Athletics is back?

Skills and Feats

Liberty's Edge

I recently downloaded the Barbarian beta revision and noticed that Athletics is included as a skill. I'm trying to find Jason's thread on this but haven't done so just yet.

If this is accurate, is it simply Climb being renamed or have Jump been taken from Acrobatics and rolled into Athletics. (Swim still remains separate.)

That said, I remain perplexed why certain divisions still exist:

1. Knowledge (nature) and Survival. What makes these different? I have not seen a roll for a Knowledge (nature) check or Survival check that doesn't allow an alternative roll vice versa.

2. Knowledge (arcana) and Spellcraft. This would have made more sense. (In a similar vein, what ever happened to Concentration checks that weren't magic related?)

It would seem if skills were being rolled together, these two would be the more logical of combinations.

The Exchange

dude, dont get my hopes up. I havent seen this being official mention yet either. I hope so

See Jason Can You Please.

It's a third party compilation of the proposed changes for Paladins, Barbarians and Animal Companions. (The link to Rapidshare is about halfway down the thread.) The skill, Athletics, is included for Barbarians.

Still, I've yet to find the source that states this was Paizo's intent, or perhaps a 3rd party guffaw.

i would be ok with jump and climb one skill but not swim

I thought Jump was part of acrobatics, and climb and swim remained separate skills.

Could be a typo on the .pdf. (It isn't a Paizo .pdf, but a third party who put things together in a neat downloadable capsule.)

If Athletics is accurate, then aside from returning to 3.5 and combining Climb and with Jump, Athletics is odd, because it appears to be ONLY Climb.

That said, I still remain perplexed as to why Knowledge (nature) and Survival, among others, remain separate.

One is practical, the other is factual.

For instance:

DC 20 Knowledge Nature
These tracks are those of the low land troll, indigenous to these areas. Carnivorous in nature, and some what intelligent they tend to live in pair bonded families.

DC 20 Survival
The tracks you see before you appear to be that of a troll, they were made recently and lead to a small set of bushes not 10 paces off the trail, bushes known for having a similar coloration to natural troll flesh and often used for ambushes. (ROAR)

In modern terms, a biologist vs a boy-scout. The former might now be able to survive in the woods and the later might know what he is eating is safe to eat, but not know it genus and species.

That would be great to combine Climb and Jump into the Athletics skill.

Also combine Knowledge (nature) with Survival for above ground skill checks, and Knowledge (dungeoneering) and survival for the underdark skill checks.

Knowledge (arcana) and spellcraft should be combine, and bring back Concertration.

These are all things I could get behind! I hate that I will have to house rule these exact changes to make my game run more smoothly. I could even embrace the Fly skill if this where changed!
