Penny-Arcade 4E Podcasts

4th Edition

I've been listening to these podcasts over and over again at work and I love them. They're HILARIOUS!

Does anyone know of any other funny DnD podcasts similar to this? It's great listening to people play like this. Although it does get me some interesting looks from co-workers when I start cracking up at my desk for no apparent reason. It doesn't matter whether they're 4E or not, I'm just looking for something to keep my entertained and awake during work.

Chow!

Fear the Boot has long been my favorite gaming podcast, primarily because of their humor. But everyone likes different stuff (I am not big on the Penny-Arcade stuff).

Here are a list of gaming podcasts that I currently listen to:

Accidental Survivors (modern gaming)

The Basics of the Game (just started listening... juries still out)

Bear Swarm (There was some references with them and Paizo so I figured I would try it out... haven't actually listened yet)

Dark Whispers (for Nick Logue's company... but there has been only one actual podcast... wasn't bad though)

Dragon's Landing (I think the is the most popular of the gaming podcast by subscriber... not bad)

Fear the Boot (Best gaming podcast IMHO)

Radio Free Homlett (probably my favorite 4E podcast... but there hasn't really been much compitition)

Sons of Kryos (not a bad show at all)

Yog-Sothoth (Cthulhu based podcast from England)

Anyone have others they recommend?

Secret Life of Girl Gamers has some excellent material for story based gaming.

Theory from the Closet is interesting but very hit or miss.

Wow, these should keep me busy for weeks to come. Thanks everyone!

Where do you find these excellent podcasts?
I have already heard the Penny Arcade stuff... but cannot find the others you mention.

Maybe this is like blogs and I'm just dreadfully behind the times, but I just don't get the whole "podcast" thing.

These are basically like radio broadcasts, encoded for play on a digital device, be it iPod (where I assume the "pod" comes from?) or computer, right?

Do you play these on your computer at work? Listen to them on your car? I just can't seem to get into any podcasts. Am I doing it wrong?

Yes, David. You are doing it horribly wrong. This is why you have antenna on your face./end sarcasm

Their a lot of audio books or radio readers. You listen to them as background noise such as in the car or on a train or plane.

Basically its like watching someone else play a video game.

I have antenna 'cause the ladies love 'em. They broadcast sexy waves right into their brains. :P

Thanks for the post though, I'll consider trying some of these out.

Hehe. You so much fun to tease. Did you get that third kidney yet? j/k

I believe my agreement re: that kidney was based around Eberron's eventual release. So the earliest I can probably expect is around July '09. I won't forget though. Oh no. ;)

Nah, you're not alone. For me, personally, I much prefer written content since I can control the pace at which I read - I can skim ahead, set it aside for a moment and then easily jump back in, and so forth. With a podcast, I feel it needs my full attention, and often for a large chunk of time - and I can't really quickly browse through it for whatever might be of interest.

Which is a shame, because there are a lot of quality podcasts out there!

But, unfortunately, they just aren't for me.

As you seem to surmise. These are really good to play in the background when your doing something else.

I definately would not listen to podcasts if I didn't have anything else to do. I've tried it before and my attention wandered.

However, as I am currently working a standard desk job, they're great to listen to on my Gigabeat while I'm typing, etc. Great background noise to keep your brain perked up during repetitive tasks. It definately helps my work.

I didn't see anyone reply earlier to how you actually get these.

The good news is that they are free, though I have found that having invested some cash in an iPod and some accessories has been a very good investment for me (though not necessary) more on that to come.

The first thing you need is to download the episodes. In most cases you could go through the list above, go to their website and download them all as individual MP3s. While this works, it isn't really optimal.

Optimally you will be using what is called a Podcatcher. A podcatcher allows you to subscribe to a feed for any given podcast (a single location they put their episodes, the podcatcher checks this location on a regular basis and autodownloads any new content).

I personally use iTunes but there are a lot of options out there (iTunes works seemlessly with my iPod but if you aren't using one there would be less incentive; the iTunes store is nice as well). If you are using a mobile MP3 player most will have a program they work with and will include a podcatcher, if that is the case it is probably easiest to use what works with your MP3 Player. Otherwise I would do a search on google for Podcatcher and try a few out then make a choice.

Once you have a Podcatcher then you need to subscribe to some Podcasts. If you have a list, like the one I provided above, then you can do a search on each one in a search engine like google and typically on their front page you will be able to get the feed location (often there are buttons you can hit to auto subscribe you depending on the Podcatcher you use... iTunes is almost always there).

That said, it is more interesting to use a podcast site to let you know what of the thousands and thousands of podcasts out there might work for you. The iTunes store has a podcast section (all free) that is integrated in and has a description and rating for each podcast... you just search by topic and go the podcast section (I personally listen to RPG, History, Science and Skepticism... but ANY hobby will have stuff... there is even podcasts of music to set pace for a run). I know there are other sites for searching as well, Podcast Pickle comes to mind. I haven't used these much but my understanding is that they are similar.

Note: No podcast search has ALL podcasts. There is no regulations on them and therefor no common place that they all must use. Because of this you might want to occasionally search a site or even just the web for podcasts that aren't on your favorite search site.

Anyway... that is about all you need to actually play the podcasts. However, I personally have found two other devices: My iPod and my iTrip have helped immensly in my enjoyment of podcasts. The iPod is nice for when I do my daily excercise or chores in and around the house or just anything repetitive that I am doing that I would enjoy listening to music or talk during. The iTrip hooks up to my iPod and broadcasts it over an FM station. This lets me listen to my iPod during my hour long commutes. Throw in that if I am at home at my computer I can listen to them there as well and I have a lot of places I listen (and as a result a fairly large list of Podcasts I listen to as well as a fairly big music collection).

This is by no means a standard, but when choosing a podcast I search by category, look at the overall rating and if not too low I subscribe. I download the first three episodes of a show and commit to listening to all three before making up my mind to stick with a show. They are not all equal and there is no pressure other than someones own time that determines which stay and which go. So, a long running podcast is not necessarily an indication of quality (though often the good ones get a lot of fans and their own messageboards and this drives them to go longer). So caveat emptor... 'cept their free...

Anyway... that is about it. If anyone has any other RPG related podcasts they listen to and enjoy please share so I can check them out!!!

Thanks Sean, for actually answering my query :-)

I have found and listened to Radio Free Homlett and Fear the Boot so far.
Both were good fun. It's great that some people care to do the work these productions must entail. I recommend both podcasts to anyone interrested in D&D.

One other way to find RPG podcasts is ENWorld. Some poor guy puts together a post every week that lists the latest gaming or gamer related podcasts. ENWorld usually puts a direct link to the post on their front page late Thursday or some time Friday. He also posts them to his blog:
