I vaguely remember watching Astroboy as a child. Enjoyed Speed Racer in high School. Didn't get seriously into anime until 2001, when I sampled lots of stuff (esp. when VHS shows were going cheap because of DVDs). Those that made a big impression:
Escaflowne
Macross
Big O
Noir
Tetsujin 88
Kikaider
X-The Series
Generally I prefer series over movies, because movies rarely develope characters really well.

Anyone remember "Battle of the Planets?" I watched it as a kid - the English dubs featured none other than the ubiquitous Casey Kasem - then saw a few episodes re-dubbed in the 1990's as "G-Force".
...and 7 zark 7, and keop, and tiny, and princess...
(and the 90's "g-force" dubs sucked...)

I agree. Half the fascination for me at 8-years-old was the burbling noise Keop made every other word. I found out later that it was because supposedly in the original every other word was a cuss word, I think?
I always loved the shot of the ship breaking off into five pieces. I can still remember the tune of the theme song.
I'd love to find some Dvds of that somewhere.
Never got to see Voltron, David. I want to though.

I would highly recommend Hajime No Ippo (Fighting Road in the States, it is about Boxing. I know it doesn't sound awesome, but it so very is) and Yakitate Japan (which is about baking. Again doesn't sound awesome, but very much is up until the third or forth story arc)
Hajime No Ippo was good. I didn't watch the entire series but what I did see was quite enjoyable.

Loved Overfiend. Ah, the memories. Bible Black is soooooo much better, however...and the game that the anime is based on even better!
I'm watching GoLion(Voltron) even as we speak. Subtitled, of course. It's an interesting look back into history- the storyline is so much more mature, but not so pretentious that you want to turn it off. Also, has anyone watched the 90's Gatchaman remake? I wuved it, and the song my Ichiro Suzuki as well. Speaking of remakes(or at least continuations), Mazinkaiser was AMAZING- I strongly suggest all super robot fans watch it, not just fans of Mazinger Z.

Anyone here see an anime called Genshiken? It's a anime about a university Otaku club. Basically comic and video game fans. I really enjoyed the show, even though the characters are Japanese I feel like I know them all. It's fun to see people are the same all over the world.
Ah! I totally forgot about Genshiken! That really is a great show.
I thought of another one, does anyone remember Iria? It was a prequel to this early nineties live-action Action/Horror movie. They played it on Sci-Fi channel once or twice, it was one of the first anime series I ever saw.
Also, has anyone seen the new Rebuild of Evangelion? Its Evangelion, but as 4 full length movies instead of a TV show. The first three are going to retell the same story as the show, and then the fourth movie will be an all new ending. Supposedly, its going to be a lot more accessible to non-fans of the series (Read: Make more Sense).

I so need more anime but at roughly $30 for 4 episodes (dependant on series) its not going to happen unless I can source it better. Sometimes I hate living in England.
I think my favorites currently have to be some of the more recent GUNDAM series SEED and SEED destiny particularly.
Cowboy Bebop I never could get into, though Outlaw Star I did quite enjoy.

Least we not forget: Legend of the Overfiend
I know I'm not the only one that watched it...
Ahhh, Overfiend. Especially the Manga release! Take one extremely wrong porn anime and cut out all the actual porn. What do you get? An extremely wrong anime that's somehow even more offensive than before!
Yeah, not one of their better ideas...

Where is Cowboy Bebop on these favorite anime lists?
I thought that one went without saying?
It's the bee's knees, and an all-time favorite(along with the rest of the "space-wester troika" that came out around the same time: Trigun and Outlaw Star). It just gets folded into my love for Lupin III is all.
Also, adding an insanely emphatic recommendation for Monster along with Le Chevalier D'eon. Monster is made of dangerous levels of win and different. I wholeheartedly endorse both the anime and manga.
Not for Le Chevalier though. For heaven's sake watch the anime first for that one. They're two very different animals.

So many...
Howl's Moving Castle - My all time favorite!
Neon Genesis: Evangelion - Messes me up every time I watch it.
Cowboy Bebop - So good, so slick, so much fun.
Ghost In The Shell (The Series) - Very moving at times, and super cool. You gotta love the major.
Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind - So sad, so good. Wow.
Full Metal Alchemist - Long, and at times overwrought, but ultimately a great story worth watching. Love the homunculi.
Azumanga Daioh - Hilarious and cute.
Berserk - So much great character development, and a love triangle between a woman and two men for once.
Deathnote - Great new series, can't wait to see where it all goes!
Super Dimensional Fortress Macross - Such a great story for something I saw as a small child. This show taught me early on that war had real consequences, and that often the best people die for no reason, unlike other shows like GIJOE and Transformers that tried to shield me from reality because characters dying in war would be too traumatic...
Vampire Hunter D - Huge inspiration on me in terms of horror. Also, D is truly badass.
Trigun - Dated, but still awesome when its firing on all cylinders. Love a character who tries constantly not to resort to violence.
The Big O - A bit campy but still quite enjoyable.
Akira - The one that got me into all of this in the first place back in the 80s.
There's more, but this is what comes to mind immediately.

I know I'm not the only one that watched it...
Phew! I thought no-one would list it and I'd be a pariah coz I mentioned it earlier in the thread.
Who would've thought demon's tongues could be so... nasty.
BTW: The American edited versions are crap. Sure they make it more palatable, but leave huge chunks of story out too. Just so you know. Get the original Urotsokidoji OVA.
I also prefer subs to dubs in case anyone is keeping count.

Voltron(orginal) or Voltron(vehicles) which is better in your opinion?
Orginal here.
There were vehicles? ;p Lions are the only way to go. I always pretended to be Lance, the pilot of the Red Lion. I even made my mom by a jacket like his for me to wear. Granted having Tim Curry voice Lotor in the CG remake was great, but I still didn't like it as much.

What about Starblazers?
I loved Starblazers. For people our age that was probably their introduction into Japanese anime.
Edit- Is there a channel that shows Starblazers or would I have to buy a DVD?
David Fryer |
Have to buy the DVD. However, there is a web comic, starblazer: the Rebirth. I'm reading it right now and it's pretty good. Most of the characters are either the children or grandchildren of the original Star Force, since most have moved on to their own commands. However Dereck and Sandor are both still around. You should check it out.

OT: I briefly thought you were talking to yourself there for a moment... :P
LOL, I thought that for a split second as well.
BTW if anyone decides to try some of this recommended anime we should probably report back and let the other know what they thought of it. I'm trying out Ergo Proxy and so far so good . . . but I haven't hit the halfway point yet though.

Animes I've seen and in order of how much I like
Escaflowne series and movie (My all time favourite), Outlaw star, Megas XLR (Not really an anime but what the heck,) , Tenchi (all the different series), Record of Lodoss war, Full metal alchemist, .Hack, Hellsing, Bubblegum crisis, Dragon ball (all of them). Probably at least another 20 beside this but these are the ones I remember.

The original Starblazer was greatness. I watched it religiously as a kid. I can even still hear the theme music in my head.
We're off to outerspace
We're leaving mother earth
To save the human race
Our Star Blazers!!!
Searching for a distant star
Heading off to Iscandar
Leaving all we love we behind
Who knows what dangers we'll find
We must strong and brave
Our home we've got to save
If we don't in just one year
Mother earth will disappear!!
Fighting with the Gamalans
We won't stop until we've won
Then we'll return and when we arrive
The earth will survive
With our Star Blazers!!!
God I loved that show growing up. The Argo was sweet, but I have to admit that the Andromeda was my favorite ship on the show. It killed me as a kid when it got destroyed against the comet empire. I heard there was talk of a live action Star Blazers for awhile but that it got shelved for various reasons. Here's hoping they actually do it.

Yes, and I actually find myself in possession of one too many copies of it. If you want one, I'll gladly send it your way.
It's good. Time has moved on for the characters, but of course pesky *you know who* is trying to get back into this reality through the woman whose body she could have jumped into at the end of the first Bible Black series. I can't wait to see the remaining episodes!
While we're talking about Voltron, I can't wait to get Dairugger XV on DVD(Vehicle Voltron). GoLion was so very different, I'd love to see the differences with this one too.

Actually I hope they DON'T do a live action Star Blazers- not at least without redoing or re-releasing the entire original animated run. Much like with Macross, if you're going to do a movie, take steps to separate yourself from the parent work before going big budget. The Macross comics that were out a few years ago (early 05-06, not the academy comics run) did this for any robotech movie that would come out, I hope they do the same for star blazers.

I just posted this in the Movies section, but I thought I would place it here aswell.
Was watching Attack of the Show earlier, and found out that Warner Bros. has purchased the rights to make a live-action Ninja Scroll flick. Watchmen co-writer Alex Tse is to write the screenplay

@Montalve, they are some of my favourites. Though the list keeps on changing every month... ;)
Not an anime, here (though there is an anime of it), but anyone else like Cromartie High School?
It's stupid, and bizarre, and surreal, then an extra dash of stupid, but I think the writing has more depth than at first glance.
I actually did LOL at it this weekend.
Not seen it, but if you're up for some 'rude' anime comedy, I recommend Oruchuban Ebichu. You'll never think of hamsters the same way again. Just don't watch more than 1 episode in one sitting, space it out, otherwise it looses its luster.
Cheers! :D

Reading over this thread was filling me with all kinds of nostalgia. Sadly I can't watch most of my anime anymore as I don't have a VHS player anywhere in the house. Anyway some of my favourites (movies are allowed, no?):
Akira (Of course. I watched it again recently and was impressed with how good it still is. The fact that I understood more of it only made it better too.)
Dragonball (The original series; moreso for when I was younger but I could still watch episodes and get a larf. Dragonball Z would be good but it got way too ridiculous toward the end of the Frieza arc. Before then I can still enjoy it greatly though.)
Gundam Wing (Plus Endless Waltz; it was the first series to get me into mechas.)
Princess Mononoke (I can't recommend this enough, great movie)
Vampire Hunter D (Both the original and Bloodlust; my brother basically got me into anime with this.)
Vision of Escaflowne (I much preferred the movie to the series however.)
And finally my guilty pleasure, don't hate me!:
Sailor Moon (Tuxedo Mask is still all kinds of awesome.)
P.S. I have watched Legend of the Overfiend as well. Thanks for bringing the scarring back to the surface!

What about Blue Seed and Those Who Hunt Elves? Surely I'm not the only one who has seen them. And has anyone seen Black Magic M-66? What did you think about it?
I got hold of Blue Seed late last year but only watched it a few months ago. I thought It ended up being quite good: a solid monster hunting show.
I haven't seen the other two shows.

One of my favorite moments and character from D.Gray-Man
Winters Zokalo (The scene in question is at 4:20)
Andrew Turner |
Nausicaä and Spirited Away (I probably watch this one at least twice a year now).
Also, Kiki's Delivery Service; and I'm fond of the Vampire Hunter D series.
There's a certain Mythos anime I won't even name here--if you know what I'm talking about, you know why I don't bring it up amongst polite company, and it's the only DVD not readily available to grab off the shelf at home. It really is very good, though...
