Scarab Sages

Inspired by the "What movie inspired you" thead.

I was watching Demolition Man last night. Every indication tells me that I REALLY shouldn't like this movie -- the acting, the plot, etc. But for some reason I really like it. I don't get it.

So what movies do you find that you really like even though they should be labeled as bad movies?

1980's Whoopi Goldberg action movies. That's right. Top that!

Jumpin Jack Flash, Burgler, every time they're on TV at like 2 in the morning I can't resist watching them.

It's a sickness.

It's probably the Blob remake from the 80s... But my family's seen it so many times (probably once a year) that I don't think we consider it a guilty pleasure.

Dude. Denis Leary rocks in that one!

Mine are Dean Cameron movies. Sure most people like Chainsaw in "Summer School", but how about "Bad Dreams", "Ski School 1 AND 2", "Rockula" or his amazing sublime turn in the Emilio Estevez/Charlie Sheen vehicle "Men at Work"?!?!?

Scarab Sages

Judge Dread
Ultraviolet
Alien: Resurrection

Those are the first three that come to mind. There are many more.

That's pretty much at the top of my "Guilty Pleasure Movies" list, followed closely by the first two Pokemon Movies and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. To understand that last one, it's not that great a movie, is fairly predictable and in no way matches up to the comic, which I am a huge fan of. Given my track record of not usually liking comic or book adaptations it's actually quite shocking to those around me that I like this movie.

And in reverse, there is a movie that I think I should like, but I just hated.

I even used it as a basis for an adventure in my Gamma World campaign. I may tweak it for Pathfinder.

Ooo, my wife brought up another one. Chronicles of Riddick.

Scarab Sages

A few more of mine that I can't keep from watching, some of which I like better than others though: Bats, Beowulf (w/ Christopher Lambert), Howling V: The rebirth, The Covenant, Lake Placid, Mom and Dad Save the World, Universal Soldier, We Come in Peace (w/ Dolph Lundgren).

Is it bad that I have that movie memorized to the point that I no longer watch it so much as listen for the audial cue of when a scene I think is cool is about to come on? I've even seen all the Bloodsport sequels. All of them. Wow. That is so pathetic.

I can't believe no one mentioned Roadhouse yet.:)

Hudson Hawk. I don't know why, but I think it's funny as hell.

Roadhouse rocks. Tons of good lines.

"Good lines" -- reminds me of The Running Man. "See here Sub-Zero, now just plain Zero."

That's a pretty good one. I have such a weak spot for girlie movies; Romy & Michele's High School Reunion is totally, like, one of my favorite movies ever! Legally Blonde is also really good.

"The Quest" of Van Damme. For my that would have made a much better "street fighters" movie. I believe it was named The Quest... In Mexico the have the nasty habit to change some of the movie titles...

Continue to hate Braveheart, it deserves to be hated.

I have seen most of the classic Godzilla movies from the sixties and seventies. And I enjoy them.

The original Hellboy.

By the numbers, I should've hated that movie. Really really hated it. But I liked it quite a bit.

(Now, if you were to follow this train to the next logical thread, what movie do you really hate, but really should like, the answer is the Dark Knight. I feel like a failure as a geek for not loving that movie.)

You sir, are a gentlemen and a scholar. In the book of over-rated geekery, Braveheart is number one with a bullet.

Anything by Steven Seagal (and yes, that includes Direct-DVD releases).

Anything with Vin Diesel bellowing,"KILL OR BE KILLED!!"

Hey! Hellboy deserves our respect just for beign hellboy!... Sadly you are right. I think the plot for the first movie was better than the second but it was still in diapers

I loved Hellboy. I never read the comics, but for me the movie hit all the right notes: introduce the characters, define the universe, stay internally consistent, keep the story moving, and every now and then give us a little wow.

Plus, of course, I got a ton of ideas for my game, which is always a nice bonus.

Esspecially that flick he did with Kurt Russell where he dies 30 minutes into the film and his name never appears on the credits. I wish I could remember it's name now.

Edit: Executive Decision was the name.

I once wrote a thesis paper about how historically inaccurate that movie is. I could start ranting but I won't. I still consider it the greatest affront to my family ever made. I'm related to Edward I and William Wallace by the way.

Dark Archive

Just remembered. Star Trek I, III, and V.

I loathe the Hellboy movie and I collected all the damn comics.

I is pretty cool. It's not the best, but it was the first, so it automatically gets bumped at least one letter grade.

Yeah, I'm like that too about most of the other comic book movies. Don't even get me started on Jack Nicholson's Joker ;)

Ohhh, I could be here all day. Just quickly:

Conan the Destroyer
Red Sonja
American Ninja
The 80's Allan Quatermain movies starring Richard Chamberlain
Hell, ANTHING from the Golan/Globus stables
The Time Guardian (Australian Sci-Fi trash at it's finest)
Many, Many more.

And yet I have still not seen Hawk The Slayer. I feel ashamed.

Billzabub wrote:

That one's on my list too. Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello singing Swinging on a star and Richard E Grant hamming it up like there's no tommorrow. Priceless.

EDIT: Oh, how could I forget! AvP 2: Requiem. Yes, it's a piece of crap, but I genuinely enjoyed that film.

Blazing Saddles. That movie is wrong on so many levels...but it is hilarious.

If you are going down that road, then I must add Spaceballs and Men in Tights to my list. Also the Planet of the Apes remake.

How can you put a Mel Brooks movie on the bad movie list?

Not, bad, just irreverant. Some of the jokes, like a Druish princess are awefully politically incorrect.

Hehe, classic.

First of all, Starship Troopers is genius, one of the most intelligent (and misunderstood) films made in last 20 years. And the most intelligent and thought-provoking scifi film I have ever seen (yes, I have seen Matrix). The fact that it is also frigging cool comes as an extra.
For the record, I also love 300. And Conan the Barbarian (Conan the Destroyer less so).

What else, what else...would this be the point to mention Lucio Fulci? Dario Argento? Mario Bava?
Russ Meyer films are also great fun.

And almost forgot...Liquid Sky is wonderful film too.

Scary Movie 3 is the best one of the three Scary Movies I have seen, and has plenty of funny moments.
