Sorry, I didn't realize that you were waiting for me. I was in fact waiting for you to decide what to do about the note. Let's get this ball rolling.

I wasn't waiting for you. I expected Rana's response to the note to be forthcoming. Thalyn had indicated that something was on its way a while back.

EDIT: Spelling correction

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Hello there. I know that it's weekend and that real life can be a little overwhelming but I can't help worrying a little about the post rate. Probably it's just adjusting itself to a normal rate, but it's been a bit of a sudden drop.

Anyway, in the past I have taken the liberty of posting for anyone who's been offline for more than 24 hours (or asking someone else to do it), and I hope that's reasonable.

This fight isn't really that memorable, so by now anyone is invited to post for those who are up but not responding (including Royl, until Ainvar is back). I'd like to wrap it up as soon as possible.

With a little luck things might get a bit more interesting the next game day.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Good to see you all again, except thalyn. Anyone know anything?

Black Tom wrote:

Haven't heard anything, myself.

My guess would be Rana would attempt to grapple the dire rat with the whip with one hand, while decapitating it with his short-sword. I don't know how to roll grapple (I should learn those rules. I should prolly also learn the 3.5 rules lol)* ...Anyhow, let's not let one m.i.a. keep this from moving forward, we wouldnt at a tabletop game would we? For instance last friday, our bard simply sang the entire night, heh.

Black Tom, I haven't ever had this much fun in a pbp. And plus, I am starting to learn how to play my character well, thanks to your excellent dm'ing. Bows. Sorry I guess it's sunday night melodrama, haha.

*Incidentally, anyone know how 4E does gerapple?

I have no contact with Thalyn outside of this game, so I've got nothing to share. I posted for Rana this round, but he would not be able to grapple the rat with his whip from range and poke it with the sword from melee. I had him do a move action to walk up next to Grond and strike the rat -- I think he got a crit, too!

On another note, doesn't it figure that I would roll a 23 against a creature that my Heavenly Fire doesn't affect? Bummer.

Good to see everyone back. I've missed y'all.

Accepts accolade gracefully. This is my first PBP, but I have seldom had this much fun in a tabletop game, so it's not just me.

I'm a little concerned about Rana, still. Rana is no problem to run, but I want this to be a fast-paced game, and most of you seem to be able to keep up. For now, anyone who feels up to it can post for Rana in battles, and apart from that he'll just tag along.

I think I'll give Thalyn a week to respond and then we'll see what we can do about it. He mentioned nursing school and RL, so I understand that he's busy. I'm sorry to be so harsh, but I think we have a good thing going and I don't want to slacken the pace if I don't have to.

Otto R. Ringus wrote:

Here are the basics per the PHB.

Spoiler:

Grab
You seize a creature bodily and keep it from moving.
The creature you grab can attempt to escape on its
turn (see “Escape”).

GRAB: STANDARD ACTION
- Target: You can attempt to grab a creature that is
smaller than you, the same size category as you, or
one category larger than you. The creature must be
within your melee reach (don’t count extra reach
from a weapon).
- Strength Attack: Make a Strength attack vs. Reflex.
Do not add any weapon modifiers. You must have at
least one hand free to make a grab attempt.
Hit: The enemy is immobilized until it escapes
or you end the grab. Your enemy can attempt to
escape on its turn.
- Sustaining a Grab: You sustain a grab as a minor
action. You can end a grab as a free action.
- Effects that End a Grab: If you are affected by a
condition that prevents you from taking opportunity
actions (such as dazed, stunned, surprised, or unconscious),
you immediately let go of a grabbed enemy.

If you move away from the creature you’re grabbing,
you let go and the grab ends. If a pull, a push, or a
slide moves you or the creature you’re grabbing out
of your reach, the grab ends.

To move a grabbed target, you must succeed on a
Strength attack. However, helpless allies are treated as
objects; you just pick them up and move them.

MOVE A GRABBED TARGET: STANDARD ACTION
- Strength Attack: Make a Strength attack vs. Fortitude.
Do not add any weapon modifiers.
Hit: Move up to half your speed and pull the
grabbed target with you.
- Opportunity Attacks: If you pull the target, you
and the target do not provoke opportunity attacks
from each other, and the target doesn’t provoke
opportunity attacks from adjacent enemies. However,
if you leave a square adjacent to an enemy, that
enemy can make an opportunity attack against you.

Escape
You attempt to escape from an enemy who has
grabbed you (see “Grab”). Other immobilizing effects
might let you make escape attempts.

ESCAPE: MOVE ACTION
- Acrobatics or Athletics: Make an Acrobatics check
vs. Reflex or an Athletics check vs. Fortitude against
the creature or effect that immobilized you.
- Check: Resolve your check.
Success: You end the grab and can shift as part of
this move action.
Failure: You’re still grabbed

I would have no problem running Rana if we want to nominate a regular substitute (assuming I'm available at the needed time, of course.) I don't think my personality split would worsen from playing a magic-phobic warrior and a combat-incapable sorcerer. Then again, it might. No, no, it shouldn't be a problem. ;-)

AinvarG wrote:

So you admit to it then?

Lol, just joshin' good trick you did with the alias, had me fooled!

Nice substitution AinvarG.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Indeed. I think Ainvar deserves a hero point for that brilliant Rana impersonation.

*bows to applause*

Thank you, thank you. I just hate to let a character fade away just because the player has RL. Since this seems to have met with approval from the majority, I'll try to keep Rana involved somewhat until Thalyn can rejoin us.

I'm out for the rest of the day. Feel free to improvise for Proteus if necessary.

I am totally lost on the mapping, BT. I've tried to keep up but the recent descriptions have gotten very confusing. When we get to our next combat, could you shoot me a copy of the map so far?

Thanks!

Partial map sent.

PS: Got to love the Harry Potter Latin.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Hello there,

I'm toying with the idea of starting another group doing the same adventure. I just realized just how big this baby is and how much opportunity for adventure there is. So I think I'll start a party doing some of the urban/wilderness quests while you explore the dungeon. This will hardly affect you at all except possibly tying up a loose end or two.

It's not that I've lost interest in you - in fact it's the very opposite. The reason I'm telling you is that you are welcome to join if you have more time to waste and can handle two characters at different places in the same campaign world. But primarily I hope to include some new players.

You can tell that I have too much time on my hands. As a matter of fact I'm unemployed at the moment and making the best of it. I will start a recruiting thread soon, but I just wanted to give you a little heads up in case any of you are interested.

I was hoping so. ;) You're in, if you like.

Have you considered also adding a player to this game? I love a fast paced game, and the way I see it, the more players one has, the less a single absence will hurt the rest of the game.

Or even, with the congruous nature of the dual campaigns, characters could in theory pass between parties or at least interact.

I don't really want to add another character. I'm afraid that would rather slow things down. But if thalyn doesn't make an appearance, we might have to replace Rana.

On the other hand, if I were to get another party going, I'm not against characters crossing over should the opportunity arise. But this party is of course my priority.

My hat's doffed to you sir, it sounds like an unbelievably cool way to run a campaign, and the possibilities are limitless! I have often wondered what it would be like to DM multiple parties in the same 'verse. Having multiple generations is pretty neat, what with the wide variance of lifespans among the races, so I have seen some of that type of crossover, but even then it is either a cameo, or an NPC type thing. But two parties at once, wow, you could have a dungeon where we each are trying to get to the final room lol! It would be Survivor: Dungeon omygod I must immediately go get another group together haha!

Godd luck, sounds awesome, u r awesome DM.

Black Tom wrote:

My first priority would be joining this group but if Thalyn comes back (and I hope he does) than the other group would be great.

If you are looking for opinions. I would like to see Thaylin's spot filled here, also. I'm not against you running another campaign nor do I think that AinvarG is not doing a particularly good job and I suppose that if AinvarG has his heart set on keeping up with Rana that's fine and I would not be against it.

However, if Thaylin doesn't show up fairly quickly, my preference would be to drop Rana and take on a new player/PC.

Liberty's Edge

Human (Minkai) Samurai (sword saint) 7 (Order of the Warrior)

Sounds like a ton of fun, but I'd be lying through my teeth if I said I had time for it.

I do look forward to seeing what comes out of it, though!

That's my plan too, regardless of how it works out with the new group. I decided to give him until Monday, but then I think we'll replace him at the first opportune moment. Dark Arioch, do you have a character concept in mind? I think the group is fairly well balanced, so about any core class would do.

No offense taken. I wouldn't mind playing the split personality, but it's not really fair to everyone else -- and my diametrically-opposed characters would probably begin to agree once in a while, which seems wrong. ;-)

All that to say I'm fine with bringing a new player in. Maybe Rana could migrate to the other game or become an NPC. I do hate to kick a character to the curb.

As for the additional story thread, I must politely decline. I just got an invite for one I've been watching for quite a while (and I accepted it) and I don't think I would do another justice, especially adding two at the same time. I'm confused enough as it is.

Looking forward to interacting with the other party, though. I like how Tarren's done that in his Kerrigan's Keep threads.

I agree that Rana as an NPC would be nice. I, also, must decline an invite into your other campaign, Tom. Nursing school is kicking my butt and taking everything I can do to keep up. Thank you very much, though for thinking of us first.

No, not as of yet. I'll have to think about it. I'll see if I can have something put together by Monday.

Drop me a hint as soon as you know at least class, race and alignment, so I can figure out a way of getting you in as soon as possible. You'll start with 50% of the xp of the least experienced party member (which I think would be Proteus).

Dark Archive

Thinking race: human
alignment: something "good"
class: barbarian or fighter (since that is what you lost)

Seems like it would help alot to continue with the balance created by having Rana around. Gives Sandros someone to flank with and keeps the "baddies" off of the spellcasters.

However, I am completely open to ideas if any of you have different thoughts....

The door's open - you can do what you like. A tank is one option, someone with a strong ranged threat is another, or a combination of the two, even.

But if you show up with another halfling sorcerer, we'll still have fun!

Dark Archive

ok, I think I have settled on a barbarian. Haven't played one yet and have some good ideas for background. I have a question. Can a barbarian use a bow while raging? Doesn't seem to restrict it but not entirely clear either.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat
Dark Arioch wrote:

I have always considered raging a form of battle trance, so yes.

Depending on your background you might want to be Skandik or Tharbrian. Skandiks get Sail (campaign-specific skill) and Swim as a class skill and Tharbrians get Ride and Survival. In either case you'd need to spend a language to learn Common, though. Of course you could also be of mixed race (default human).

Taking what BT sent me and what I could glean from the boards, I have posted a semi-complete map of what we have done so far. I will try to make it a little more descriptive but, quite honestly, I am slammed with school right now.

I promised to get it updated tonight, though, so I knocked out as much as I could. The links are on the Barakus cartography site here.

I took a guess at the top of the hallway we are in right now, BT. If it is wrong, let me know. I'd also like to know where the opening in the ceiling is.

I will leave up the more descriptive "finding fenton" maps to refer back to until I have a chance to do more work on the maps.

Oh, and glad to have you aboard, Dark Arioch.

Ummm... any spots open here? I have been looking for awhile for a group but I always seem to come in later, I finally made a thread, but nothing yet. Maybe you guys need one more?

Sorry, but the spot has already been filled. Dark Arioch, you are officially welcome into the game.

I tried to start up a second party, but there didn't seem to be any interest. Maybe I phrased it poorly. You could always post a response in that thread in case you are interested. If I could get at least three players I'm good to go.

I think Ironhard's game just lost a player, so you might have better luck there.

The map is quite accurate. The opening in the ceiling would be in 1803. Thanks again.

Had a few spare moments today, so I got the map updated so it looks a little prettier and has more information. I also have placed the party members based on current actions and marching order. If there are any problems, let me know.

Hmmm, not sure I follow here. Don't barbarians get Swim, Ride, and Survival as class skills anyway?

Female Human Barbarian 7

Well, here is a very basic writeup. Still needs equipment (how much gold do we start with?)and some more background. Originally was male but decided based off the party makeup to give Roylenna a little bit of female support (and Grond has the big strong tuff guy role filled out nicely already) and I liked the roleplaying opportunities. All in all I think she's coming together nicely.

Very nice. You start with 3d6*10 gp, or 105 if you don't want to bother to roll, and you can buy pretty much anything that you can afford.

You're welcome to jump right in. There is a post addressed to you in the game thread, so I hope to get you involved right away. We'll shed Rana as soon as you've made your introductions. If thalyn returns he can join the other party if there is one.

She's chaotic so had to roll the dice gold roll (3d6=12)

Totally off-topic idle question for the DM: Would 1/4 orcs be considered half-orc or human?

Heh. This is going to be so much fun. I'm already sniggering. Oops, censored. Perhaps I may say snickering, then?

Actually a player of mine wanted to play a 1/4 drow once. I'd go with human, but for a PC you'd get to choose.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Gee, that went really smooth, I must say. Given his background it makes perfect sense for Rana to run at the sight of Ka'Kara. Well, maybe not perfect, but good enough.

I am sorely tempted to keep Rana as an NPC in the second party, partly to keep the door open if thalyn decides to rejoin and partly because it's a shame to waste a well-crafted character. It looks like they could use a fighter, too.

What is the etiquette of these cases?

Dark Archive

Don't count your chickens before they hatch ;)

I'd say it's ok to make Rana as much a part of the game as you wish to. The same holds true in RL games when run.
