Please introduce yourselves to one another here. It'd be great if you could provide an idea of what your character's goals are, and how you came to live in, or pass through, eastern Ursalav.

Female Human (Taldan) Fighter 2

Hello all. Kara here hails from Lastwall most recently, having volunteered for a recruitment mission headed this way, but mainly came because she took an interest in the history of Lastwall, and their fight against the Whispering Tyrant. Having heard that Ustalav is supposedly where he originated, she has journeyed through the nation seeking information, perhaps to help with what remains of his monsters, and occasionally sending people on to the Wall. Carrion Hill is her eastern stopping point for now.

At heart, she seeks to use her skills to do good: fight monsters, save people, all that. She has tarried longer than necessary in Carrion Hill due to the rumors of disappearing children, and the equally odd rumors of children that suddenly appear to families. Feeling that something is out of place, she has determined to find the source of these occurrences, local superstition notwithstanding.

She will eagerly ally herself with any who are likeminded, and those who will help her. She has a distaste for mercenaries, as they remind her of the self-centered upper classes of her home of Taldor, but as long as they support good causes, she will not complain...too much.

Well met!

Hey Guys I will be making a female sorceress with the abysaal bloodline, I am awaiting my campaign book in the mail so as soon as I get I I will post more, I will have a full character write up soon)I am also on vacation for the 1st 3 weeks of september I will post spradically during these 3 weeks but I will leave Chris a detailed list of instructions of what to do. When I am back home I will post very often at least 1/day! HAPPY ADVENTURING!

Female Human of Tian Xia decent (Sorcerer Favored Class) Barbarian 1; Sorcerer 1 (Draconic bloodline)

Larcifer here will be working on Sachiko as my Avatar for Chris's Game She will mainly be a sorceress, but a hand to hand melee sorceress. We will see how it works....

Male Human (Varisian) Diviner 1

Zosimus is from the Furrows, and blames the Barstoi for all the woes that resulted in the creation of that unpleasant place. He's kicked around most of Ustalav and made occasional forays to Lastwall and the River Kingdoms, following the will of the deck.

Carrion Hill's been a touchstone in Ustalav for him; he tends to return there, particularly after a sojurn outside of his native land. The last trip, into Lastwall, ended about six months ago, and since then he's been doing readings and honing his magic.

His goals are to redeem his ruined land, take revenge on the Borstoi for the harm inflicted on it and its people, and follow Desna's course for his life as revealed in the Harrow deck. To that end he does frequent readings for himself, using the results to guide his decisions. Right now, though, he'd like to put some silver in his pocket and polish his magical skills, something he's smart enough to know he'll need to do if he's ever going to get revenge.

Female Human of Tian Xia decent (Sorcerer Favored Class) Barbarian 1; Sorcerer 1 (Draconic bloodline)

Hey Chris Larcifer here. A couple of questions.
1) what resources for spells are we using are we limited to just Pathfinder, or are all sources open?

2) As for my concept I want to be a girl who works for Madam Silk as one of her entertainers, she is new, she was purchased from the far east for very cheap, Madam Silk thought it was a blessing to get such a beauty for such few coins. Alas, if its too good to be true it usually is. Sachiko is possesed by an ancient eastern spirit that will manifest in 2 ways.

A) Sachiko will start off as a Barbarian at level 1 and when she flies into a rage it will be the demon taking control
B) Level 2 and beyond she will take the Abyssal Bloodline as a sorceress. thus the possesion will manifest that way.

As for Sachiko, she is a CG in alignment and it is a bit ironic because she values freedom but has never had it. First her village shunned her due to the evil portant she was born under. Sold into slavery at a young age to an imperial family of Tian did not help. Her temper and possesion caused many problems. Subsequently she was once again sold to a slaver's ship and shipped off to the north far away from Tian as possible to hide her shame from her homland. She found herself sold at a flesh market to a woman named Mistress Silk and has just started as a serving girl/dancer at Madam Silk's Lotus Petal Emporiumn. vey soon Mistress Silk finds Sachiko and her exotic beauty to be more problematic than her worth. Customers complain when punched in the face after attempting to have an extra pinch here and there. Madam Silk has made Sachiko an offer; pay her back twice the amount of gold it took to purchace her and then she can be free. Sachiko has agreed to this and adventuring seems a better place to make some gold as opposed to peddeling her flesh.

Sachiko tries to control her anger and she often hears a voice urgeing her to go into a rage, she fights this off as much as possible, but often succumbs to the voice's temptations. Even with her semi-freedom, she still battles the voice and herself to be in complete control of her own fate.

Is this an ok concept for your game? Awaiting approval Mechanic wise 1st level Barbarian Human (fav class Sorcerer) will multiclass into a sorcerer at level 2 abyssal bloodline.

Once I get my Gazeteer I will add flavor and finish my character based on the reading you have allowed, can I read Tian as well and have access to feats (I have no idea what feats if any are available so it may be a moot point)

Thanks for having me here, Chris!

So, as I read it we have:
Ranger
Barbarian
Paladin
Fighter

and

Conjuror
Diviner
Druid
Barbarian (future levels as Sorcerer)

We're short on cleric and rogue. I can do either, though I'm leaning towards cleric (to try out the channel energy). But I can go either way. Which would yall prefer? (I know the usual answer is 'go for what I want', but both would be fun. It's the beta! In Golarion!)

My local store doesn't have the world book yet, so I don't either. I'll check the SRD for those traits.

Cleric? Or Rogue?

Scarab Sages

Good Evening, I am Deserach an Osirian Conjurer of Kehlish descent. I am a good ways north of my homeland which suits me just fine, as my primary goals are to discover new mysteries and explore new lands, all the while chronicling our adventures for future publication.

character is fully complete in profile, I do have one question about the point blank shot feet in the Pathfinder Beta release, would I get the bonus of the feat when using my level 1 conjurer special ability? I believe it works with rays so it seems like it should work with this as well.

The text of the Pathfinder "Point Blank Shot" is "You get a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls with ranged weapons at ranges of up to 30 feet." Your 1st-Level Conjuration ability (and rays) are both ranged touch attacks, which are different. So, my call is "no".

(But I'd agree; if rays were included, the acid dart certainly should be, as well.)

Well, really, you don't have to choose either. If everybody wanted to play an arcane spellcaster, that would have been okay. I would have presented story hooks and challenges appropriate to a party of mages.

A choice of class is a vote for what kind of stories you want us to tell.

Which isn't to say that a well-rounded party isn't a good thing. It's just not as necessary a thing as it would be in an unmodified pre-written module.

Agreed. My question was mostly to see which way the others wanted to go. But I think it's to late- I'm really starting to feel a strong Calling.

I'm off to consult the Beta.

Good question. Several spells from the 3.5 PH have been altered in Beta, usually decreasing in potency. (For example, see Grease.) For right now, stick to (a) Pathfinder, and (b) spells in the 3.5 Player's Handbook or Paizo products which have not been altered in the Beta rules.

If there's a particular spell you're interested in, we can discuss how it fits into the Pathfinder philosophy.

That's fantastic, Larcifer! If it fits in with your character concept, I'd like the spirit to have been given to you at birth as a clan ritual. Perhaps it was intended as benign, or perhaps housing the spirit is a family responsibility.

But you and the spirit have an accord: it doesn't try to "take control" at normal times; you have to give it leave, perhaps with a particular word or phrase. And in turn, you yield control when you feel doing so suits both your needs.

Sachiko wrote:

That's okay, but does that imply that the possessing spirit is evil? Would an elemental or fey bloodline match the spirit's personality better?

Or, would you be interested in the Sha'ir class from Dragon Compendium? That character has an elemental servant spirit that runs off and finds spells for the caster.

Whatever you decide, it sounds like a fun character concept.

Oh, and correct me if I'm wrong, but Tian Xia is closer to being an analogue of China than Japan, yes?

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Nerd 5/Expert 1

If I'm correct, Tian Xia operates as the analogue for China(through the former states of Lung Wa), Japan(through Minkai), and Korea(through Xa Hoi). Seems to be a big place.

Point noted: for equipment, your characters have 3/4 maximum starting gold for their class. (see Beta, pg. 98)

Deserach wrote:

Help me out, Deserach. Where does the "rich parents" trait come from?

Scarab Sages

1st column, 2nd trait from the second Darkness Players guide page 14. Personally I think the trait might be a bit unbalanced, I have no problem giving it up if you think so as well.

And in regards to the Point Blank Shot I think I was getting it confused with Weapon Focus: Rays. So I assume then that since Point Blank shot does not work with rays then neither would Precise shot. In which case I will probably select another feat.

Sachiko wants the claws and the benefits to strength that come with the abyssal bloodline; I will say the spirit is a ancestral one who was corrupted by a demon and its Sachiko's responsibility to house this ancestor and find a way for redemption.

Its quite funny if we look at the marvel universe we have:

Gambit--Our Harrower diviner and now wolverine/lady death strike in Sachiko just a funny observation....

There are a few spells that interest me they are:
Critical Strike; Expeditious Retreat(Swift); Blades of Fire;
All are in the Spell Compediumn
I assume they (Critical Strike and Blades of Fire) can work on the claws I will get at level 2...

Oh I just got my Campaign setting PDF (nothing much on Tian Xa so no feat issues there) there are some interesting things I want to try.

1) Sorceror ability replacement
Hidden Reserve [pg. 50] I see this a better fit with Sachiko also the Fatigue will help in my Roleplaying with the struggle with controlling my Family Ancestor (demon)

2)Can I take a feat later that is identical to "Hamatulatsu" on page 83 Campaign setting. However I would like to change the back flavour maybe I was taught this by Monks back in Tian before being sold into slavery.... (This is not too important for me but with the use my claws it is a very cool mechanic)

Hey Larcifer,
re: Sachiko,

I noticed you asking if your Character could read Tian,
but Barbarians are explicitly supposed to be illiterate in ALL languages... Anyway, it didn't really sound to me like your character background was so much a Barbarian Warrioress, but more like a Rogue...

It sounds like you have a pretty good image of how she goes into bizarre "Rages" with in-Human strength, but another option you could take (if Chris goes along with it) would be to replace the Rogue's Sneak Attack ability with the Rage ability - You would gain Rage Points/Powers (along with Rogue Powers/Feats) if your Rogue level rises, you would just never get Sneak Attack dice. You'd also get the Rogue's better class skills, lots of skill points, and you can READ & WRITE :-) (plus the fatigue after Rage thing)

I hope that was at least a little helpful...

And watch out for that 6' Barbarian chick in the bar, OK? I heard she's trouble. :-)

EDIT: I noticed the Hidden Reserve Feat... It's just that it's supposed to only be available to the Dragon trained Sorcerors of Hermea... But for your character background, when you become a Sorceress, I could see some type of 'spirit' familiar (think Princess Mononoke) appearing who's mission it is to help you rescue the spirit of your ancestor, and can also explain some of your awakening powers to you... Like? :-)

Male Half-Orc Druid 2nd

Hey der, I'm Martaug. I came from da Hold of Belkzen when I was a little one, but my clan got killed off. I ran all the way down into the Fangwood and met my teacher in da magic of da living world dere. After he taught me as his apprentice, he sent me out here to watch out for a disturbance in the Balance dat da Circle was feelin'.

I live in one of da outlying farms, helpin' with neighbors animals an' such, an' I've been settin' up skeps for my bees and da honey trade. I've been in town about two years now, so some of ya may know me.

Oh, an' if ya know me, ya know dat I've got a huge facination with bugs of all types. I obviously love bees, but I also like centipedes, spiders, ants, and beetles. I can watch 'em all day.

Quandry, I ment could I "read" the entry for Tian Xa and use it as in game knowledge and have access to any Tian feats if they are available...(I di nto have my PDF at the time) Hence there are no feats and Tian is not explicitally detailed in this supplement. There is information. I have no issues with being illiterate, I can spend a skill point to read common. I am good with the Barbarian. The rage HitDice and 10ft of Mvt work well for this build I am exploring. I do like some of the ideas you have suggested. Thanks for the intrest and suggestions. Do people she this characte rbeing problematic?

I could switch my human race so I can get the magical reserve option, but I was thinking the same lines as you were Quandry that my family ancestor(s) are both good and bad hence the abyssal heritage but it being under control. I like the asian--ancestor feel I am going towards. I am reading the entrys Chris wants us to read and I could change my background to fit this region more ethnically its funny because in real life I am Hungarian/Romanian so the folk lore of my family meshes quite well with the flavour of this campaign.

Female Kellid Human Whirling Frenzy Wolf-Totem Barbarian 2 (Favored)

All about Yalka
Yalka recently decided to leave her tribe. Since her father Kross' death from old age, it had settled down more & more, till it's chief pre-occupation seemed to be the gossip about if the Chief's companion Narza would take revenge on the blatant attempts by Sheetha the Half-Orc to win over her man's attentions.

She remembered when it had not been this way, when her father was the tribe's greatest warrior, leading it's warband in campaigns from the Land of the Mammoth Lords to the Demon Wastes, battles which the Story-Chanters are still embellishing. Her mother, Lapatia, seemed to have felt the same as Yalka. Before disappearing mysteriously a month ago, she told Yalka, "Remember, you have the power of Dragons in you." She also left Yalka her precious Amber necklace, with a pendant carved in the shape of a dragon, that her father had said her mother brought with her when she first came from the Island of Hermea, before Yalka was born.

Her father and mother had been a fiery duo: the Story-Chanters recount her mother's heroics and mysterious powers almost as much as her father's... Although Yalka could never quite distinguish fact from "emphasis" in the Chants, and her mother never shared much about her powers or where she came from, always saying "it's beyond the Great Sea, beyond the Northlands, the land of your tribe." Besides the language she shared with her mother, another difference about her mother was that she seemed to not suffer the passage of time, certainly not as much as her father. Indeed, other warriors sought her mother's companionship after the passage of her father, but she was never interested.

Finally, deciding that she needed to roam free once again, Yalka subtlely tied off loose ends, and prepared to ride where the wind took her. She had certainly seen much of the Northlands when her father still lived and the tribe roamed the land. It would be nice to see the Great Lake, Encarthan, or the Giant Beasts of the Mammoth Lords, once again. All she knows is that the Story-Chanters chant tales of action and heroes, mysteries and epic battles, not crying babies and bickering wives.

By the chances of Fate, Sheetha the Half-Orc came across her as she was readying to leave, making the sign for Farewell in a pattern of rocks where her bed had been. Not being able to deny her departure, she shared her (minimal) plans, and was surprised when Sheetha appeared inspired, and asked if she could join and come along. Mostly not knowing what else to say, she agreed, and Sheetha quickly gathered her belongings onto another horse, and the two rode off.

Male Dwarf Ranger 2

Hello to the lot of ya, and well met!

Grumblenaught, while not a Carrion Hill native is now somewhat of a local fixture, especially to the long-toiling freesteaders who eke out their meagre living on the eastern foothills of the Hungry Mountains. For the last several years, the stout dwarf has lived among them, trading animal pelts, fresh meat and honest labor for the occasional dry roof over his head, the company of decent folk and any news of Ogre activity that the subsistence famers may have gleaned.

His mammoth crossbow (well-maintained and quite fully functional, despite its positively archaic appearance) and stout boar spear have seen use defending more than one farmstead from wolves, bears and - the fortunately rare - hunching, moaning things that descend from the darkling clefts and caves of the craggy mountains.

The young dwarf, while blunt and honest in his speech, dances more agilely than one might expect around matters of his past and his family, though he has more than once inferred that his mother and infant brother both suffered sudden and violent ends.

To those familiar with dwarven culture, the scattering of bone-beaded war braids in his coal black beard tell a tale of an outcast, impoverished clan and a shattered family, while the painstakingly carved oath-runes binding the braids promise honor to expunge shame, and blood to repay violence.

Chris, you said we could take two from:
-a SRD trait
-a trait from the "Second Darkness" Player's Guide
-a +1 to a saving throw.

Unfortunately my local game store does not yet have the Player's Guide (or the Golarion world book either) so I haven't seen the traits.
Is it possible there is a trait that would add a skill based on my background to my class skills? I realize that this can be done (at least in effect) by taking the Skill Focus feat, but I'm wondering if a trait might do it better.

Speaking of skills, I have a question about another aspect of the character. I intend to play a cleric of Gozreh, with the Plant and Weather Domains. (I'll go over the character story later) Under 3.5, I would have been able to add K(Nature) to my class skills as a Domain ability, but the Pathfinder Domains are different. As a priest of a weather diety, I would like to be able to predict the weather without resorting to a cross class skill. Perhaps a GM ruling or a trait could be used here?

Also, a question relating to local superstions. Is there some physical sign or trait a new born would have which would result in the child being abandoned in the wilderness? I'm not thinking about an odd race or anything, just looking for something that would add local ties. Something folklore-ish like blue eyes in Tekumel or an unusual birthmark or certain fingers being longer. It could even be a trait from elsewhere if the parents were traveling. Maybe a Shoanti wouldn't keep a child born with a birthmark of (???) over his heart because tribal lore warns that such a child brings disaster. I can come up with something on my own, but if there's something in the local or world lore that would be better.

Thanks.

I'm not sure it's overbalanced, but it's odd. It gives characters a large boost over their fellow party members at the beginning of the campaign. (Starting with, practically, 2nd Level equipment) but evaporates by the end of 1st Level.

I appreciate how you (and Quandary, who's barbarian also has rich parents) haven't tried to abuse it with a whole mess of scrolls, or masterwork armor, or such. Given that the trait is available to everyone else, too, I'll allow it.

I also appreciate how you refer to book names and page numbers.

A note, by the way, regarding scrolls: the ink you use for scribing them is dimly magic itself, made through an extensive process and requiring a few exotic monster parts. Regular sepia ink wouldn't work for scribing spell-holding scrolls. Generally speaking, the proper eldritch materials for scrolls (and potion brewing) are available in most cities, so there's rarely a problem.

I'll have to double-check my Spell Compendium, but for right now, let's operate under the assumptions that:

a) Yes, you're corrupt ancestral spirit can make them known to your mind, but they are unheard of in these lands.
b) You can know a version of blades of fire that works with manufactured weapons, or a version called claws of fire that works with natural weaponry.

Well, Hidden Reserve is an ability that takes the place of a familiar (or, in Beta terms, an arcane bond). The abyssal bloodline doesn't have an arcane bond, so Hidden Reserve isn't something Sachiko can have.

Having said that, I'd be disinclined to allow Hidden Reserve anyway. It's an incomplete description. A character is exhausted or fatigued for how long? (Five minutes? Until she succeeds at an hourly DC 15 Fortitude check?) In your case, can an exhausted character tap into a barbarian's rage?

Yes, on the feat, no on the Tian monks. If you want to learn this martial art, you'll need to study it under the Devil Nuns of Isgir. (Perhaps you were sold to them at some point?) There's a notoriety to the fighting style for those who recognize it.

Chris will not go along with it. As you note, the Beta rules tie a lot of the barbarian's powers into his rage. A rogue who could rage instead of sneak attack would be more powerful than either a rogue or a barbarian.

The base Pathfinder classes are cool enough.

Being able to predict the weather with an Intelligence check (DC 13) is a perfectly reasonable trait.

Thanks to the influence of the Whispering Tyrant over the centuries, the dead lie restless in Ustalav. A woman who dies in childbirth often returns as a banshee, keening in her grief to hold her child in her ephemeral arms, and killing lots of folks till she's laid to rest.

The children of women who die in childbirth are often abandonned to the wilds, a practice ephemistically referred to as bringing the child to see his mother.

Less often, rural folks throughout the Inner Sea region will abandon any babes that have noticable birth defects, or appear to be the product of interspecies romance.

Female Half-Elf Paladin of Iomedae

History:
Valdisara’s origin is shrouded in mystery, at least for the time being. She knows not her surname, and indeed has chosen not to adopt one. What she does know is primarily what is obvious to others: she was born perhaps some twenty years ago of mixed heritage, and strongly favors her elven ancestor(s). With fair skin, platinum-blonde hair and moss green eyes, her striking good looks are “marred” only by the strange birthmark that stretches from above her left brow to her jaw. Some say it marks her as blessed, some the opposite, but all note its striking similarity to a blade.

Growing up in the temple in Vigil, Val’s youth was spent in rigorous martial training and immersion in Iomedae’s teachings. Initially she was given no explanation for how she came to be reared there, although there were whispers she was orphaned as an infant and found by a member of the faith. Only recently did she discover she was in fact abandoned with the temple due to the symbol on her face, which, in a note found with the newly-born girl, supposedly marked her soul for the goddess’s work.

The unsigned note, given to her upon completion of her initiate’s training by her long-time mentor and surrogate father, Elidan Vrammyr, is the only link the young woman has to her birth family. Since then, she has struck out from Vigil on simultaneous quests: to do her life’s work in the service of the goddess and to find her family. The latter has brought her to the town of Carrion Hill.

Personality:
Valdisara had a sheltered upbringing within the confines of the church, and can be very black-and-white in her interpretation of the world around her. Her brief travels from Vigil to some of the surrounding towns and cities have broadened her outlook somewhat, but only just. Although attractive to others and at heart a warm person, the teasing and sometimes bullying she took from certain initiates in the temple due to her mixed blood and “deformity” on her face has made her suspicious of others and hesitant to take friends.

Thanks, Chris. That's more than enough to run with. I'll be able to get the main build done, but I'll wait on the final tweaks until I see the Golarion book. My local store expects it on the next shipment. (typically on Thursday or Friday) That should still have me done by Sunday.

Male Dwarf Ranger 2

Chris, a quick clarification: Will Grumble be allowed to pick up the Crossbow Mastery feat (CotCT Player's Guide, p10), after he gets the pre-reqs lined up?

My idea for the stumpy little fella was to aim (no pun intended) for something along the lines of a Cragtop Archer (Races of Stone, p101) type of skirmisher/ranged damage-dealer/ogre-hunter, due to his un-dwarfish affinity for high, craggy places and enduring, tooth-gnashing hatred of ogres.

I certainly don't need the actual PrC to do so, but will be selecting feats and skills etc. to follow the concept, as Grumble progresses both in and out of character.

Edit: Also, I don't have the PFCS, so am limited to the Gazetteer at the moment - looking at the map therein, is it safe to assume the weather in Ustalav is a close equivalent to say... New England/Canada?

I bought Grumble's equipment for a cold, snowy environment so if it is much different (for better or worse,) please let me know and I'll adjust accordingly.

How much does the ink cost, or should we assume that the material cost for writing scrolls is the cost of the ink, for instance a 1st level spell at 1st level caster level is 12.5 gp in materials, is that 12.5 gp in eldritch ink?

Thanks Chris to your prompt replies! Hey everyone it looks like we are going to have some really neat characters!!

Chris you are on the same page as I. Having the ancestral spirit passed down through the family tree to a chosen one from generation to generation is exactly what I envisioned!

Thanks for the access to the spells I will have the variant "Claws" of fire!

I am cool without the hidden reserve, no issues here!

Ok I will take Hamatulatsu--I will write it up in Sachiko's final background, Maybe these nuns can be a reoccuring villian who are trying to hunt down and reclaim their "lost wayward daughter" Maybe extracting the evil spirit from Sachiko is a goal of their's as they have a use for the spirit themselves???? Also the notoriety of the fighting style can be fun. I can see it now EVERY citizen of this town will be spitting 3 times after I walk buy them LOL!!! How much does the ink cost, or should we assume that the material cost for writing scrolls is the cost of the ink, for instance a 1st level spell at 1st level caster level is 12.5 gp in materials, is that 12.5 gp in eldritch ink?

Yes, almost entirely. It's nice to have quality vellum, but you could write a scroll text on any surface as smooth as a door if you had the right ink.

Chris, a quick clarification: Will Grumble be allowed to pick up the Crossbow Mastery feat (CotCT Player's Guide, p10), after he gets the pre-reqs lined up?

Sure. And if you're interested in pursuing the Cragtop Archer track, we can talk.

Is it safe to assume the weather in Ustalav is a close equivalent to say... New England/Canada?

It's closer to the Ukraine, with Lake Encarthan substituting for the Black Sea. Annual average temperatures in the plains for Abadius and Erastus are -3.5 degrees C (25 degrees F) and 23.5 deg. C (75 deg. F)(correspondingly. Rainfall varies from 450 mm and more to less than 300 mm year-by-year. On average, there are 195 sunny days in a year.

The peaks of the Hungry Mountains are colder, with temperatures in Abadius averaging -10.5 deg. C (around 13 deg. F),and temperatures rarely rising above 10 deg. C (50 deg. F) in the summer. They're also drier, but sunnier.

The caves in the mountains stay a steady 5 deg. C (41 deg. F) year-round.

Oh and one more question;

Do we get the favored class bonus skill and HP when taking our first level in that class (at 1st level)?

Hmmm, so if I masterworked my stuff out, using the Rich Parents thing, does that mean I need to change it? I have some other ideas about traits to use.

It's one skill point or hit point, but yes.

I believe that the only character who's not starting in her favored class is Sachiko.

Speaking of hit points, please use the racial hit points option on the side bar: Beta, page 14.

(In other circumstances, I'm not a fan of "making 1st Level easy". But it's more of a hassle to whip up a replacement character in this environment, and I'm willing to give you folks a cushion in a system playtest.)

And speaking of replacement characters, I'm not considering "Paizo-level deadly" to be a feature of the milieu; non-optimized characters should do all right here. But, in case ill fortune befalls you, you should consider what kind of "back-up PC" you'd like to play.

(Laughs) So, we have at least three characters from rich parents?

No, it should be fine, Wandslinger.

No problem, there's a whole lot of new ground to stomp all over.

Hey guys just so you all know September 1st to Sept 21st I will be on Vacation. I am going to Berlin--Prauge--Vienna--Bratislava--Budepest and I hope into Romania to see the transylvania area!! Its pretty cool since this region is similar to the one we will be playing in! My family roots are from Hungary and Romania so I am excited for this!!! I will post as often as I can, but I assume it will not be once per day. As the time draws near I will contact you Chris for instructions on DMPCing Sachiko when needed to keep the game going smoothly. Her charater sheet will be done by Sunday/Monday!!!

*cough* Perhaps some have merely chosen to join the party in hopes of finding an even bigger score with this crew of bulging purses?

:D

Hey Larcifer, sounds cool & have fun! (remember to carry garlic & a wooden stake ;-)

It looks like quite a group coming together...

BTW, Chris, how is Yalka's Profile?
Like you said, I don't think I took advantage of the Rich Parents trait:
I have 'nice' Barbarian clothes, amber jewelry, a horse, nice weapons, but I also spent a chunk on a Healing Kit & MW Bower tools, which aren't too game-balance shattering... (Potions cost the same)
She feels like the daughter of her tribe's leading warrior, to me.

Hey Chris,
Is it my understanding that I cannot take Hamatulatsu until level 5 due to the prerequisite of needing 5 ranks in intimidate? Or was this done before the beta therefore its the 3.5 skill system hence I can get it at level 2 thus making it similar to a prestige class skill. It is very confusing because 3.5 and Beta are different skill wise. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Beta wrote:

Designer Notes: Prestige Skills pg. 53

With the changes to the skill system, the requirements to enter various prestige classes must change as well. Whenever a prestige class calls for a number of skill ranks, you can qualify for the prestige class if you meet that number of ranks –3 if you also have the skill as a class skill. If you do not have the skill as a class skill, you must possess double that number of ranks. For example, a 3.5 prestige class might require eight ranks in Move Silently. In the Pathfinder RPG, it instead requires five ranks of the Stealth skill if Stealth is one of your class skills and ten ranks if it is not.

It looks like you can take it at 2nd level, if you get a Feat at 2nd level :-)

Scarab Sages

Along those same lines, it is never too early to start planning for your prestige class, as I see it currently for pathfinder exclusive prestige classes we only have the 5 in the campaign setting. I presume like all non-PFBeta crunchy bits they would be looked at on a case by case basis. The only prestige class that I am currently interested in is the Master Specialist class from the Complete Mage page 70. No big deal either way.

Looking forward to getting started. I will be away all day tomorrow, have a 14 hour drive ahead of me, will check in late.

Can I take a feat that I do not have the rquirements for but not be able to use said feat until I meet the requirements
OR
Can I keep the feat spot blank, meet the requirements and then use the "saved" feat from level 1 to use at level 2 when the requirements are met????

Just a note, Deserach. Being a member of the Pathfinder Society is not exactly illegal in Ursalav, but the organization makes a name for itself by breaking pretty strict social taboos. In fact, if you become known as somebody who goes rooting around in Places Sane People Don't Normally Go, breaking open sealed tombs and trying to bring whatever Heaven-forsaken things you find into town, you should expect a cool reception.

And we all know what happens to people who get a cool reception in Carrion Hill. Well, actually, we don't know what happens to them; that's really the issue, isn't it?

I'm going to take some time over the weekend to look carefully over all the characters, but at a first glance, it looks good. Two longspears sounds like a choreographically impressive fighting style.

Ooooh, I'm envious. Have a fantastic time.

September 1st is just a bit after the time I'd like to get the campaign started, Larcifer. I'd be inclined to keep Sachiko in town, (relatively) out of harm's way, until you get back, and then bring her into the action after your return.

Neither, I'm afraid. Yor character can take a feat as soon as she has (a) met all the prerequisites, and then (b) gained a level with an appropriate open feat slot.

So you may have to wait till 3rd Level to take a feat for which your character would have met all the prerequisites at 2nd Level.

Sounds good to me, boss! One of the PrC prereqs is a non PFRPG feat called "Mountain Warrior" (also from Races of Stone) - I was thinking that perhaps the Class Feature "Favored Terrain" would work as a substitute, assuming I selected the "Mountains" subcategory. I'd be interested in seeing your take on the abilities.

I'll have fun playing Grumble with or without the PrC, but it serves as a good summary for the role I'd envision Grumble filling. (Which usually means, with my luck, that we'll be doing little more than hacking thru one 10x10 room after another! ;P)

Being able to predict the weather with an Intelligence check (DC 13) is a perfectly reasonable trait.

That will work, Chris, but I've been checking the skill descriptions to see how Beta does weather knowledge. (Opening the book is just so cool! And it has a great new-book smell!) Under K(nature) it says a DC15 will identify unatural weather phenomenon, and under Survival a DC15 check will predict the weather for up to 24 hours in advance (for each 5 you exceed the DC you can predict for an additional 24 hrs).

Perhaps we could use:
Trait- Knack for Weather: The character recieves a bonus (of whatever you decide) to K(Nature) and Survival on rolls dealing with the weather.
This has the advantage of allowing me to improve over time, although both skills are non-class for clerics and K(Nature) is a trained-only skill.

By the way, Did you know that according to folklore (or at least Ars Magica) a Moro is a vampire created when parents murder their children by exposure? Their powers allow them to take the form of a Death's Head Moth, create storms, and drain the life of sleeping victims.
Color me inspired. (the storms and exposure part, not the vampire part) I forsee a butterfly-shaped birthmark and a rocky childhood.

I turn my head sideways, like a dog who's just been startled by something you can't hear. (Rich Hall coined the term "twinch".) It seems odd that a Wisdom skill predicts normal weather, but an Intelligence skill identifies unnatural weather. But there it is.

Sure, niel, let's go with Knack for Weather: The character recieves a +2 bonus to K(Nature) and Survival rolls dealing with the weather.

And you're playing a cleric of Gozreh. Make K(Nature) a class skill.

husband half Italian Expert 15 (carpenter 5/ gamer 5/ reader 5)

Thanks, Chris.

Another question regarding the worship of Gozreh. The Gazetteer entry gives him a nationality of Mwangi and puts the center of his worship in the area of the Eye of Abendego, in Thuvia, and in Varisia. This suggests to me that he is honored in our locale but perhaps without any organized priesthood. Would it fit your setting if my character was a cleric of Gozreh, but not a formal priest? By that I mean, not part of his organized faith or formally trained in his priesthood? I'm not looking to be his local high priest or anything, but also not looking to be part of a formal, local temple. What would fit for you?

Hmmm.

How do you imagine he would interact with a sincere follower of Gozreh who was badly misunderstanding some of the god's tenets? Or with a priestess who was very much involved in the church organization, and who sought to enlist you in a mission under the church's auspices?

Consider making your character either
(a) a pilgrim, well-versed in Gozreh's teachings and a priest in good standing, but on "detached duty" in an area where the church has more roadside shrines than grand cathedrals, or
(b) a "favored soul", upgraded to be competitive with the Pathfinder base classes.
