. It's a fun process to participate in and watch.

Thanks! I'll do that. I thought that I would enjoy what was going on and participating in the polls and stuff but I just couldn't figure it out.

We don't try to be massively obscure, but sometimes it just works out that way. :)

Wolfgang Baur wrote:

Lol, I think it's just the layout of LiveJournal and my own discouragement/laziness with trying to figure it out.

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

I had a hard time keeping up the first time I was a patron. Sometimes now it is still hard to keep up, but I get better each project.

~sighs~ Just one more thing that I want to get in on soon!

Wolfgang, I just did the Bronze level membership. If I get an influx of cash at a later date, might it be possible to upgrade to a higher level smponsorship at that time, if only for the signed copy (if I pay that much)? Thanks in advance!!!

It just shipped to patrons for errata today...so if I had to guess, your chances of upgrading are slim. There's still a 2ish-week period for errata, so I could be wrong.

~sighs and shrugs~ Oh well. Thanks for the info!

I really love Hugo's piece on page 59. I think its the best color piece he has ever done.

As always enjoyed Jonthan Roberts maps.

Just a reminder, time is running out to join the patrons for Halls of the Mountain King. We're finishing up the errata on the OGL version and if you're not signed up by the end of this week, chances are you'll have wait for the next project in order get access to this one.

You can sign up here. As we've mentioned before, it's a practical adventure path, set in a dwarven mountain, for characters level 8 to 12. You've got about 17 maps and 27 gorgeous original illustrations. Your patronage includes the ~175 (errata may alter that a bit) page adventure and the (at least) 48 page Gazetteer-- though Wolfgang has stated that this is closer to 70 pages. The $29.95 price tag gets both PDFs and access to the lulu print option around the 15th of July. Come get all the adventure with almost none of the wait!

The 4E project is still in the works...so plausibly you could sign up for it to get access to the OGL, but I don't anticipate that many folks are looking for that-- but it is there.

Here's to hoping you join us!
