Just for fun, Jagor will spend some time at the blackjack tables. He doesn't keep his winnings since he is the house, but the pretty dealer knows a good thing when she sees it. She flirts with the ugly half-orc and makes it obvious to observers that he's not the sharpest knife on the table, "If he can win, surely you can, sir!"

He realizes she's making fun a little, at least of him, but she sure is pretty...

The girl, a tall half-elf whose family history must be some tale, since she clearly has some Shoanti blood as well, is named Annet. She seems to enjoy the half-orc's presence at her table, and most of her patter about him towards the other players is mostly teasing, rather than outright mockery. With her dark hair and olive skin (the Shoanti) and light green eyes (the elf), Annet is an unusual beauty, but her table is one of the most popular ones on the casino floor, and most of the players - who tend to be men - seem to lose just a bit more to her than to some of the others.

'Jugger' Thompkins wrote:
During one of his off-shifts, Jugger will go speak with a local metalsmith, and have some inexpensive 'starknife' and butterfly charms made that he can sell through the casino, the proceeds of which will be used to fund the shrine (minus a small percentage for the House).

The Gold Goblin's shrine to Desna is really just a small statue of a elven woman with butterfly wings, about 20 inches high, surrounded by incense. Nevertheless, it's one of the most popular stops on the casino floor, as gamblers throughout every night will approach it to whisper a prayer, touch the statue, and light a stick of incense in hopes that it will bring their dreams of riches to reality. Once word gets around that a priest of Desna has begun hanging around the Goblin, though, traffic at the shrine picks up, and Jugger finds himself stopped once or twice a night by a believer - most often a Varisian, but the cross-section of Riddleport society is broad - who asks him to pray with her, or to offer him a brief blessing. Sales of the charms he commissions are brisk, and Larur is careful to negotiate the percentage to the house down a bit from Jugger's initial offer.

I'm going to go ahead and roll for Makoa, since he hasn't posted since Friday. Anybody know where Jason is?

Week One:
Intimidate, using bonus (1d20+4=21)
Intimidate, using reroll (1d20+3=15)

Week Two:
Intimidate, using reroll (1d20+3=17)
Intimidate, using bonus (1d20+4=20)

Whoo!

Okay, so Week One's roll for Saul, using his Profession (gambling) bonus of +8 -1 (current profitability) +2 (Hezekiah) +2 (Jagor) +1 (Jugger) +2 (Makoa) =
profitability check, DC 20 (1d20+14=28)

It's clear by the end of the first week that the Gold Goblin is doing fairly well, and Saul is obviously pleased as he pays you all your first week's wages of 10 gp.

Week Two's roll, using Profession (gambling) +8 +0 (current profitability) +2 (Hezekiah) +2 (Jagor) +2 (Jugger) +2 (Clifford) +2 (Makoa) =
Profitability check, DC 20 (1d20+18=27)

Things are going even better by the end of the second week - Saul not only pays your wages, but there is actually some profit to split as well an additional 5 gp for each of you, as well as an 80 xp bonus. Pretty much every time you see him, Saul is smiling broadly, and Larur's usual seriousness has lightened considerably.

Spoiler:
Intrigued by the strange phenomenon that Sam showed him, Hezekiah is going to sneak off any opportunity he gets without neglecting his duties at the Goblin, to research it. Does it affect his own magic?

Hezekiah Sexton wrote:

Spoiler:
The phenomenon does not repeat, but during that hour or so after Sam points it out to you, your magic seems to be affected as well. Then, as abruptly as it began, the mist simply stops appearing.

The general attitude toward it among the cyphermages seems to be, "Eh. Strange things happen around the Cyphergate." More than a week's worth of research doesn't really produce any leads, but the fact that the mist drifted toward the Blot seems to suggest a link between them - which would imply a connection to the Cyphergate if (and only if) there is some link between the Cyphergate and the Blot...

Sorry for not posting. And thanks for rolling for me.

Makoa will do as he's told, break up fights, and make sure people aren't cheating.

Rewinding just a bit...

You tell Mavrielle essentially the truth - you went to capture the Pauper, the gendarmes showed up as a result of the fracas and dragged him off - and she is disappointed, but still happy that he's off the streets. She attends the magistrate's hearing for him, offering her testimony about her mother's rape, which is enough to get him hung rather than flogged and deported. Whether this is enough to satisfy her is not clear, but the matter is, for the most part, resolved.

The witnesses - most of them, obviously, sailors themselves, many of long years' standing - are universally at a loss to explain the surge. "Weren't no reason for't atall," one old salt tells Jugger flatly. "It's the Cyphergate, must be," says another, "either that or the Blot, or both of 'em. This sorta thing's gonna ruin the harbor if it keeps up, though. The Overlord had best be doing something about it!"

Jugger has no claim on anything in that pile. I would like to look over the shipping charts before they go anywhere, if the rest of you have no objection?

Sure! Also, is my XP right?

EDIT: I just double-checked the math, and it came out all weird. So let's try this again:

Stopping the heist: 175 xp
Beating up the drunks: 80 xp
Dealing with Slyeg/the cindersnake: 160 xp
Trashing the Pauper's Hand: 600 xp
Getting the Gold Goblin profitable: 80 xp

As far as I can tell, that's all the xp I've given out so far. That's 1095 (Jugger should have 680). Does that match what everyone else remembers/spots in the thread?

'Jugger' Thompkins wrote:

The charts are exceptionally detailed, covering most of the western Avistani coast, from the Lands of the Linnorm Kings to the north all the way south to Cheliax. In addition to a number of prominent trade routes having been carefully and thoroughly outlined, a number of less... prominent... routes, particularly involving coastal spots where a quiet rendevous might occur or a ship might shelter out of sight of passing military patrols, appear to be marked.

DM Shisumo wrote:

While Jugger has said that he has no claim to the loot, he will gladly pay the rest of the group for the maps, once he has earned enough gold.

For what it's worth, the charts are worth substantially less than what Jugger's share would be if he claimed one.

Actually, yes, she does. She's not completely happy about it, but then, she doesn't seem completely happy about seeing him stretch his neck either. Regardless, add another 200 gp to the pot.

Wow. I think Jagor's in love.

Jagor's making no claim, but sharp-eyed players will recall that he still has the dagger he confiscated (he's forgotten about it), which would be the only thing he's interested in, anyway. If you want it in the pile for distribution, that's cool.

EDIT: I believe it was stated that this was a masterwork dagger, we'd better include it in the distribution to be fair.

"Jugger want pretty map? You keep - Jagor just want to look."

It was indeed stated to be, but that's because no one had checked it for magical auras yet. It's actually a +1 dagger, with a resale value of 1,151 gp.

I believe that for the moment we should keep the magic dagger .

I`ll go and sell the rest unless anyone says differently .

Seems that Jugger deserves the sea charts if he's interested in them.

Never crossed my mind that the dagger was magical. Jagor has no special claim on it if someone else is interested in it.

Clifford goes out and sells all the spoils but the dagger and the sailing charts. Dividing the profits equally among himself, Makoa, Jagor and Hezekiah - as Ghorum isn't around to claim a share and Jugger has disavowed any other profits from the expedition - results in 331 gp for each of them. To which you should add your 25 gp in salary, if you have not already done so...

Makoa is able to take his share and his salary, put the two of them together, and end up with a masterwork Koth (which costs 340 gp). If he sells his old one, he can get 20 gp for it.

On the Wealday of the third week of your employment with the Gold Goblin, you are each going through your morning rituals when Saul comes to find you. He looks fretful, and as he speaks, he waves the key-prosthetic on his left arm around anxiously.

"I've got a problem," he begins, pacing in front of the group of you. "I... Larur is missing. he didn't show up for work today, and when I sent Bojask to find him, he came back empty-handed. What's worse, he says that Larur's flat had been tossed, the front door hanging open and some of the stuff inside taken."

Saul sighs, looking around to see that no one else is listening. "This is my fault, though, I'm sure of it. You see... well... Getting this place going wasn't easy. After my... troubles... a few years ago, getting the capital to start up the Goblin again was difficult. I had to turn to some... unhealthy... sources of funding. One of which was a man named Lymas Smeed.

"I borrowed 2,000 gold from Smeed. Smeed's a loan shark who works for Clegg Zincher, but I didn't have any options - I had to do it, and I had to use the Gold Goblin itself as collateral. So far, I've only really been able to pay off the interest on the loan, which of course has been larcenous, but finally, last night, I put together 500 gold to pay Smeed, the biggest payment so far - and something I have only been able to manage with your help. I sent Larur over to Smeed's place last night with the payment."

Saul looks up at you all. "And now he's disappeared. I can't help thinking Smeed might have something to do with it. I know Zincher was looking forward to holding the loan over me - if I pay it off, his little game is up, and you've already seen the lengths he'd go to try to ruin this place." He produces the crude drawing of himself with two severed hands you found beneath the snake's basket in the kitchen two weeks ago.

"I'd like you to go check out Smeed's place and see if you can find Larur there; if not, see if you can track him down elsewhere."

DM Shisumo wrote:
"I'd like you to go check out Smeed's place and see if you can find Larur there; if not, see if you can track him down elsewhere."

"Can't say as yer method of getting this place goin' was the wisest of choices, but ye gotta deal with the coin as it falls, I guess. Larur's done alright by me thusfar, an'I see no reason t'leave him t'the likes o' Smeed - or Zincher, fer that matter." This last is said with a meaningful look at Saul's 'hand'.

"We get Lah-roar back and go break Smeed knees. Um.. Cliff, do me have enough to get new Koth?"

Makoa:

I don't know if you're just staying in character, but in case you missed it:

That's correct.

Saul gives you directions to Smeed's flat on Rat Street in the Leeward District, several blocks to the northeast from the Goblin.

Sorry, robin edited his post and I didn't have a chance to edit mine because I had to rush out of town yesterday. Nevertheless, it doesn't actually change anything - Saul does still tell you where Smeed's place is.

Larur's flat is in the Leeward tenements as well, a single floor of a large house that has been converted into separate housing for a number of tenants. The house is old and ramshackle, badly leaning and covered in grimy, flaking whitewash. When you enter the dilapidated front hall, you see the ground-level door, where Larur lives, closed.

DM Shisumo wrote:

"I'll see to speaking with th'other residents t'see if they seen or heard anything, while ye search Larur's flat," Jugger says as he starts looking for the way up.

There are exterior stairs leading up to the other apartments, I presume?

Finding access to the upper floors, Jugger approaches the closest door and knocks, softly at first.

'Jugger' Thompkins wrote:

There are indeed. They are, in fact, right in front of you, in the entry hall.

'Jugger' Thompkins wrote:

There is no immediate answer.

If Jugger knocks again:

Spoiler:
A muffled voice - an old woman, by the sound of it - shouts "Go away!" through the door.

Anyone approaching Larur's door, Perception (sight-based) DC 15:

Spoiler:
The door is not actually closed. It's off its hinges, and has been pulled into the flat and set up against the doorframe as though it were closed.

If you miss the Perception check and reach to open the door:

Spoiler:
As you grasp the handle and try to push the door open, it suddenly falls in with a massive crash.
