Monk Suggestion

Classes: Bard, Monk, and Rogue

The Exchange

Ok well, it is the middle of the night so please bear with me. One of the things that has bugged me about the Monk is that he is not efficient as a second string fighter which I have always felt he belonged as. Someone to take care of the multitudes of smaller foes so that the fighter can go toe to toe with the Big bad directly. And though I have seen suggestions to fix this and or to make the Monk a front line fighter I have not noticed this particular suggestion and as such I am putting it out here and seeing what comes of it.
At 8th level I purpose that the monk gets to add one additional weapon to his "monk weapons" to allow him to use it as his flurry of blows. I see this mainly for two weapons, the gauntlet(which in some ways should already be one, but lets not quibble) and the spiked chain.
I would also suggests a couple of "wraps" that count as gauntlets in the magic section to encourage this so that the monk can get some of the extra umphf he has been missing. Well thats my 2 copper take it or leave it.

In Neverwinter Nights, they had the gauntlets specifically for monks that enchanced your attacks and added fire/sonic/cold damage. Is there any reason there are no gauntlets like this in D&D as it stands now? I dont see the issue when they have to use a magic item slot (hands) to use these. Maybe there is something Im not seeing that makes this unbalanced. My D&D foo is weak, that I have no problems admitting :)

General hate for the monk class? :P

Getting serious, I don't particularly see this as being overpowered. It would be balanced by not being able to use other glove type items, such as the Dex boosters.

I can remember seeing Jet Li do some very funny trip attempts and general fighting with chains and ropes, combined with fighting bare handed, in some of his movies. so this would fit the idea of the monk as a martial arts fighter.

I am running the Tower of the Last Baron and Kirth is playing a Monk. With that said I want to put something out that I am still hashing out.

I have Green Ronin's Advanced Gamemaster's Manual, on page 132 it speaks of rearranging the chakra's (locations of magic items) for various classes. Let's consider that there are basically 12 body slots for magic items. If we consider the AGM's suggestion the Monk's 12 slots are: Crown (headband, hat, helmet, phylactery, or tiara), Neck (necklace, amulet, brooch, periapt, scarab,or cameo), Shoulders ( cloak, cape, or mantle), Navel x2 (belt or belly gem), Wrists (bracers or bracelets), Hands(gloves or gauntlets), Fingers x4 (rings), Feet(boots, shoes, sandals, or stockings).

Now the idea is that the comment about adding gauntlets as a monk weapon at a higher level is a valid one to consider for houseruling if nothing else. It is interesting to see the Monk’s abilities being tested and found wanting.

Just my 2 cp.
