"That poor sinner doesn't look capable of lying with the Beast." Frederick mourns, letting his gaze linger on the woman once again as he tries to find some clue as to the real reason her birth has caused such a ruckus-- doubting even then that anything could be obvious. Except for, maybe, the preacher's madness. "But his wickedness has corrupted many souls..."

"We should watch-- and be purified in the watching. My companion here was once a boisterous and jovial man but the sins of the world have stolen all by the fewest words from his mouth, his frown is our constant companion." He speaks, naturally, of Urso and gives the man a few reassuring pats on the back.

"Please... don't let us delay you further." He motions Urso to one side of the road and steps back himself, allowing for the preacher to continue along it-- intending to talk in hushed tones with his teammate once they are no longer the center of attention. "Is this all of you, preacher? Is it too much to hope that there are more faithful in the camp that have been saved by your blessed words?"

Getting out of the procession's way with the last question, hoping for an answer and then planning on talking quickly and quietly with Urso as the preacher leads them along.

The preacher's head hangs slightly and he shakes his head. "Nay, child, this is all of God's chosen in this blighted land. Once there were more of us, before Satan's minions ran us out of our homes in the East. We've come here seeking more righteous souls like yourselves to join our crusade across Hell's landscape in hopes of finding salvation beyond the wastes. We do not linger long in one place, for the hell-spawned beasts give us no quarter here in their playground. Join us, brothers, and be purified by His Holiness."

The procession continues on towards the burning spot where a few of the congregation scatter to gather scraps of wood strewn about. They come dangerously close to Therese and Spyro's positions in the process, but the duo remain cleverly hidden from sight.

Just a quick weekend update so you can get your dialog underway. I'll be updating more during the week as normal. Assume that Urso and Fred can get far enough away to avoid being heard without arousing suspicion.

"I am getting the sense that the preacher is too mad to give us any sort of useful information." Frederick murmurs with Urso after the majority of the procession has passed, his words lost in the general murmur of prayer a scant few inches from the other man's ear. "We might be able to talk sense into his flock but I would rather not bet against the armed men's fervor."

"The woman will side with us, surely, and I am trying to get a better sense of some that I might be able to manipulate before we start killing."

Realize I probably won't get a response until Monday to this but I did want to try some more of the Sense Emotions as people pass-- hoping for some trepidation in the guards or some such.

We don't lose our line of sight to the group and, more specifically, to its armed members, do we?

Thérèse Beaupre wrote:

No, in fact, they're quite close now. Less than 20m away.

Frederick Falen wrote:

Fred:

Spoiler:
Frederick is disheartened to learn that, of the guards he is able to pick up any emotion at all from, the overwhelming sense of zeal and righteousness seems to pervade them. It's almost as if they're completely brainwashed. It even seems to go outside Frederick's realm of experience with the human psyche. Most of the "congregation" is devoted in a way so fanatical that it seems beyond belief. To say this is "peculiar" would be an understatement.

"The woman will side with us, surely, and I am trying to get a better sense of some that I might be able to manipulate before we start killing."

Urso nods briefly and studies the assemblage. "The armed men will be the most indoctrinated, their faith unshakable. I do not hold out hope that you will be able to sway them or the preacher. I do not feel right driving the rest into the wasteland, so I hope they will not make that necessary."

Briefly scanning the area, Urso locates the closest area of decent cover and subtly indicates it to Frederick. "When the shooting starts, we run for that. I hope Therese will have the self-control necessary for this to work."

Frederick nods idly as Urso speaks, his own attention split between the conversation and the passing members of the procession. Looking back once the other man is done talking he runs a hand through his hair and clears his throat, thinking for another moment before adding "The preacher has done something to them. He may be a psion or he might be something else but I am quite certain that their mental state has been altered by some abnormal external force."

"I am almost tempted to insist that he is killed first in the hopes that, with him removed, whatever alterations he's made can be undone. It is a dangerous gamble but it seems now that even the unarmed members of his flock would blindly attack us without regard for their own personal safety, so deeply ingrained is their fanaticism.

Spyros whispers to Therese, "It looks like it's going well, right?"

The members of the congregation undertake their grim work solemnly, gathering scraps of wood from a pile situated just inside the blasted-out hangar's east side and assembling a pyre around the scorched metal framework in the hangar's former center. Spyro and Therese remain hidden just behind the remnants of the western hangar wall while Urso and Fred conspire a dozen meters or so north of the pyre.

The two guardsmen holding the woman, neither of which are armed, stoicly maintain themselves while the wood is piled up to the hymn of various prayers issued forth by the preacher. One of the younger members of the congregation, a male perhaps no more than 20, excitedly approaches Urso and Fred.

"Would you like to join us, brothers? Come forward and receive the Lord's grace."

The woman continues sobbing uncontrollably, but she makes no efforts to escape her captors. She can occassionally be heard murmuring to herself, perhaps uttering a prayer of some kind. Regardless, she seems resigned to her fate.

Spoiler:
Thérèse shakes her head slightly, her eyes never leaving the congregation. "Non, it's not," she whispers back, her French accent thickening with stress. "Something's wrong. Someone down there is either a latent... or an Aberrant." She hisses in frustration. "But I cannot tell who. Either way, Falen and Urso are in more danger than they know, and we may all of us be overmatched."

Sorry! Though shouldn't Urso and Fred be whispering behind spoilers as well?

Therese

Spoiler:
"Oh- Oh that's not good. And they are gathering wood..."

Thérèse Beaupre wrote:

Yeah, they probably should, but they also don't have the kind of priviledged information that you do. It's also why I didn't say anything about Spyro's comment either. :D Let's make it easy and have everyone in spoilers until you form a unified group again.

Can I fire off an Attunement to yea/nay the presence of psion or worse in the congregation?

Urso apes the look on the faces of the congregation to hide his shock and surprise.

Spoiler:
"We need to isolate and take down the psion. Perhaps this will end the mind control. We will be able to accomplish nothing here until that is done."

What are the locations of the armed men? What is the focus of their attention?

Urso follows Frederick's lead, but will keep Fred within arms reach and both of them within running distance of good cover if at all possible. He'd want to be closer to any of the armed men that Therese and Spyros don't have a clear shot on.

Urso wrote:

Unfortunately, the ambient Taint in the area makes such scanning impossible unless you happen to have the Clairsentient basic power that amplifies your Attunement sensitivity...

Urso wrote:

They have presently shouldered their weapons and are in the midst of assisting the others with building the pyre. All of them are fairly clear targets from the team's present positions. There are four total: two with assault rifles, probably fully automatic, the other two with shotguns.

Spyros:

Spoiler:
In a fierce whisper, Thérèse orders, "Ready your weapon. We are running out of time. Our priority must be the safety of Falen and Urso, so if the time comes, we will drop the guards with shotguns first - they will be more dangerous at short range, and our fire will draw the attention of those with the machine guns, which should allow Falen and Urso the time they need to reach cover." Thérèse's eyes still search the crowd, endlessly. "Focus your attention on the guard with the shotgun on the left, there. That is your target. I will take the other."

Her lips thin. "Once you have your target, hold for my signal, but maintain your focus on him. We will give Falen as long as we can." More quietly still, she adds, "Vite, m'sieu Falen, vite..."

Therese

Spoiler:
Spyros readies his pistol and waits with grim anticipation.

Urso

Spoiler:

The ST Guy wrote:

"Would you like to join us, brothers? Come forward and receive the Lord's grace."

"Of course we will. It would be silly to miss such a momentous occasion. Go now-- we will be close behind-- do not let our wonderment cost you a good spot near the pyre." Fred responds, looking up and quickly plastering on that same sublime smile as he greets the young follower. He lifts a hand to indicate that the fellow should go ahead and then motions for Urso to continue, sliding up to stand at his side so they might continue to mutter as they move. He rests a hand on closest of the larger man's shoulders and leans in as they walk.

Urso wrote:

"I feel certain that we will not be able to separate this man from his flock. Not entirely, anyway, and the armed men seem to have the closest... [/]connection." The way the last word is formed only serves to reiterate the agent's belief that there is some supernatural force at work here. "[i]Knowing Miss Beaupre as I do she will already have her weapon trained on the men preparing the sacrifice-- if we were to fire on the preacher I am almost certain she would follow suit. Should he drop quickly we can eliminate one or two of his armed guard in the confusion and hope sense returns quickly to the procession before we have to kill the rest."

Frederick answers the young follower in a smiling, friendly manner before motioning him ahead and following at Urso's side. He walks with one hand on the other agent's shoulder and leans in to talk as they go. He seems content to talk and follow for now as the ritual continues.

Forgot that we were visible, so I just edited to add a summary of the gestures and actions mixed in with the dialogue hidden behind the spoiler. I'll get used to this someday, promise.

The wood is piled up around the steel framework that has undoubtedly been used for this grim purpose more than once by the charring that covers its surface. The woman seems completely consigned to her fate, simply hanging limply in the arms of her captors. When the pyre is constructed, the two men lead her up to the frame and, using a pair of blackened handcuffs, secure her to the pole. Meanwhile, the preacher circles the pyre, annointing the wood with gasoline delivered from a makeshift aspergillum while chanting a Latin prayer (which is parroted by the congregation).

Finally, when the prayer is concluded, the preacher calls everyone to prayer.

"Oh Heavenly Father, hallowed be thy name, please receive unto you this sacrifice of our flesh and blood. Let thy Holiness pierce the darkness that has fallen upon our humble congregation. As we commit this sinner to the flames, let us be cleansed by your light and your love. Your eternal servants, your warriors, your children, we thank you. Amen."

At the conclusion of the prayer, one of the boys in the congregation approaches the pyre with a matchbook, pulling one out to strike it. The boy is probably no more than 13 years old. The armed men have their weapons shouldered and simply look on with anticipation, as do the others. Many of them are wringing their hands and grinning, though no one is speaking. The woman on the pyre is mumbling incoherently and sobbing uncontrollably. You assume she is likely begging forgiveness, but her warbling is completely incomprehensible.

If you intend to stop the burning, now is the time to do it. I'm going to assume that Urso and Fred are "near" the congregation while still having a clear path to cover.

It's initiative time. As far as Thérèse is concerned, Fred had his chance and lost it.

Spyros:

Spoiler:
Thérèse swears incomprehensibly under her breath. "Damn you, Falen," she finally says aduibly, then looks Spyros in the eye. "It's time. Take your aim, and fire on my mark." She lines up her shot, lets out a slow breath, and says, "Fire."

Therese and Spyro have the advantage of surprise, so the two of you may go ahead and declare your targets. I e-mailed Ithuriel a map so hopefully he will be able to link it so everyone knows where they are. Suffice to say you pretty much have a free range of targets currently, and they're all well within a single range increment of your weapons. I'll post init momentarily. Urso and Fred will not get to act in the surprise round as they are not aware of Therese's sudden attack when it happens.

Initiative:

Spyro: 13
Armed Guard 2: 13-
Fred: 11
Therese: 9
Urso: 9-
Armed Guard 4: 7
Preacher: 6
Armed Guards 1 & 3: 5

I rolled a LOT of 1s for init. :)

Therese and Spyro may take their surprise round actions first, then activity will proceed in the order shown above. Since we are declaring in reverse order and then acting, I will wait for the results of the surprise round to determine what the enemy's responses are. It's possible you may eliminate one or more of them in the surprise round.

Oh, and by the way, Guards 3 and 4 are the ones with shotguns. 1 and 2 have the assault rifles. 2 and 4 are closest to Spyro and Therese while 3 and 4 are closest to Fred and Urso. Hopefully Ith will find a way to get the map up and we'll be kosher. :)

It occurs to me that Urso and Fred may be intervening around the same time, possibly before Therese does. I apologize as my previous descriptive post may have advanced the "wood piling" proceedure faster than is strictly warranted. Fred may indeed decide to do something before the eleventh hour here. Sorry. (If not, we'll continue as planned.)

Male Portuguese

Yeah, I don't think that Urso and Fred would have just blithely stood by while the wood was piled. :)

Under the guise of remaining vigilant of the surroundings, Urso will unlimber his rifle cautiously and stares into the darkness. When it becomes clear that nothing is going to stop the ceremony, Urso will wait until the guards are bowed in prayer. Unless Fred indicates they should attack sooner, Urso will chamber a round, nod to Fred, and fire at the preacher.

Le map

You'll have to use the little zoomy tool to see it full sized.

I doubt that Fred will stand aside, but if he has decided that the shooting's inevitable, here's Thérèse's action:

Spoiler:
Two shots on Guard 3, spending a Willpower on the second shot.

Okay, notes on the map:

The "giant dog turds" on the tops of the two vehicles are just showing that they are rusted out and derelict. These are not part of the motorcade (that's way off the map). These vehicles can be used as Good Cover (+2 diff to be hit, +1 diff to hit others) but since they are riddled with holes, they can be seen through with relative ease. The solid black lines are walls. They are only a quarter-inch thick or so, but sufficient to serve as total cover. The thinner grey lines are sections of wall that have fallen apart. These come up to about waist height and can be crouched behind to serve as Good Cover. The speckled grey areas are rough terrain (covered in rubble, etc.). Movement through here costs double and you must make a Dex + Athletics roll or stumble and halt your movement. A botch means you fall and take a 3-die bashing damage effect because you're landing on sharp and broken things. The large brown X is the pyre, W is the woman, P is the Preacher, A1-A4 are the armed guards, and the PCs are noted with red letters corresponding to their names. The smaller numbers are the unarmed members of the congregation. Shooting through any of these numbers means difficulty penalties and the possibility of hitting them if you fail to hit your intended target (you do not need to BOTCH to hit the bystanders, a mere failure will result in you striking them since they are serving as "cover").

Oh, and 'B' is the Boy. Consider him a non-combatant as well, treat him like the smaller numbers.

Okay, given all that, I've edited my above action slightly.

Okay, based on Urso's post, it looks like Urso and Fred are the ones with the benefit of surprise (though Therese and Spyro have still not been spotted yet, so they will not face retaliation until after they act in the first "real" round).

Urso nods to Fred and, as the congregation is nearing the conclusion of their prayer, the South American levels his rifle at the preacher's back and breaks the stillness of the night air with a booming gunshot. The shot is a bit off, having been fired so quickly without the benefit of aim, but it strikes the preacher in the left shoulder (1L damage) and his prayer is abruptly cut off with a shriek of pain. Almost in unison, Fred levels his autopistol at the same target and unloads a massive volley of deadly projectiles. They strike the preacher full on in the back and send him to the ground (3L damage). The others look up with bewilderment on their faces while the guardsmen quickly move to make ready their weapons...

Refer to the initiative above. Please retcon anything I said about the boy approaching the pyre with a match. They interrupted before it got to that point, but the pyre is fully constructed and gassed-up. Watch your aim, especially with lasers. :)

Okay, declarations:

A1 is going to step foward between 19 and 9 to deliver a point-blank shotgun blast at Urso.

A3 is going to 'walk' 5m left (on the map) and strafe Urso and Fred with a full-auto burst, shooting around the members of the congregation.

The Preacher is coughing up blood and trying to speak to no avail.

A4 is stepping 1m forward to use the pyre as Light Cover and taking a 3-shot burst at Fred. He will be penalized for shooting through "innocents."

Urso's dec now.

Also, I'm stupid. A1 and A2 are the ones with shotguns. A3 and A4 have the assault rifles. Jesus...

Forget that I ever posted this part, cuz it's wrong:

The ST Guy wrote:

Also, the non-combatants do not inhibit movement. Assume they are panicking and trying to get out of everyone's way.

Male Portuguese

Urso will move to meet A1 and grapple him, crushing him and using him as a human shield to fend off A2's attacks. Two shotguns is too many. He'll motion to Fred to get to cover.

Therese has already declared in the spoiler above (but Shisumo can feel free to change it if circumstances warrant it now). Fred needs to dec, then we'll do the last guard before Spyro declares and acts simultaneously. :D

Fred, I assumed for your sneak attack on the preacher that you went all out and set the autopistol to max. That leaves 8 rounds in the magazine, so you can't use the max setting again.

To clarify, Thérèse wants to take out shotguns, not rifles, at least at first. Therefore, switch her target to A1. The rest of the action remains the same.

Oh, and do me a favor, Fates: roll well. I really don't want to set the woman on fire or shoot her instead. ;)

A2 is closer, also has a shotgun, and is less obstructed by bystanders, plus Urso has already declared a grapple against A1. Are you sure you want A1 and not A2?

Whoops! Read Urso's post backwards. Yes, I want A2.

Spyros is going to taser the bejeezus out of A4.

Fred will pop off another shot at the downed Preacher (burning a WP in the hopes of taking him out of the picture completely). Then take his movement to go towards the break in the wall SW of where he's standing (as far as he can make it-- 7m).

A2 will be moving to provide cover for the Preacher and taking a shot at Fred with his shotgun. All decs are finished, I'll begin resolving rolls imminently...

As the guards turn to face Urso and Fred, Spyro pops up from behind a low wall and levels his taser at the back of one of the assault rifle-wielding guards. The electrodes smack into the guard's spine and deliver an incapacitating jolt (4B). He staggers about, bewildered and unable to steady his rifle.

Another of the guards, this one a shotgun-wielder, springs into action with alarming speed. He rushes forward and dives to cover the preacher's prone and bleeding form, leveling his shotgun at Fred as he kneels. The blast catches the Neptune officer across the midsection. Though his armor protects his vital organs, the damage to his arms and legs is significant (3L to Fred) and the jolt of the impact renders him slightly winded.

Already lining up his shot, Fred is startled by the guard's rapid approach and sudden attack. Still, he steels himself against the pain and fires off the remainder of his magazine at the downed preacher, hoping to put an end to the old man. Despite the young guard's cover, the preacher's protection is far from absolute, and Fred's shots score numerous hits on the preacher's exposed head (6L!!! So dead.). The scattered brain matter leaves no illusions about the man's fate and Fred flees to the relative safety of nearby cover, the pain of his injuries already beginning to overwhelm him.

Therese watches the guard spring forward and make his attack on Fred. Unable to track his sudden movement fast enough, she finally lets loose with a series of laser blasts just as Fred executes the preacher. The first volley lands a single hit along the man's shoulder, eliciting a cry of pain (1L). The second volley is more focused however, and scores several hits along his lower back, one blowing all the way through his midsection (4L) which leaves him collapsing forward over the body of the preacher. He coughs up blood and struggles to stand, but it is clear he is fatally injured.

Urso rushes forward through the unarmed congregation and leaps for the other shotgun-toting guard, seizing him around the shoulders and preventing him from bringing the shotgun to bear. Urso's grip is not terribly secure however, and the guard twists and writhes to prevent the larger man from getting a solid hold on him. Urso headbutts the man, but is surprised by the resilience with which he springs back (1B).

A4 is stunned and the preacher is dead.

The guard Urso is engaged with tries to bring his shotgun's business end into the fight, but Urso's tenacious grapple prevents him from gaining any leverage. He fails to break free this round.

Meanwhile, the other rifle guard readies his gun to spray the field with fire, shouting loudly to the congregation to "hit the deck." The panicked crowd scatters and rolls away just as the guard opens up with a hail of bullets aimed into Urso's grapple. Urso raises an arm to shield his face, bullets hammering into the composite armor that covers the bulk of his body (0 damage). The other guard, however, does not have the advantage of ceramic trauma plating and is buried under by numerous hits all across his torso, legs, and neck (5L, he's not getting out of this one alive). He collapses in Urso's grip like a ragdoll, choking on his own blood and sucking wet air through the hole in his trachea. The shooter is stunned and awed by Urso's miraculous survival and stares blankly while wisps of smoke escape his barrel.

Confirming the body count...

Preacher: dead
A1: dying (friendly fire)
A2: dying
A3: just fine
A4: stunned (how long does that last?)

You are correct, and the stunning only applies to the character's next action, which means he'll be functional again the next round. It bears mentioning that A1 has blacked out (STA + 2 damage in a single hit) while A2 is still capable of acting (though he's suffering serious wound penalties). I'll get the next set of descriptions and initiative up here sometime either tonight or tomorrow.

The crowd scatters, uttering a panoply of cries and shrieks. Many simply hit the ground, others run to nearby cover. A few scramble to grab rocks and lengths of wood, rallying under a particularly fiery youth who proclaims:

"The Devil's minions come to save their own!"

New initiatives:
Spyro: 13
Therese: 10
A4: 10-
Urso: 8+
Fred: 8
A2: 8-
M1, M2, M3, & M4: 8-- (yes, they all rolled exactly the same)

Updated map coming soon. The 'M's are the people picking up melee weapons. I should be able to fire an updated map off to Ithy today. Once that's up, I'll handle the decs.

Just realized I forgot about A3. A3 is going first on initiative 14.

Update: The map is updated and off to Ithy's e-mail for posting. I'll go ahead and start the decs now:

All of the Ms are moving to grab 2-by-4s and rocks. Their actions will be spent arming themselves. A2 is attempting to feebly spray Therese and Spyro's area with buckshot. He will be able to hit both with one shot. Fred's dec is next (his magazine is now empty).

Male Portuguese

Urso will raise the body of the guard he was grappling over his head and bellow "We are the Sword of God, here to punish you for your sins!" He'll then hurl the bleeding body in the direction of the nearest functional gunman, aiming to intimidate the remaining people through sheer might (and a touch of rhetoric).

Fred will finish moving to take cover behind the wall. If there is sufficient time remaining he'll reload the gun-- if not he'll just move.

Waiting for A4 to declare, since it's probably going to have a hefty impact on what I do...
