Campaign Classics returns to Dragon with these hazards from the desert world of Athas. Traveling any desert is risky, but on Athas, as if the heat, sun, and sand weren’t enough, travelers would be warned to keep an eye out for plants like these: the dew frond, sand cactus, and spider cactus.

Athas, the world of the Dark Sun campaign setting, presented Dungeons & Dragons players with one of the most challenging environments ever conceived of in a roleplaying game. It was a strange and alien world populated by a myriad of terrifying creatures and unusual races. Though metal was a rarity, psionics were everywhere. The beasts that characters encountered beyond the walls of the seven city-states were dangerous, but they were not the only hazards that heroes faced.

I adore Dark Sun. I clicked frantically at the link when I saw this post. Is it just me or aren't there a multitude of more interesting subjects to expound upon? Cactus? Sure it's fighting spunky cactus but....

Still, not terrible. I think they've suggested a few times that Dark Sun is a campaign world they'd like to revisit one year. Perhaps we'll get some DS in 2010.

Cheers! :)

Well, Psionics are already spoken for in an upcoming product, but I can think of the following:

  • More crunch on heat/desert related environment hazards (dehydration, 130+ heat etc)
  • Dark Sun variant races (Dark Sun doesn't have gnomes, so WoTC just needs to provide alternate elves, dwarves and halflings.)
  • "New" Dark Sun races: Muls, and maybe tri-keen, aarocka and Maenad.
  • Rule variants and suggestions for inferior equipment (bone, obsidian, wood) and iconic Dark Sun weapons
  • Rule for wild talents.

Interesting, albiet at only two pages seemed a bit cramped. Those obstacles writeup sure do take up a lot of spaces to detail all the different nuances. Wonder if the other articles for CC will carry on the two page format too?

Its something they can put out that is still readily plug-and-play with other campaigns besides Dark Sun.

weak

Ok I admit it looks good. Not enough. Not enough.
