Back to Barakus - new old-school PBP

Gamer Connection

I'm running a The Lost City of Barakus PBP right now and just realized how much there is to do in this adventure, so being unemployed and with time on my hands, I thought I'd start a new group to tackle some of the urban and wilderness encounters while the other group is exploring the dungeon. Possibly the groups (or characters in them) might even meet or interact.

We're using the Pathfinder rules and the Wilderlands universe. I'm aiming for a slightly gothic feel, so there are no gods to help you (clerics work as usual and miracles do happen, but only out of pure goodness), and I use the taint rules from Heroes of Horror. I'd like to try core races and classes only, since I want to play-test the Pathfinder rules as written. 20 point buy, standard equipment.

You can read the campaign thread Barakus Begins to get a feel for my DM-ing style, if you like. There is no spoiler problem, as long as you can separate character from player knowledge.

I'm looking for five players able to post at least once a day. First come, first served. Welcome, o brave ones.

As a member of 'group 1' I can attest to the fun and quality of this campaign! We have fought, bled, won some, lost some, met strange monsters and stranger people, and had a rip-roarin' good time doin' it. This is the campaign you want to be in for some good old first edition feel Pathfinder goodness.

(Can I get some exp for the plug? :)

Dark Archive

Will you accept an infernally-blooded sorceror? Also any alignment restriction?

Thanks for the plug Otto! Have a hero point (yeah, I'm that cheap). Grond had one coming anyway for taking several for the team.

The infernal bloodline looks interesting. I prefer good characters but neutrals are fine.

Now if Haun is interested we only need one more player to get started.

Dark Archive

Will start drafting.

I would be interested

You're welcome. We'll see if anyone else is interested. Otherwise I'll see what I can whip up for the pair of you.

So I have the Pathfinder Beta thats all I need for this right? (I mean I have like ever 3.5 book there is but, all I have of Pathfinder is the Beta) and I am so glad to be apart of this Thank you cant wait! I just need some details and I'm down!

Yes, you just need the Beta. If you have the Player's Guide to the Wilderlands, that's nice too, but it's not needed. I think you can sneak a peek at WorsT's excellent cartography, too, for a glimpse of the area. You start your adventure in Warwik, a large port city.

If any of you would like to have some kind of a link to anyone in the other party, that would be great, but not necessary. The same rules for character creation apply to you (20 point buy, core classes/races, 1 hero point (or possibly more) at the start, standard gold...

Just ask if anything is unclear.

This is first level right?

I am thinking of a Gnome Bard with a Familiar, if they get one I dont remember, I look if they do I think I might take Improved Familiar, anyway I was wondering if there is anything I should know about skills, I recall something in one of your Discussion Boards, but again I dont remember. Also I have three very silly questions, 1) How do I make my writing blue in game, 2) How do I italic my letters, and 3) how do I use the Dice thingy? I'm sorry this is my first play by post and I am so excited! Thanks!

I also would be interested ?
For character , I would like to avoid a clerci but otherzise I'll wait to see zhat the group would need

Yes, this is first level.

Bards don't have familiars, I'm afraid and Improved Familiar only gets you a better one. I don't mind a bard having a familiar but I'm trying to go strictly by the rules here. Since Radavel is planning a sorcerer, maybe you should go with a druid with an animal companion or a cleric with the animal domain?

If you check out the FAQ above (under Messageboard Questions you can see all the codes used to modify text. Out of character commentary is blue. The dice roller is here. Just follow the instructions.

Robin, you are welcome, too.

Characters for Urban/Wilderness Adventure thus far:

Radavel - Infernally-Blooded Human Sorcerer
Haun - Gnome Bard
robin - any non-cleric

Thanks, and yeah I thought bards didn't get one, so I think I'm going for the good old human Fighter, or Human Barbarian, not sure I'll post late tonight I'm busy today, Take care.

So this is a rough first draft I made in like 2 min while I had a moment but I think this is what I want to play he is a Human Barbarian, and yeah you can read the story and tell me if its okay, I tried to use one of the other characters like you had suggested. If anything is bad or wrong about this tell me and I'll fix it. I log back on later in the night to fix this little short story a bit and make it flow a little more but here you go:

When Edward Brightmores late wife had birthed his first son Brock he could never had known that his son would be all that he hated. Edward was the Owner of a small shipping company on the docks of Warwick. His business had taken off and he had taken to the life of high society deeming that his children would be that like the Noble men’s children, but his first son was anything but, his abnormal size was the first sign to being an outcast, at 15 he was already 6’3 and 250 pounds by his 19th year he had grown to 7’2, This would not have been bad if his son has enjoyed sword play like the other nobles boys, no he had been kicked out of the his saber school for bringing a Great Axe to a saber fight, he also wasn’t the smartest man, he couldn’t read no matter how many tutors tried, and figures, and mapping were all but lost on the poor lout. Edward hated his son, and gave him a job as a loader to keep him out of the way while his other children would be groomed. Brock Brightmore on the other hand loved his life, he loved talking to the sailors on the docks and drinking into the wee hours of the night, and loved to brawl with the fancy folk who he couldn’t stand, just because you had money didn’t mean you were better. He loved seeing there faces as they changed him to gentlemen duels and he brought his Great Axe. In fact the only wealthy person he had come to like was Sandros Highmount. A social outcast like him, an odd duck to be separated from the heard, they got along great! Drinking, and dancing with the ladies, and talking about there foolish families full of money and lust for more power. They were great friends when Sandros suddenly disappeared. A few days later he had heard rumor that Sandros had gone out for adventure, and Brock would be damned if he missed out, he left the day after he heard, to find his own.

Background
Hessiah is the _______ generation descendant of ____________, a ruthless and merciless inquisitor from a great city to the North, who made a pact with the infernal powers for strength to rule behind the scenes. Unfortunately, his ancestor’s rule was ended when a band of adventurers shattered the gleaming gem which was the font of his strength.

The descendants of his ancestor escaped from the great Northern city to settle in relative obscurity in the village of ________________, where generations of ____________ had been hog raisers.

From the day he was born, Hessiah exhibited qualities far from the ordinary. For one, he can speak Infernal. For another, he could work magic.

Hessiah’s parents prevented him from playing with the other children for fear of discovery. Until one day, Hessiah’s parents discovered how easily Hessiah dominated the other children who gladly did anything and everything for him. From then on, Hessiah became the most popular boy in the village.

When he came of age, Hessiah started experiencing his “blood” dreams. The dreams would start with him becoming the ruler of a distant land and end with him murdering his subjects. Disturbed, Hessiah was convinced to leave the village.

This is my character. Note that the background still needs some work. Will appreciate any inputs.

That's two interesting characters there. I wonder how they will get along. I'm opening a thread in the Discussions forum where we can continue this discussion. robin, you are welcome to post your character there, too.

Dark Archive

Hessiah likes to control people. Hence, they will get along... so long as he does Hessiah's bidding.

Liberty's Edge

As a player in Tom's other PBP, I have nothing but envy for those able to play in this game...

Shadow Lodge

Are you still looking for people? I'm insane enough...

Dark Archive

Players thus far:

Me - Infernally-Inspired Sorcerer
Haun - Barbarian
robin - Ranger

Black Tom has said that the IC thread will be posted once there are at least four (4) players.

Oh yeah, you're welcome, especially if you are insane enough to play a cleric, or possibly a druid. In that case you won't even need Beamus, which will make it a lot easier to stitch the background together.
