PFRPG Wizard question

Ok, I am trying to understand this sentence, but could someone please break this down for me? Maybe I am dense, dunno...

Pathfinder wrote:

In addition to these abilities, each school also grants a

number of bonus spells. Whenever a wizard attains the listed
level, he can choose one spell from his school to prepare every
day as a bonus spell. Instead of gaining a spell of the listed
level, the wizard can instead choose a spell of a lower level,
which he can then prepare twice per day (except for 2nd level).
A universalist can choose spells from any school. Once chosen,
these spells cannot be changed.

Thanks!

J~

Honestly, I am feeling very dense right now, could some one who is extremely bored (or helpful) walk me thru the creation of my lvl 1 Necromancer? I am having a hard time understanding the spell system, which as I understand pretty closely follows the 3.5 version, of which it now becomes apparent that I am unaware of.

Ahem. How many spells do I get in my book, and how many per day

See char in description for details. (18 int)

(Meanwhile I will go back to reading how skills are selected)

Well I don't have the Pathfinder rules on me but it sounds like this to me...

1. The PC will be selecting schools of magic for their character.

2. Each school of magic the character has allows bonus spells which are received when they reach a specific level(s).

3. When one of these levels is attained, the bonus spell is one from that school of magic. This bonus spell may be prepared once per day.

4. Normally the bonus spell taken will be of a given level shown on a chart within the Pathfinder book, example: a bonus 3rd level spell.

The last option allows the character to take a bonus spell which may be prepared once per day and exchange it for a lower level spell which can be prepared twice per day.

Example: The character normally receives a 3rd level (insert school of magic here) bonus spell but they replace it with a 2nd or 1st level spell of that school of magic. Because the spell taken is lower level than that normally available, the character may prepare it twice rather than once.

I'm not sure exactly what they mean by "(except for 2nd level)". I'm thinking they mean a bonus spell given at 2nd level. My guess is at 2nd character level they only receives 1st level magic spells which is why they can't receive a lower level spell. Level 1 spells are the lowest spell level in the game.

If they are a universalist they can choose spells from any school.

Once bonus spells are selected, they cannot be changed or replaced with a different spell. The selection is final.

Does this make any sense or is it even more confusing now?
