Martaug was born of a petty chief of the Sliced Tongue Clan and a favored huan slave woman. He ran with the tribe for 7 winters across the eastern reaches of the Hold of Belkzin. Late in his 7th year, a clan war erupted with the Howling Chasm Clan, decimating the entire Split Tongue tribe. Martaug is the lone survivr of the tribe and still mourns their passing. The small half-orc did the only thing he could... he ran day and night until he collapsed many miles south of his former clan holdings.
When he awoke, he realized he had no idea how far he had run, but could see the spreading foliage of a mighty forest far to the south. Delerious wih exhaustion, thirst, and hunger, they boy threw himself on the first prey he found... a large centipede. It wasn't adequate to fill his hunger, but it reduced the pangs somewhat. As he moved south toward the forest, he ate any bug he came across -- beetles, grasshoppers, a palm-sized spider that was missing one leg... It was just enough to give him fuel.
He soon came to the northern reaces of the Fangwood forest and as he moved into the shade ready to hunt more substantial meat, he heard a low drone. He soon found the beehive in the bowl of a tree. Accepting the risk of the stings, he moved in with a twig and dug out the sweet, sticky treasure. Moving with deliberate calm and not slapping at the bees kept them much calmer than he expected. It wasn't until after he had eaten two scoops of the nectar that the druid who had been watching him made himself known.
Afrel Torbannu took Martaug in and taught him...reading, understanding the natural world, and how to start bending nature to his will and giving back to it in return. Martaug took to the man quickly and loved having the secrets of the world unfolding to him. He spent the next several years as Afrel's devoted apprentice, but also retained a love of the other great savior of his life...insects. He continues to study them whenever he can.
When his apprenticeship was done, Afrel urged Martaug to travel to Ustalav. Their circle felt dire forces moving throw Golarion out of balance and wanted to get a few members in place to report back. Martaug was happy to assist those who had opened such a wide world to him. He chose Carrion Hill as his destination.
Upon reaching Carrion Hill, Maraug has found a farmer on the outskirts of town and rented sleeping space in his barn. He has started a beekeeping operation and sells the honey in the town. He has lived with Farmer Blyllen for the past two years and has been teaching the farmer's youngest son, Thon Blyllen, how to work the skeps and beehives.
