Rogue Observations from my Pathfinder Playtests So Far


Classes: Bard, Monk, and Rogue


So far, I've see several rogues in my playtests. I've had a goliath rogue/barbarian, a human rogue, as well as a half-orc rogue.

Rogue One: Thug Build (Goliath Barbarian/Rogue 2/3)

The rogue/barbarian was built as more of a "thug" barbarian, a combat support character that could hold his own but was much more effective when aiding in combat.

The boost in hit does does help in this regard, as the rogue doesn't loose nearly as much versus the "tanks" as they do with a d6 over the course of a campaign.

With minimal dexterity and a non-stellar intelligence, the goliath still had a pretty good range of skills, although he much better and sneaking and acrobatics than he was at finding traps, since he was sans int bonus skill ranks and dex bonus.

On the rogue side of things, the goliath didn't have many complaints. He was happy for the bonus sneak attack damage on creatures that he could hit, especially when he got to sneak attack undead with chairs (he loved improvised weapons).

Overall, the combination of the barbarian and rogue made him a good back up front line fighter, and an extremely effective flanker, and being a goliath and with his escape artist ranks, he could grapple effectively, but was nearly impossible to grapple himself.

Rouge Two: Con Artist Warrior (Human Rogue 7)

This particular build was interesting, as it made use of the minor magic ability to give the character disrupt undead as a spell, so as to aid him in his con that he was a paladin.

He was built with a lot of detection abilities, and was pretty good at locks and traps, as well as disguise, but wasn't much of a stealth character. He actually wore heavy armor to play up his charade, as well as having high diplomacy and bluff skills.

He also used feint a lot to do extra damage. He never got the chance to disrupt undead in the adventure that we played, but he did put up a convincing front. The heavy armor didn't do much to hinder his rogue abilities as he built the character, and again, he was a pretty effective fighter, either flanking or with his feint ability.

Rogue Three: Thug Build II (Half-orc Rogue 2)

This one is still going at the moment in my playtest, but so far has been interesting. Again, the extra hit points have been noticeable, and with average intelligence and dexterity, we gave this rogue Open Minded to gain him five extra skills, which at first level gave him a pretty phenomenal range of skills that, for the most part, were at least +4, covering nearly all of the standard rogue skills.

I was wondering if Open Minded is too good as it stands, but since it doesn't exist in the Beta proper, just the SRD, I'm not sure if this will be addressed or not. Just as the fighters two skill points may not be an issue at higher levels, when he can diversify more, Open Minded may not be nearly as big of a problem when the 1 rank per level wall is making it less useful.

Given that most of the character's career has been at 1st level so far, he has gone done about as easily as any 1st level character, after two hits in about four rounds of combat.

Still, like the other two rogue builds, this one has been fairly effective as a straight up fighter when it needs to be.
