"The world will look up and shout 'save us' and I will whisper 'no'."
Damn, that send chills down anyone else's spine?
Freaking awesome trailer.
Having been a Watchman fan for a long time, I don't think there's a more powerful statement, something that wraps up the tone of the book more, than that line right there. Makes me shiver every time.
This is going to be excellent.

I don't know, this might be a hoax... looks pretty shoddy, and whatever it's supposed to be based off of sounds made up. :P
O.O Didn't look made up or shoddy to me, those ARE the actors for the spots, and they DO match the publicity photos released. Not sure what you're seeing, but what I saw was pretty snazzy.

If I remember correctly, when Terry Gilliam was attempting to make The Watchmen as a film he said the only way to do the source material justice would be to make a movie out of each issue. A mere two and a half hours at most might create an abortion that would make League of Extraordinary Gentleman seem like celluloid high art.
The film adaptations of all of Alan Moore's comics so far looked pretty. But I don't have high hopes for this one. Hope I'm wrong, but I don't suspect I am.

I was worried about fitting all of the story into a single movie, too. However, the trailer looks pretty promising in that regard, as it shows key moments from throughout the story - including several "flashbacks", like the Comedian and Dr. Manhattan in Vietnam, and the Comedian on the Owlship confronting a mob. (It took me several viewings before I spotted Dr. Manhattan's big blue legs behind the Comedian in the former scene!)

I teach Watchmen in my freshmen research/critical reading class. I also worry about the quality of the movie. I am trying to suspend my judgement, but it's not lookin good. Niteowl is costumed in a far too open manner which completely misses the point of impotent Dan Dreiberg. Adrian looks like a little boy in power armor. Comedian looks too plastic and not grim enough.
Also, it'll be far too hard to do it justice. I'm prayin it will work, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Apart from the Peeing-My-Pants feeling I got from watching the trailer, I'd have to agree with IconoclasticScream that so far the movie adaptations have not been very good. From Hell was a steaming pile compared to the graphic novel, and League was also lobotomized. The psychological complexity of Watchmen, plus all the internal dialogue, letters, set pieces and mockumentary evidence, makes it unlikely they'll be able to show the depth of the graphic novel in only a few hours. Doing a scene-by-scene reenactment, much as it excites me as a fanboy, is not the best way to direct a movie.

I read a comment from the director (Zach Snyder) he was originally opposed to making Watchmen a movie (he didn't think it would translate well between mediums), but since the studio was dead set on making it, he pursued it because he wanted to make sure that someone who actually cared about the material was working on it.
I haven't read the graphic novel, but from what I understand the "comic-within-a-comic" from the original material was filmed and will be part of a separate DVD released around the time of the movie.

I was impressed that Rorshach's mask was shifting in the close-up of his face. That's too freaking cool.
Please don't let this suck.
There are too many cool literary tricks and techniques that made the source such an awesome book, I'm not sure how a translation will work and be more than a popcorn flick.
My favorite device/trick is issue V which focuses on Rorshach, and it's symmetrical. The panel layout, the themes, the characters in those panels, if you look at 1st page, last page, 2nd page, 2nd last page, etc. it is pretty cool.

Yes, which is why Moore said this: "With a comic, you can take as much time as you want in absorbing that background detail, noticing little things that we might have planted there. You can also flip back a few pages relatively easily to see where a certain image connects with a line of dialogue from a few pages ago. But in a film, by the nature of the medium, you're being dragged through it at 24 frames per second."
"You get people saying, 'Oh, yes, Watchmen is very cinematic,' when actually it's not. It's almost the exact opposite of cinematic."

I still don't know, this looks like it could be just about the worst rendition of "Lady Windermere's Fan" ever conceived. Oscar Wilde must absolutely be spinning in his grave. :P
There's this thing called irony.... ;)
Don't tell! Then they'll know about our secret weapon! ^_~

Does anyone know if Moore himself has given this the thumbs up?
Unless he's had a change of heart, and I doubt seriously his serpent god allows that, he's disavowed any effort to translate his fiction to other media. He's not credited as a writer of the Watchmen film, nor for LoEG and From Hell.

Hollywood has consistently turned his stories to poop in the past. From what i understand, he's justifiably upset with the movie industry in general.
He is against it, but resigned to the fact its out of his hands. He will not speak with DC/Warner Bros. at all...they've been told that if they call, he'll change his number. He signed off his share of the stake in the movie to Dave Gibbons (the artist for the comics).

You beat me to it ;)
Edit: if you search the iTunes Music Store for "Watchmen" there's something called Watchmen Motion Comics in the TV Shows section. I haven't watched it yet, looks like the original comic art with narration and some animation.

When I first saw 300, I went back and forth on it before ultimately realizing that I was over-thinking it and I just didn't like it. It's proof that making a movie of totally straight leather speedo clad men killing and beating the s@+! out of each other isn't actually enough to be considered entertaining.

I was too well-read on the actual history for me to enjoy 300. Besides, I think that Frank Miller is overrated as an author and needs some serious psychiatric help as a person.

No, Sebastian, you are not alone!
I didnt like it as an adaptation and a few nights back I tried to see it as a movie, couldnt do it.specially after this scene.

I never made the connection before between the watch theme in the comic and the name "watchmen".
That's kinda like going to a drow city and looking at a temple to Lolth and saying "Who's the b#&@! with the spiders?"
(Yes, my players said that. ;) )
Edit: What's the song in the trailer? I can't place it, and it's been stuck in my head ever since.

*snag*
Check out "The End Is the Beginning Is the End" too. They're pretty much flipsides of each other..
The only two good things to come out of the Schumaker Batman movie besides Kilmer's super awesome table slide.

Was watching the trailer again and I noticed the World Trade Center in the background of the shot where the owlship comes up from the river. Might have to buy the graphic novel at B&N while getting breakfast in a few.
I hope it comes over well and I believe Snyder wants to do it the justice he and many people feel it deserves.
There was some parts of an interview linked on Scifi.com where Snyder talked about the visual depth and rewards of second and third readthroughs. He referenced a quote of moore's that said that moore's books wouldn't do well as movies cause of the things you notice on later readthroughs and are in fact often written assuming that people notice things they missed or didn't know to look for at first. Snyder said with the shorter amount of time between theatrical release and dvd and other forms of the film, he expects that it will be easier for people to watch it several times and catch those nuances.

Huh. Is it still set in the 80's then?
And new buyers beware, the story is very rooted in the political climate of the 80's. It loses less than V For Vendetta if you don't know/remember much about the climate from that time though.
