actually what is the background setting / ie default setting for Pathfinder ?
Golarion.
Information about the world is available in the new Pathfinder Gazetteer.

Are there any novels planned for the Pathfinder world?
I think some supporting novels would be a great addition to the pathfinder world and could bring a lot of background flair (as seen with Eberron).
I spoke with Eric Mona at ORIGINS and he said that a novel line is something they are looking into... but didn't say when. The full interview will be up on our site when our producer gets it finished.

It's called Pathfinder Chronicles, and the action takes mostly place on the planet Golarion, especially in the Inner Sea Region (which separates the continents Avistan - where Varisia is found - and Garund). If you want to compare them to our world, Europe would be a good name for Avistan, and Africa for Garund.
Beyond the information found in Pathfinder AP book's second half, there are already a couple of Pathfinder Chronicles books, including the Gazetteer Wicht mentioned. And next month, the Campaign Setting Hardcover will be released.
Pathfinder Chronicles will let you play basically every style you can play in D&D: Vanilla Fantasy like in GreyHawk or the Forgotten Realms, Gothic Horror like in Ravenloft, Weird Stuff like Spelljammer, Planehopping like Planescape. There's even the possibility for Technomagic or truly dark and hopeless playing like in Midnight.
