Monk - Slow Fall as a ki power?

We already have (essentially) a jump spell as a ki power (High Jump... and I should say I still like "Leap of the Clouds" as a name for that class ability).

Why not just make Slow Fall into a ki power to use feather fall on yourself as an immediate action? Wouldn't that be a good deal simpler than a scaling slow fall ability? You don't get the ability prior to getting your ki pool anyway.

humm that's a cool ideal really

Taking that a step further, we could just make them both spell-like abilities (CL = monk level) referencing the appropriate spell descriptions, and thereby save a bunch of space in the rulebook!

And a step further than that: imagine turning the ki pool abilities into 4 levels of spells like the paladin and ranger get, except the list would be slanted towards "monk-appropriate" things like the aforementioned jump, feather fall, etc...

There is a certain logic to it. Only the super-grognards like me will remember Iron Crown's Spell Law (the precursor to Rolemaster), wherein monks were precisely that - spellcasters - and had lots of agility spells and the like.

It would brutally murder backwards compatibility for the PF monk, but I don't disagree with the sentiment. It would be an interesting way to go, but I don't think PF is going there.

I see no reason to alter this relatively simple ability. Although I understand the logic of simplifying the rules by incorporating it into the Ki mechanic, I do not feel this is a valuable use of that limited ability.

And... as a note, I do happen to own Spell Law, and I really enjoyed it, but that was a different sort of game. My head still hurts just thinking about it.

I dont think the slow fall would be so bad if it scaled a bit quicker. Maybe 20' or 30' increments each time instead of the 10'? And possibly get the unlimited version a lot sooner?

I was thinking that. Multiply all the slowfall distances by 1.5 or so (30 ft, 45 ft, 60 ft, 75 ft, 100 ft) and then have unlimited slowfall at 14th. Alternatively, have 25 ft at 4th, 50 ft at 6th, 75 ft at 8th, 100 ft at 10th and unlimited at 12th.

Neither of these are vast upgrades, but they are more helpful to the monk.

This might be nice. You get it at 20 feet, so each time it improves have it improve by 20 feet instead of 10.

Not a big change, but one that looks more fun on the character sheet.

I had a momentary notion of being able to use slow fall to glide, but I think that opens up a whole messy can of worms that would be better left closed.

You probably don't want to look at this, then.
