Exotic versus Martian Weapon Proficiency Feats

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Is there any difference between the Exotic and Martial Weapon Proficiency Feats?

Simple Weapon Proficiency grants proficiency for all Simple Weapons. Martial Weapon Proficiency grants proficiency for a single martial weapon and exotic the same for a single exotic weapon.

Since Martial Weapon Prof and Exotic Weapon Prof grant identical benefits why not just one feat to do both?

Weapon Proficiency
Choose a type of martial or exotic weapon. You understand how to use that type of weapon in combat.
Benefit: You make attack rolls with the selected weap-
on normally.
Normal: When using a weapon with which you are not proficient, you take a –4 penalty on attack rolls.
Special: Barbarians, fighters, paladins, and rangers are proficient with all martial weapons. They need only take this feat to gain proficiency with an exotic weapon.
You can gain Weapon Proficiency multiple times. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of weapon.

I guess it's kind of a nit-pick but it seems silly to me to have 2 feats with the same exact benefit.

Exotic Weapon Proficiency has a BAB +1 prerequisite (plus Str 13+ for bastard sword or dwarven waraxe), which limits the characters that can take it at 1st level. Martial Weapon Proficiency has no prerequisites, so any character can take it at 1st level. That's about it.

I personally prefer Weapon Groups from Unearthed Arcana.

Oops didn't pay much attention to the +1 prereq. The STR is an exception whether it's in the EWP or MWP.

It's actually something I've used on occasion to my benefit in 3.5 - I recently made a dwarven bard for PFS who uses a dwarven waraxe; because the waraxe is martial for dwarves rather than exotic, he could take MWP and be able to use the weapon at 1st level.

Similarly, check out Sajan and the temple sword he can't use until 3rd level...

I know it's a typo, but I wanna hear about the thark radium guns.

Yeah, I was hoping for a sweet Planet Stories crossover here. ;)

I know. I was like....."Martian weapons? Woo Hoo!!!" I want a low grav gyrojet crossbow, so when I jump 50 feet in the air, there's no recoil to send me careening into the fanblades of a sky ship from Helium or something.

But where are you supposed to get the Iridium-Q 36 Space Modulator to power them? This is blatant nerfing of Martian Weapons!

It will never work with that. Try the Illudium PU-36 Space Modulator. But your point still stands.
