I emailed customer svc directly. I only posted this here in case others had the same idea...

I apologize for the delayed response. I was researching to see if there is any way to pull this off, and unfortunately there really is not.

One of the biggest (but not the only) problems with this is that we do not have a means of keeping a payment method private from the recipient. While you may trust your friend completely with that information, we do not want to have the possible liability. We also do not have the ability to have one person with two Pathfinder subscriptions going to two different addresses.

The best suggestion I have for you would be to provide your friend with prepaid Visa or Mastercard that he can input as his payment method.

Gift subscriptions such as this are one of the many things that Gary has on his to-do list, so we hope to be able to provide this option in the future, but it is not available at this time.

Thanks,
cos

Thanks Cosmo.

Looks like I'm left w/ a few suboptimal choices. Either the prepaid credit card or perhaps me getting 2 PF subs sent to my house (let me know if that's not possible either, please), and I simply give him the 2nd copy. But then he loses a subscriber discount when he orders related products from time to time (e.g., PF Companion volumes). On the 1st option, is a PF sub yearly--i.e., I give him a prepaid cc once/year--or would I need to do this every month b/c it's an ongoing sub? If it's the latter, then that's too cumbersome an option.

Yeah... I appreciate that these are not the best options. Unfortunately, it is due to some quite fundamental aspects of the very architecture of the software of our system that makes these sorts of gift subscriptions difficult.

As for the prepaid card, my suggestion would be to open the prepaid card with a large enough balance to cover the year (or six months, or whatever) and have your friend attach the card as the payment method of his subscription. Then you can periodically make deposits on the balance of the card for as long as you like. This way he retains the subscription in his name (and all of the inherent benefits of this: the PDFs, the discount, the messageboard tag, etc.), and you retain the privacy of your payment information.

If you and your friend both have PayPal accounts, PayPal now offers debit cards that tie directly to your PayPal account (my wife has one). You could use this method, have the PayPal debit card on file, and periodically PayPal your friend the money (perhaps once a year). This would ensure that the account stays funded and the subscription continues.

Of course, there's nothing to prevent your friend from using that debit card for other purchases and spending your "gift" on other things. This is obviously not an issue if you trust your friend implicitly.

Ok, some things to think about and discuss w/ my friend. Thanks guys.
