I decided to see if any one out there was anime fan, like me. I grew up watching it as a kid. My earliest memory was watching Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. It was Akira that got got me hooked though.
So what are you favorite animes past/present?
If I had to rank my top ten it would look like this:
1) D.Gray-Man (Manga is awesome, too bad the anime just ended)
2) Bleach (From the first episode I was hooked. (The fillers make me cry though)
3)Naruto: Shippuden (I find myself liking this better that the first part of the series)
4) Tetsuwan Birdy: Decode (TV adaption of the manga/ova Birdy the Mighty. Like the story and the animation.)
5) Bounen no Xamdou (Excellent story and the animation is great. My only problem is it being exclusive only to the PS3 owners)
6) Tales of the Abyss (Never played the PS2 game, but the series is good. Most people don't like the 2+ minute entrance though.)
7) Full Metal Alchemist (What's not to like. I do prefer the english voice actor to the japanesse)
8) Casshern Sins (Loved the orginal Casshern. Shaping to be a great show)
9) Dragon Ball Z (It got silly after awhile...GT I'm looking at you)
10) Hokuto no Ken Raoh Gaiden: Ten no Haoh (Even though only one episode is out so far...it's Fistof the North Star! I can find no fault in it)
Yeah, I know the shows listed are new. But they make up my weekly viewing, and they're awesome.

Yeah, I'm a fan. I grew up with the stuff that was dubbed in the 80's: Robotech, Voltron, Astro Boy etc. But I only started watching anime as a hobby when Manga UK started distributing the shows aimed at older audiences in the local video shops here in Australia in the early-to-mid 90's.
My first show of that period was 3x3 Eyes (Boy, did I have learn to run before I could walk or what?). After that it was stuff like Guyver, Ninja Scroll, Cyber City Oedo 808 (I still maintain that the Manga UK music soundtrack is superior to the Japanese one), Macross Plus, The Castle of Cagliostro and so one. I miss that kind of show, particularly with the Anime industry in the dire straights it's in now.

Fist of the North Star is awesome. Have some disks of that.
Also consider Yu Yu Hakusho. Makes for a very good M&M Campaign setting.

That was an great series. Never got to finsih watching it though:(
I'd like to see how well 4e could fit an anime-like campaign.

I enjoy a good number of anime/manga, although there's a great volume I just can't stand(there are entire genres I desperately wish I could drop kick).
Catching Vampire Hunter D and Robot Carnival while staying up late turned me onto it, as did that one obscure short they used to show on Liquid Television. Someone will know what I'm talking about. The one with the racing and the ghosts?
The artist/style crossover with many of the videogames I loved helped too.
If I had to boil what I love about the medium to one movie, it would probably be Castle of Cagliostro, the Lupin III movie Hayao Miyazaki directed. Hot damn that one takes me to a happy place.

Anime that I like, lessee...
Vampire Hunter D was the first one that I saw and it just blew my mind. In the years since then, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Doomed Megalopolis, Rurouni Kenshin (only the first two seasons - the rest sucked) and its counterpart, Samurai X: Trust/Betrayal, Bleach, Azumanga Daioh, Gunslinger Girls, Martian Successor Nadeisco, Noir (ZOMG) have all become favorites of mine. There are a few that I keep starting and stopping (dammit):
1.) The Twelve Kingdoms: REALLY need to finish this series.
2.) Gasaraki: Start. Watch five episodes. Year (or two) passes. Try again. Wash rinse repeat.
3.) Full Metal Alchemist: Must...finish!
4.) Silent Moebius: Again...start stop start stop. WTF.
5.) Fushugi Yugi: Start stop start stop start stop. I'm noticing a trend.
Do Not Want:
1.) Neon Genesis Evangelion: No. And for the umpteenth time, I did NOT get my forum name from that series. >.>
2.) Rah Xephon: Couldn't get into it, though I tried.
3.) Crying Freeman: Again, couldn't get into it.
Color Me Curious:
Death Note, Naruto
Manga that Should Be Anime:
Kurosaki Corpse Delivery Service
This list is by no means complete.

Just a heads-up: Even if you finish the anime, you technically won't be finishing the series. Apparently the anime stops right in the middle of the story it was adapting from the novels, or it tacked on a different ending in an earlier point of the story.
Forgot to mention this, but I wholeheartedly recommend Le Chevalier D'eon. I don't want to give away any of the surprises, but if you're interested in a horror/fantasy/mystery/political-intrigue/historical series set in the years leading up to the French Revolution, this is a good series to check out. It gets bonus points since, even though it's still loosely based on historical fact, it manages to get far more details right than most anime dealing with Western history and culture typically do.
It's the series I'm currently working through. That and Gurren Lagann, which I'm loving primarily because it's so aggressively anti-Evangelion it's made me forgive Gainax entirely(FLCL and watching Nadia again helped too).

Otaku, hardcore and proud here. I'm more old school than most, I while away the time watching UC Gundam, Silent Mobius, Gall Force, Guyver, BGC, and other things that noone watches much anymore. I prefer manga in my dotage(Bastard, Gantz, Black Lagoon, Battle Angel Alita: Last Order), but I do watch stuff now and again. In terms of newer stuff, I'm a huge fan of Black Lagoon(I look almost exactly like Dutch, I've been cosplaying him for two years now, I just wish I was taller), new Guyver(an interesting contrast to the original series), and of course, Macross Frontier, which is blowing my mind, even as we speak. The music is amazing- I can't wait to pick up the soundtrack(s). I also hope to pick up Super Robot Wars Z for christmas, along with a japanese PS2 to replace the one I lost...*sniff*

I suggest you read 12 Kingdoms, Crying Freeman, and Gasaraki moreso than watch them- its' a lot easier to enjoy. For Silent Mobius, Bandai just put out the first movie on DVD- check that out as opposed to the series, I greatly prefer it. And I also got Kia Asamiya's autograph!!!!! WOOOHOO!!!!
Benchak the Nightstalker Contributor, RPG Superstar 2010 Top 8 |
I don't think I can put them in order, but here are a few of my favorites!
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex both seasons, man those Fuchikomas are adorable!
Read Or Die the OVA and the TV Series
Excel Saga
FLCL
Gunslinger Girl
Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu The original series was pretty good too, but toward the end it got into that DBZesque "lets spend three episodes on one fight" thing, which I hate with a passion. Fomoffu was just plain old crazy fun though.
Ranma 1/2 was delightful for about three or four seasons.
Mahoromatic I didn't enjoy how either of its seasons ended, especially the second (WTF?) but I've got a soft spot for robots, and it was cute.
Serial Experiments Lain
Boogiepop Phantom
And, yes, I know its the show everybody loves to hate, but I honestly do still enjoy Neon Genesis Evangelion. Its my guilty pleasure, please don't lynch me.
Shows I'd like to check out/finish:
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi I've caught the first two episodes, and so far I like it.
Trigun Which I've seen about half of.
Nerima Daikon Brothers

I am a HUGE anime fan. Favorites for me include...
Bleach - In my opinion the best Anime on right now. I can't think of any show I have liked more even going back to Starblazers. Absolutely love the anime and manga of this. The japanese version is finally back in Hueco Mundo and the story is really picking up steam in the manga as well, as the top espada are finally battling SS.
Gundam Seed - I have been a fan of several of the Gundam stories, but this is my favorite. Kira is a bit angsty for my taste, but the story itself is phenominal. The tech on the Gundams themselves is top rate and the animation is gorgeous. I have only begun watching Seed Destiny and it is a great continuation of the story.
Naruto Shippuden - Much better than the first Naruto series with perhaps the exception of the Sasuke retrieval arc. The manga looks like it is beginning to head toward a conclusion as Madara has sanctioned an attack on Konoha and Naruto has finally surpassed Jiraya. I am really interested to see how this is going to play out and whether Sasuke will end up a villain or hero.
There are many more, but I have to go to work. I will post again in this thread later with a more complete list of my favorites.

Full Metal Panic: FumoffuFomoffu was just plain old crazy fun though.
Yeah!
I don't watch most of the anime in our house; I tend to catch the wife watching it, as I wander in and out. But FMP:Fumoffu is one I'll break off and have a laugh at.
I'll have to list what we have (likely a long list...).
My daughter loves Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli stuff, and can watch a whole film end to end, when she won't normally sit still.

Alternatively, sort out your Fayne? posts so I can post the rest on my journal, reply to my e-mail about our campaign and maybe even do some work? Honestly!
Sorry to thread-jack, albeit temporarily.
In terms of anime, I like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, Fist of the North Star.
My semi-depraved evil twin also likes Urotsukidoji (hmm.. the o with a line across comes out as ō - funny), Mezzo Forte, Beat Angel Escalayer.
Does Final Fantasy count? I don't think so...
Vendle |
DBZ when I was a bit younger. Of course, I watched Voltron years before that. Gundam Wing I took a liking to, then Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star. Wolf's Rain has some good episodes but 'meh' on the series overall. Same with Evangelion and Escaflowne. I only caught a few episodes of Slayers, but that was pretty good, too.
Despite owning DVDs from most of these shows, I don't consider myself an anime fan. I like cartoons, and I like fantasy and sci-fi stories. What I don't like are 'stupid' parts of anime: mouths that grow to gigantic proportions when yelling, geeks nosebleeding all over the place, cutesy pint-sized children heroes and/or mini-monster sidekicks, and moronic characters (I'm looking at you, Ranma 1/2, Chobits, and Magic Girl Sakura.

Martian Successor Nadesico is by far my all time favorite. I enjoy it because it makes fun of all the tropes that attracted my to anime in the first place. I also enjoy Slayers, Appleseed, Mezzo,Outlaw Star, Bubblegum Crisis, Akira, and Mabaraho. I thought Escaflone was alright, mainly because I liked the idea of fantasy mecha. The one that I enjoyed despite myself was Angelic Layer. I also enjoy the Naruto manga, but not the anime.

Bweeehee! I knew if I hung around on the interweb long enough I'd find someone else who remembered Liquid TV. God, I loved that show! I think the name of the short you're talking about is from a OVA called 'Neo-Tokyo' If I recall, it was three shorts combined into one (Sorta like Robot Carnival)
Incidentally, I think I watched the same night you saw With Vampire Hunter D and Robot Carnival. I'd been into a pseudo-manga called Ninja High School at the time so the seeds of the fandom were there, and when I saw those movies it was pretty much the jumpstart of a fanboy.
These days I don't watch as much as I used to Work, Time, Money, and mainly there's just not that much that interests me. There are some good movies and such still coming out. I loved 'Metropolis', and I'm eagerly awaiting the Disgaea series...
Oh, and hey! If any of you guys live in or around or even not too terribly far away from the Cincinatti, Ohio region, there is a semi-small anime convention called Sugoicon that runs from Oct 31 to Nov 2. If you're interested you should really check it out. It's a pretty good time!

You are about the first person I have run across who has even heard of Ninja High School. The fridays when I only had enough money to buy X-Men or Ninja High were the worst times of my life. Of course Ninja High always won out in the end.

Total n00b here!
I loved the Neon Genesis Evangelion box set that someone loaned me.
Mezzo Forte I got into because someone took Mindless Self Indulgence songs and cut in vids from that show. sick and fun!
Do full lengths count? Loved most of Akira and all of Grave of the Fireflies.
Ghost in the Shell was pretty cool. And Princess Mononoke was AWESOME!
Everything else has been just bits n pieces. MD Geist, Ninja Scroll, Hellsing, and Ive seen a few of Deathnote and liked those.

Where is Cowboy Bebop on these favorite anime lists? I'm shocked not to see at least one person mention it. It's an incredible mix of action and drama all set in space. Without a doubt one of the best animes I've ever seen.
Samurai Champloo from the same director as Bebop and is worth watching for the fight scenes alone. It's an interesting mix of typical samurai stories with modern flare.
The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi was another anime which I really enjoyed but I'll freely admit is not for everyone. The main problem is that the episodes aren't in chronological order. The first episode, for example, is a video made for the culture festival, which should happen towards the end of a school year. The Second episode is the first meeting of the narrator and the title character at the beginning of the school year. Anyways: good laughs and a sweet story.
Lucky Star is a purely comical anime by the same company as the melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi but is far, far less complex and completely fun. One warning though, the style is very sweet and cutie, watching this anime might give your eyes diabetes.
Guy Humual |
I should also note that some other really good animes have been mentioned already, FLCL, Excel Saga, Akira, Ghost in the Shell . . . so much great stuff. First half of Neon Genesis Evangelion was great. Mahoromatic was funny and sweet. I'll agree with whoever said that the ending was weird! Also almost anything by Hayao Miyazaki is good.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this series. Worth it for the music alone. :D
Samurai Champloo is on my "must finish" list.

Well, I'll admit that I'm a light-weight when it comes to anime. I used to watch it when I was younger and the Sci-Fi Channel had Saturday Morning Anime. That's where I saw Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Robot Carnival, and Lensman (among others). I've also seen Project A-Ko, but I don't remember if it was on Sci-Fi channel, or somewhere else.
I also remember one anime movie (not the title, however) about some young people with special abilities/technology/something, who follow some villain back in time to prevent him murdering of the young people's mothers. I think the final battle took place either on the moon, or in some weird pocket dimesion that looked like the moon.

In terms of newer stuff, I'm a huge fan of Black Lagoon(I look almost exactly like Dutch, I've been cosplaying him for two years now, I just wish I was taller)*SNIP*
Black Lagoon warms my heart because it does feel like one the mid-nineties shows that got me into anime in the first place! It's refreshingly unapologetic in it's violent nature, and the characters are an interesting, if scary, bunch of people to spend half-hour instalments with. Seriously, Rock is the man!
Where is Cowboy Bebop on these favorite anime lists? I'm shocked not to see at least one person mention it. It's an incredible mix of action and drama all set in space. Without a doubt one of the best animes I've ever seen.
I am suitably abashed. Bebop is indeed amongst the greatest.

I'm a big Bebop fan. I just put down my favorites that are on air, or that popped in my head.
I'm also an Eva fan. Never got to finish watching it though(missed the last four, or so episodes).

My major problem with Evangelion wasn't the ending, it wasn't the start, it was the choice to mash the two of them together. I enjoyed the first half. Great stuff. The last little bit was strange, but it would have been acceptable if the beginning had of been handled a bit differently, and it didn't feel right to me to have those two stories Jammed together like that. It felt a bit like bait and switch.

See, that's why I don't care for Nadesco- there's a fine line between parody and insult, and I think this series crossed it. That said, I enjoyed reading it more than watching it. That latter part may be a due to old age than anything else.

2) Bleach (From the first episode I was hooked. (The fillers make me cry though)
Yeah... no kidding. (and the way they just stopped in the middle of the current story did a cool story (filler, which had filler in it) and then went right back to the story in progress. It just seems that Ichgo is screwed, but Nel!!! (to the rescue...?)
One thing that I do not like in my anime is the BIG SMILEY GOOFY FACE in the middle of whatever moment. It usually totally kills the mood.
Full Metal Alchemist = A+!!!!BBQ!!!
(Make sure to see the movie after the series ends, it helps finish the storyline.)
Brent |
I'm not a big fan of Evangelion mostly because I never could really follow the story. It suffers from the same problems as Noein I think as both are convoluted. I read on Wiki or somewhere that the guy that wrote Evangelion was suffering from mental illness or something like that and the end of the show was supposed to be some sort of expression of that struggle. I wish I could remember where exactly I read it. Meh.
Other great animes....
Outlaw Star was mentioned by a few folks and it was a good story.
Bebop is an all time great and deserves to be mentioned with the legends of anime. I hated the ending, but that is probably what made the ending great in this case. I have a lot more respect for it now than I did 10 years ago.
My wife loves Inuyasha, but I was never able to get into it.
I like Yu Yu Hakusho a ton. For what is basically a fighting anime, there is some really great story involved in this one. By the demon world parts of it at the end it had lost some steam, but the dark tournament and even parts of the Shunsui arc were greatness.
Dragonball Z - Still rated as one of the most successful animes of all time. I loved it as a teenager. As an adult I find it to be corny in the extreme. I once described this show to a friend as roughly 15 episodes of guys firing energy blasts at each other simultaneously until one guys beam overpowers the other guys beam, 3 episodes of story, and 143 episodes of guys screaming like they have hemhroids while they power up. There are aspects of this anime that still show up a lot in modern anime, but at this point in my life I can't watch this show for more than 5 minutes without getting cancer or turning it off.
Stand Along Complex - A really good show that you have to watch a bit to fully appreciate. The animation itself is gorgeous and the story is equal parts complex and action packed.
Death Note - My wife swears by this show. I don't mind watching it but would pick other shows over this one if there were a choice.
S-Cry-ed - I actually really like this show personally. The american voice acting grates my nerves to no end, but I love the concept for the show as well as the inventiveness of the battles. The american actor for Kaname's voice makes me want to stab myself in the eye with a fork and the voice for Kazume is needlessly "I'm gonna kick your asses" all the time. A show that is much better with the japanese voice acting and an underated show in general in my opinion.
Karas - This is a stand alone movie anime but is wicked cool. Easily one of my favorite anime "movies".
Full Metal Alchemist - A very dark anime sprinkled with over the top lame humor. The story for this and some of its thematic undercurrents are very much adult oriented, but the merciless "short" jokes and random "exploded face big eye emoto-scenes" detract from it to an extent. When it is actually taking itself serious it is greatness, but when it isn't it sucks rocks. The follow up movie Conqueror of Shambala resolves some things the story sort of leaves hanging in a good way.
FLCL - Not even sure this is a real anime or just a bad drug trip overlayed with a 4 day insomnia bender. This show makes less sense than well, anything. Everyone I know who has heard of it loves it, which just proves that only people doing drugs even watched it.

Anyone here see an anime called Genshiken? It's a anime about a university Otaku club. Basically comic and video game fans. I really enjoyed the show, even though the characters are Japanese I feel like I know them all. It's fun to see people are the same all over the world.
