It is still set in the '80s, I believe, but some things will be changed for the film.

Spoiler:
Like the alien invasion plot, for instance.

Is it just me, or does Niteowl have less of a gut than he should?

Exactly. These characters are washed up and retired for about 10 years. Dreiberg's even referred to as Captain Pudgy in some spoofs. The only one's who should be in good shape should be Rorscach (who possesses zero amount of hygeine) and Adrian. The Comedian should be in good shape for a guy in his 60's ... and he should be much bigger in terms of muscle.

I mean come on ... Dreiberg is a sad sad individual in the book until about chapter 10 ... and his costume is meant to *hide* him ... cuz he's impotent and lacks self-esteem. He's a 45 yo couch potato.

I have fears .....

It's been a few years since I read the source, but I do remember Niteowl kicking a bit of ass once he gets back into costume. He should have a bit of a belly, but the muscle memory's still there for the fighting and stuff...He's not that much of a sad sack. Maybe he's got a really efficient corset under that suit.

Seeing the owlship in motion was just too cool, though.

Spoiler:

Here's hoping they keep the winter owl costume and hover-things too.

Watching the Rorshach parts again slowly, it looks like his mask shifts in all of his scenes. It's minor, I know, but it's damn cool. I want a mask that can do that.

I'm with those that hate 300. I didn't think the source material was that great, and I agree that Frank Miller is terribly overrated outside of Dark Knight Returns, but the film version was just awful, IMHO.

For those who asked what Alan Moore thinks of this adaptation, there was an interesting proxy exchange between Snyder and Moore on the subject. Snyder claimed that the worst case scenario would be that Moore would watch the DVD and say that it didn't suck too bad. Moore's response: "That's the worst case scenario? I think he's underestimated what the worst case scenario would be...I'm never going to watch this f*****g thing." So I'd say he's not on board.

Personally I would be very surprised if this adaptation was any good. It looks well photographed and reminiscent of the original art, but I absolutely hated the shot where Nite Owl jumpkicks the guy and it slows down, then speeds back up again. That kind of trick indicates to me that Snyder doesn't understand the kind of movie this should be, and I think he's going to sacrifice the emotional complexity for action and badassery, which is exactly what happened with V for Vendetta.

Many of the scenes I saw, while well crafted and exciting, indicate that they are trying to pull in the Matrix crowd. This is not the way the story should be told.

Huh. Is it still set in the 80's then?

And new buyers beware, the story is very rooted in the political climate of the 80's. It loses less than V For Vendetta if you don't know/remember much about the climate from that time though.

As far as I know it still is. Course remember that it's a little skewed by the fact that Nixon is still in office and we won the Viet Nam war decidely in the book's continuity.

Awesome. Anyone know what the song is that plays during the last part? I would like to get a copy of it.

Caught that in the previews before the new Bond movie. So glad it looks like they'll pull it off.
