Arcane Bond and the Craft Magic Feats

Races & Classes

Ok, I might have missed this in another thread, but could someone clarify how arcane bond works with the craft feats? Specifically, is a wizard with a bonded object such as a ring able to use "Forge Ring" on his or her ring ASAP or do they have to wait until they reach the appropriate caster level for Forge Ring (12th), at which point they get the feat for free? My friend and I think that you can start using Forge Ring ASAP, as soon as you meet the pre-requisites for whatever enhancement you want to do. For example, a wizard could probably add protection +1 by third level or so. Is this right?

I hope we get an official answer to this soon. :\

The arguments are strong for both sides of the coin, with neither being a clear winner.
(though i have always wondered why crafting rings of protection require you to be 3x caster level of the + you want to make, even though it requires CL 12 to take the feat.. meaning that if you have the feat, you can make +4 already.. just seems odd)

Myself, I lean more towards letting them enchant the items as soon as they have the money. I would read that the Arcane Bond ability removes the "CL" requirement of that specific feat, for that specific item.
All other requirements of crafting it would have to be met.

But, that's just my opinion, and the arguments in opposition are just as good.

I think that the Forge Ring feat is just wonky to start with. Without a clearer differentiation between rings and wondrous items, I think forge ring should just go away and let Craft Wondrous Items be able to make rings just like it already makes amulets, gloves, boots, etc.

Actually I asked this one on a previous thread. Jason chimed in and said that they must meet the requirements for the feat,It is almost like a virtual feat. For example they need to be 12th level to take the feat Craft Ring, so they need to be 12th level to craft thier bonded item. They just get the ability to do that with out taking the feat.

I honestly think it better that way. I had a person in my group right out of the starting gate try to creat a magic staff. It just a little powerful for a low level character to start out with.

That makes the most sense to me. You have the ability to use the feat without having to take it at the original appropriate level and it costs you half the price to use.

So at level 1 you choose a Wand. You can't actually enchant it with any spell until level 5 but you can cast a free spontaneous spell each day with it.
At level 5 you pay half the normal cost to enchant it with >>insert favorite 3rd level spell here<< and when you've used up the charges and levelled some you get to upgrade the spell.

Seems pretty nice to me :)

Thanks for clarifying this for me (and thanks to Jason for replying in earlier thread). One final thing. Am I correct in assuming that this means one can craft your bonded item for one-quarter market cost (i.e. one-half of the normal price for crafting a magic item)?
