It takes a short rest for Balenna to become conscious, so take your short rest stuff.

The witch slowly rouses and opens her eyes. The first thing she sees is Catriana splashing water on her. She spits on the bard.

Male Human Fighter 5 (Great Weapon Fighter)

Bren kneels down and slaps the prisoner. But not too hard, for fear of doing permanent harm to the already injured elf.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

She just glares at Bren.

Female human Rogue 5

Back.

Is Catriana playing a soothing song to make those surges go further? And if so, how many additional hp do we get? Eggers has either used 1 or 2 surges to get back to nearly full hp.

"Easy there Bren."

Eglantine looks towards Elias. "You know more about fey ways than any of us. What's the best approach here?"

F Half Elf Bard 4

Catriana uses her Song of Rest during the short break (every surge taken during rest gets a +4 hp bonus)

As Balena wakes up as spits on Catriana, she laughs and tells the witch: "Are you sure that's the way you want this to go? Don't you want to go back home to your Black fey friends?"

Male Human Wizard / 5

Used one healing surge, back to full thanks to the +4. Should we keep Bralenna the witch as trade bait with the River King?
"Where can we find an audience with the River King? If you lead us to his court safely, we will negotiate your release with him. That's a much better deal than dying quietly in these woods, yes?" Diplomacy, 1d20+9=20

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

"Pah. You killed my hunters and my boars, and you expect me to help you? Go, find the River King." She spits again, this time to the side. Then she changes languages.

Elvish:

Spoiler:
"And pray to whatever you honor that you do so before my people find you. He may kill you quickly."

M Elf Ranger (beastmaster) 4

Elven

Spoiler:
"Interesting..."

F Half Elf Bard 4

Catriana senses the witch has become less defiant, so she continues to talk to her, switching to elvish as well.

Elvish:

Spoiler:

"This doesn't have to end this way. You fought bravely and honorably, so we don't have any ill feelings towards you... Know that you can talk your way out of this."

(If the witch seems to listen:)
Recalling the information she knows about fey and told her friends the day before, Catriana adds: "I'd like to offer you as a token of my good will one of the songs I know. It's from where I was born, which is... pretty far away from here. Would you accept my offer?"

Words of Friendship (+5 to Diplomacy Checks), Diplomacy (12+19=31)

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Balenna hesitates at Catriana's offer before answering with a question. Elvish:

Spoiler:
"And what exactly do you ask in return?"

F Half Elf Bard 4

The conversation becoming a bit warmer, Catriana allows herself a smile, then thinks for a few seconds before answering.

Elvish:

Spoiler:
"We would like to know the exact whereabouts of the River King's court and how to get there from here, so we could seek him out". Catriana looks at Balenna for a while, then asks: "What's the Black fey's relations with the River King anyway?"

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

The witch's tone turns more curt.

Elvish:

Spoiler:
"No. One thing for one thing. That is the way of the Feywild. If you want more . . . well, you can swear fealty to the Black Fey."

She smiles.

Female human Rogue 5

In her halting elven, Eglantine chimes in, looking carefully at the fey witch to judge her reaction.

Elven

Spoiler:

"Catriana, we should be very careful to say exactly what we are asking for here. The words will matter greatly I believe."

F Half Elf Bard 4

Catriana listens to Balenna's response then smiles back at her and answers in elvish.

Elvish:

Spoiler:

"I think we'll pass the offer of fealty for now..."

Hearing Eglantine's advice, she asks her, this time in common: "Any objection about my earlier phrasing? Seemed decent enough to me, but I'm always open to suggestions".

If Eglantine says no, Catriana turns back to Balenna:

Elvish:

Spoiler:

"Fine. One thing for one thing. Sounds reasonable. In return for my song, We would like to know the exact location of the River King's court and the safest way to get there from here, so we could seek him out as soon as possible".

Female human Rogue 5

In common.

"Your phrasing is fine, but asking where the River King's court is is one thing. Asking for a safe way to it is another. I don't know exactly how this works. I'm trying to think of another gift, in case we need it."

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

"Save your breath," Balenna says in Common. "There is no safe way for mortals anywhere in the Feywild."

Elvish:

Spoiler:
"I can not direct you to the Court of the River King. There is no way to walk from here to there. But I will tell you how to find one who can give you an invitation to the Court. In return, you will teach me a song of the lost folk."

Insight DC15 for Elvish-speakers:

Spoiler:
"Lost folk", of course, refers to elves or eladrin who have not lived in the Feywild.

If Catriana makes it:

Spoiler:
You certainly know some

F Half Elf Bard 4

Elvish:

Spoiler:
"Fair enough, but we agreed on a song from the place I come from. I don't know who these 'lost folk' are."

Catriana pulls out her small harp and plays a tune about a knight-hero who decides to leave all his worldly possesions and retires to a distant desert. On his way there however, he gets attacked and killed.

The witch laughs.

Elvish:

Spoiler:
"Mortal fool. I agreed to no such thing -- we're still bargaining. I enjoyed your song, a nice interlude. Now, let's get back to striking a deal. You told me what you want and what you'll offer, I told you what I want and what I offer. Make a counteroffer, and pray I don't lose patience."

F Half Elf Bard 4

Catriana answers calmly in elvish.

Elvish:

Spoiler:
"Very well. Didn't we agree about the 'thing for a thing' part? As you aren't going to give me a whole thing, merely part of it, I shall teach you only part of the song. You'll have to add something to the equation if you want all of my song. That's my counter-offer".

After answering, Catriana plucks a few of the harp strings, as if to add weight to her argument.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

The witch smiles. Elvish:

Spoiler:
"Ah, you're better at this than I thought. Part of a song of the lost folk, for part of the way to the River King. Done and done.

"Now that we have a bargain, I suggest -- merely suggest -- that you unbind me as we each go our ways. You would not care for Clan Starlight's wrath."

Her smile grows broader.

Her smile grows broader.

Catriana smiles back calmly, and speaks in elvish.

Elvish:

Spoiler:
"Done and done. We have a Bargain. However, as you must have noticed by now, we haven't bargained about your release. What would you offer us for that?"

Catriana's smile widens as she continues: "I was thinking about an oath of fealty, but you could offer anything else which you consider equal to your life."

Diplomacy (1d20+15=35)

Female human Rogue 5

Eglantine realises exactly why Catriana is a bard and she's an ex-acrobat with serviceable knife skills. A smile of appreciation creeps over her face.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Common:

"You weren't listening, my dear. No need for negotiation on this. If you do not free me, my Clan will wreak its vengeance. Very simple."

Insight DC12:

Spoiler:
She's not bluffing.

M Elf Ranger (beastmaster) 4

Elias adds, "She means it. The wrath of the fey is not attractive."

Insight... very high. 23.

F Half Elf Bard 4

Catriana rolls her eyes back and answers in common as well: "This so-called 'vengance' doesn't intimidate us. After all, we did slay quite a few of your friends quite easily so we could do it again. The other question which arises is how exactly will your friends know we did this and not some other fey tribe or group of adventurers? We could also bury all these bodies so it would take much longer for anyone to find out where did all these fey disappear to... In any case, I think it's better for you to simply swear fealty and keep your life."

To the group: "We should decide what to do with her. I don't like the idea of releasing her back to her friends and would prefer to keep her with us, unless she swears fealty or gives us more useful information."

Back to Balenna: "While we're at it, I think it's time to honor our bargain".

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

"I thought for a moment there that you were an intelligent being. I regret my error. You think you can murder Black Fey in the Forest of the Black Fey and have them not know? If you do not believe me, ask your fey friend.

"Meanwhile, the bargain we struck. Follow the river for two nights. You will arrive at the Birch Queen's Fair. There, seek out Ambertan. He can give you an invitation to the River Court. Now, my piece of song . . . "

M Elf Ranger (beastmaster) 4

Elias murmurs to Catriana "Be careful. The one thing that is constant about the fey is their changeability. That and I will not be party to an execution."

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Hello?

M Elf Ranger (beastmaster) 4

Elias murmurs, "It is best we comply."

Female human Rogue 5

"I believe her, Catriana. I'm sure Elias is right."

Hello?

I'm here, just waiting for more party members to express their opinion. Catriana doesn't want to get in a fight here, and if no one agrees with her she'll give up and release Balenna.

Male Human Wizard / 5

"I understand that some of you are bound by a much stricter higher power than I. If you must honor your word then do so by releasing the witch. I feel her fate will eventually be met," Cyrus mutters the last bit, "on to seek the River King's audience."

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

The emerging consensus seems to be to release her, but I'm not hearing actions, so I'll borrow a trick from Rev. Next two people to post, tell me what you're doing with her, and we'll move on from there.

Male Human Fighter 5 (Great Weapon Fighter)

After hearing the deliberations, Bren says his own mind.

"Aye, release the woman."

Female human Rogue 5

"Sing and free her."

Eglantine keeps her hand on her dagger, in case the terms of the contract change unexpectedly.

"I don't think I can kill in cold blood," she adds very quietly indeed.

F Half Elf Bard 4

Understanding the situation, Catriana teachs Balenna the first few verses of a song she knows, then adds:

"I guess the rest of my friends are nicer than me. Let's hope you fill your part then", while releasing Balenna.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Balenna rises and spits on the ground again. "A good enough song for a mortal, as far as it goes. Perhaps we'll bargain for the rest of it another day."

She then moves off deeper into the woods.

Male Human Fighter 5 (Great Weapon Fighter)

I'm down to 5 HP. My surge value is 13. I'll surge 4 times to get me to full (54).

Male Human Wizard / 5

Full HP, 7 of 8 surges, 1 AP, Daily unused

I'm pretty sure Catriana can make that more efficient for you.

I'm pretty sure Catriana can make that more efficient for you.

Catriana used her Song of Rest, which adds 4 hp to any surge used during short rests, so you can surge only 3 times

Male Human Fighter 5 (Great Weapon Fighter)

Thanks!

I am heading out of town Fri am (US) through Sun eve. I will probably have some access, but given that we're at a natural break, we'll just pick this one up Sunday night or Monday. Feel free to state intents, or chat among yourselves.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Ok, folks, it's early afternoon. What's the plan?

Female human Rogue 5

"The Birch Queen? Elias, have you heard of her?"

Eglantine gathers herself and her belongings together and prepares to move on.

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

This is an Arcana check plus some RP reason to have some info

Sovereign Court

<ahem>

M Elf Ranger (beastmaster) 4

Sorry, crappy Arcana check.

"I have not; what of you, Catriana?"

F Half Elf Bard 4

<ooc>Arcana (1d20+10=14)</ooc>

"I don't think I know anything about that Queen, sorry".
