Considering 4E PBP - Any Interest?

Gamer Connection

1 to 50 of 60 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

I'm thinking of starting a 4E pbp, and I'm looking for interested players. I'm probably going to start with Keep on the Shadowfell. I've never done a pbp, but I've been going over other threads and I think I have a handle on it. I'll accept 5 players.

I would like to make a suggestion. Most PBPs here are first come, first served. That creates a bit of a mad rush. I would like to recommend that you state a cut off date, and choose the best character concepts to be in the group. It may not work for everyone, because you would be choosing people, which may hurt feelings, but with disclaimers, you could try. It will give you a chance to check out their posts, and get a sense of their style. The ones who have been in long-running PBPs already are recommended, or you could tailor the requirements by posting frequency, time zone or other filters.

i'll go if you'll let me. i think a warforged warlock would be cool, if acceptable.

Hey I'd like to be in ... I'm keen on playing anything but how about a Dragonborn paladin - not too cliched I hope - I'm thinking leanly muscular 6'6" silvery colour and of course folowing Bahamut. She might even be a great Flail weilder (ornate with the head in the shape of a dragon head). Blah Blah Blah ... so what'd ya think?

;^)

I'd be interested too, though I dunno what I'd play at this point, depends on what's needed and what's allowed and all :)

Well I want to stick with something simple for 4E as I'm still not completely familiar with it. So I think I'd like to go for a Dragonborn Warlord, assuming that is ok. It seems to be a gap in the party yet to be filled anyway.

Liberty's Edge

ok so it seems we have

PRANKY - Melee Defender (Dragonborn Pally)
MITTEAN - Ranged Striker (Warforged Warlock)
AMELIA - ???
METAGAIA - Melee Leader (Dragonborn Warlord)

We might need a skill monkey (rogue), healing (cleric) &/or Controler (wizard)
Now none of these are essential in 4th Ed. though. As the warlock can pick up thievery skill and the warlord has Inspireing Word for healing in battle.
It's also interesting to see we have no humans elves or dwarves :^D

I don't think there is a class I don't want to play. They are all awesome.

I think I'll go with a halfling rogue - rogue does look interesting and halfling's are always fun!

I'm going to seal the open invites right here. Two players from my face-to-face games have expressed interest, so I'm going to leave them room (I can handle 6 players instead of 5).

I'll be posting character creation guidelines here over the next couple of days. I haven't seen anything yet that makes me cringe (although I haven't looked to closely at the Monster Manual races yet). I will be starting with Keep on the Shadowfell, so please disclose any previous experience with that.

I have no experience with pbp's, so I'm open to any ideas that will make this run smoother. I plan to use lists of pregenerated die rolls and google documents for the battlemaps. I'll probably have you post your characters here, unless anybody knows a good 4e character hosting site.

My name is Joshua, and I look forward to gaming with each of you.

I'd like to jump in as well if you still are accepting? I'm not sure what I'll play. I'll mess with some concepts now and post in a bit with my results

Sorry Tieren. I'll keep you in mind as first alternate.

We're going to use the standard array for ability scores (16, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10) and you have 100 gp for gear.

You can start posting your characters here, just put it in a spoiler. I'll work out backgrounds with each character individually.

If my other friends don't show up on here within a day or two, I'll let Tieren join.

Sounds great ... I've not read anything on KotS other than sales info. I did make up a Dragonborn Pally yesterday and then downloaded the pregen characters from WotC a couple hours later to find that my DbP build is just like their's grrr. Oh well ... I'll post her up in a bit.

Metagaia - maybe we can have something shared in our Backgrounds as we are both Martial and Dragonborn ... what'd'ya think? Tactially you set them up I'm knock them down.

Amelia - halfling rogue daggermaster would <swoon> be awesome!! Rogues rock the free work in 4th Ed.

We've got enough control between the Warlock and the Warlord, healing with the Paladin and the Warlord and traps and things with the Rogue, and a good front fighting wise. I'm going to put levels in diplomacy and charisma and warlocks I think can read magic so we are pretty balanced for all occasions.

BTW (as Josh introduced himself) My real name is Heath, I am in Sydney Australia (so my posts might be a little out of kilter time wise - then again so is my bodyclock so maybe I'm living in US time) - and I'm an actor so I have a bunch of time up my sleeve to post. I've got a show on from July but it shouldn't take up too much time and I can post at least daily.

sure, no worries

Mittean, am I right in thinking that you haven't included the strength and Con bonuses of your Warforged Warlock? It does look a genuinely interesting character to roleplay though!

Prankster, I'm still fiddling around with my build at the moment. But yes, I would like a shared background. I suggest that we both post ours independently, then steal and share the best bits to tie them together. I should get the Warlord up in a couple of hours.

My name is Chris, from Cheshire, England, so we're going to run the whole gamut of timezones in this one.

Baah. Josh, I'm here. I'm guessing I'll play an Eladrin Wizard... cause if I play one more cleric I'm gonna shoot someone with a crossbow bolt. One comment to make tho. Josh, if you were thinking of running combat with instant messanger or something of the sort... The time zones are going to kill us.

I probably should start reading my PHB...

On your turn, you must engage the target you challenged or challenge a different target. To engage the target, you must either attack it or end your turn adjacent to it. and appearance

Spoiler:

Kava stands magnificently at 6'6" tall, lithe and graceful with a swan like neck and a beamingly gentle face. Her silvery colour is matched the white scales of her armour edged with blue (giving her armour an almost porcelin appearance). To some she is grand, others beautiful; her cat-like rythms and curves impress her nature as a child of the dragon.

Her demeanor is all smiles and laughter to her friends and strangers alike but she can be as stern as a school teacher to the wicked. Her manner knows no distinction between the poor and the wealthy, the young and the old - and she is quick to state that we all have a duty of care and effort to one another regardless of our station in life. Justice is nothing without truth, honor and respect. To those who would oppress others and deny them freedoms and liberty she is an ogress - the very spirit of wrath and justice - protector of the meek.

we are a tall bunch ... Demon and Kava are 6'6" and Madresh is 6'7"
Bring on the halfling (1/4ling?) Amelia ;^). I think that Demon and Kava can exist in the same party ... she's the saintly "think the best of everyone" type. Probably baddies will catch her monologuing at them.

How about invisible castle for dice rolling Joshua? That's pretty fool proof (just suggestions). Glab to hear of the battle maps ... that makes 4th Ed PbP all the easier.
As soon as you approve my character I'll load it up as an alias to make things easy.
I think your good to play anything Cybergoat. But wizards are pretty cool - as are Eladrin.
I'll get crackign with the background. Probably be something simple as Kava is pretty benificant to have had too much of a troubled past.

I just woke up and realized to my chagrin that we aren't playing in Eberron, and my background is specifically Eberronish. Sorry. Adjust it how you will, GhettoAntilles.

Interesting character. Well, I had a few questions, but then I found the Dragon article and things made sense. Still...

First, go ahead and add in your racial bonuses to Str and Con.
How come you have three at will powers (Eldritch blast, Eyebite, Hellish rebuke)? I'm still new to 4E, so this could be an oversight on my part.

I'm going to adjust your background, but not by much. Probably just the names of places will change, and I may tie you into another character. The only suggestion I have immediately, and this is more for party cohesiveness, is to play the soul pact thing as if you feel like you lost something that you want to get back, but don't know how.

Get me your equipment and make those adjustments, and once I adjust your background we'll be all set.

Hey Chris.

We're going to do the combats via posts in the PBP section, so time zone won't be a hassle (I do expect combats to take a while, though). The Eladrin wizard will be great. Post your character here as soon as you can. Use a spoiler (from the BBCode tags below the text box).

We will be using Invisible Castle for die rolls. Once you have your characters up go ahead and post links for 50 rolls of each kind of die. I'll add them to my copies of your character and cross off a roll each time I need one. Sound fair?

Spoiler:

I hadn't added those scores, sorry.
Currently he has no possessions.
The description for the Infernal pact states he gets Hellish Rebuke as an At Will. My assumption was this was in addition to the two he can choose.
His Str is now 12
His Con is now 14
HP: 26
Bloodied: 13
Endurance: 4
Fort: 12
Everything else should be the same.
I can play him as wanting the soul back. I had intended him to start out very cavalier, grow to care about others, and view his soul as needed back at that point.

We could put a campaign up on invis castle and do it that way ... then ALL rolls are recorded for each PC as we do them. Might save us 300 rolls and links each. And it's pretty cheat proof.

You are very correct on Hellish Rebuke, I figured I was missing something.

I've been thinking about it, and maybe you should roleplay it your way. I was just worried because we had two Lawful Good types in the party and I want this thing to run smoothly. Just me being nervous about a new campaign.

Are you certain that you want to start with no equipment? I know that you don't need most things and at the worst you won't be able to make opportunity attacks, but I just want to make sure.

I've decided to use Fallcrest campaign setting from the DMG. You don't need to have read it, and if you haven't, don't. Your character is not from the region. We'll stick with the waking beneath a body of water and then wandering, but not for years, just days. Then you met a halfling merchant caravan heading to the town of Fallcrest in the Nentir Vale. The halflings were intrigued by you and proving sentient and not hostile offered to allow you to travel with them to the Vale.

The Halfmoon clan of halflings also had a pair of Dragonborn with them, acting as guards. While the halflings greeted you with a friendly curiosity, the Dragonborn eyed you with respect. You quickly learned from the halflings that the Dragonborn were also strangers to Fallcrest, and were keen on Bahamut.

Let me know in spoilers how open you intend to be with the dragonborn, and what sort of information you'd like to glean from the halflings.

Spoiler:
Ok Chris, bear with me because this is my first 4E game.

Why are your hp's 25? I got 12 + 12 Con = 24.
Please choose an energy type for your breath weapon.
It looks like you have 21 gp left after buying gear.

I've decided to use the Fallcrest campaign settiing from the DMG. It's ok if you've read it, but if you haven't, don't. You are not from Fallcrest or the surrounding Nentir Vale, but from an undisclosed region southeast of it. I'll leave the personal background up to you and give you the basics of how we're starting.

You and the paladin decided to journey to the Nentir Vale based on legend of the relics of Bahamut left there by the fallen Nerath Empire (If you have a more personalized reason, I'm open to it). Both of you joined on as guards for the Halfmoon halflings, merchants whose caravan was heading back to Fallcrest, the largest town in the Vale.

The only event of note along the way has been the addition of a strange wanderer. A humanoid formed of blackened metal was found travelling along the road. Red stone highlights accent his sharp features. He has two sweeping horn crests on his head, and two spurs on his chin. His eyes are pitch black.

Despite the creatures ominous appearance, he seemed quite civil and the halflings cheerfully took to the thing that introduced itself as Demon. Perhaps it is somehow linked to the Tieflings, perhaps not. The halflings invited Demon to join the caravan, and now he is under you protection.

I've assumed that no matter what your character actually thinks of Demon, that you would treat him with respect, as the dragonborn are said to in the PH. If you don't wish to, let me know. Also let me know anything you want to learn from the halflings, as well as how close you want to get to Demon during the journey.

Spoiler:

Okay, I re-read the Infernal Pact section, or I should say my roommate did, and it says BEFORE the pacts, that this counts as one of your two At Will Powers, so I was incorrect. Read out of context, it is misleading. So I dropped Eyebite.
I'll go with how I was going to play it. It'll be fun, but I won't tear the group up.
We have also made an extremely balanced Paragon path for a Warforged, and I'd like to present it to you. (Game design is something we do, lol). It's designed with Eberron flair, but that can obviously be changed easily. I'll e-mail it to you tommorrow, if you're interested.

Prankster - as I've told the others, I'm still new to 4E so forgive any oversight.

Spoiler:
Why is the damage for the flail 2d6+5? In 4E, as far as I know, you only get a bonus for using two hands if the weapon is versatile, which the heavy flail is not. Is there another source for this extra point of damage?

On your powers, why are the attacks at +7? I have +4 str +2 proficiency +0 level = +6

On Paladin's Judgement, where did you get "a miss doesn't expend use of this power"?

I've decided to use the Fallcrest campaign settiing from the DMG. It's ok if you've read it, but if you haven't, don't. Well, it's late and I just started looking at your character. I'll point out the ability score mistake and you can repost. I asked you to use the standard array (16, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10). You have:

Str - 10
Con - 14
Dex - 14 (12 +2 racial)
Int - 18 (16 +2 racial)
Wis - 15 (no 15 on the list)
Cha - 11

I assume the 15 is supposed to be 13, so adjust accordingly.

One more thing before I go to bed. If you haven't, please post your characters basic attacks, it'll save me time.

I'm still going to run the game on Paizo, and I still would like the pregenerated rolls. At Invisible Castle you can program it to do 50 rolls of 1d20 and link the results, and I don't think it's a huge hassle. So, like I said, do 50 rolls of each die and link it here.

I'll e-mail you that tommorrow and get the rolls up. Have to do that on a different computer for some reason, grr.

Basic Attack Ranged (Sling)
Dexterity vs AC: Dexterity check (1d20+2) damage 1d6

Background:
(This may conflict with Kava's account, once I've looked at that I'll alter mine accordingly)
Madresh and Kava, although born of different broods, have been friends since hatchhood. Kava was born from the brood of a famous Warrior and defender of the tribe however, while Madresh was born to a lowly farmer. A necessary job, but looked down on by the honourborn race.

When they reached 15 war was declared on a local Eladrin village. Objectively it was nothing more that a couple of skirmishes, but for the dragonborn youth, it was a chance for honour and glory.

While on the battlefield, Madresh was shocked at the ineptness of the commander (this was only a small village). His tactics and inspiration were all wrong. while I respect his seniority, this is going to get us killed thought Madresh.

This almost happened as Madresh was run through with a longsword, and it was only the quick actions of Kava that saved his life. Madresh vowed two things from that point on. He refused to see poor inspiration and poor tactics get his friends killed, even if he had to take that role himself.

Secondly, he now has a 'shell debt' to Kava. By the customs of the village, any dragonborn who owes their life to another gives them his shell, and only gets it back by repaying the favour twice over. Madresh felt no resentment at this, more, an eagerness to earn the respect of his friend by doing this. He set out to wherever Kava would go, waiting for an opportunity.

me too ... so I hope you will for give me too.

Why is the damage for the flail 2d6+5? In 4E, as far as I know, you only get a bonus for using two hands if the weapon is versatile, which the heavy flail is not. Is there another source for this extra point of damage?

my bad ... I had erroneously assumed that ALL 2H weopons get the +1.

On your powers, why are the attacks at +7? I have +4 str +2 proficiency +0 level = +6

silly me again. I had changed the basic attacks to +6 (when I switched to flail from sword) but forgot to edit it into the powers section

On Paladin's Judgement, where did you get "a miss doesn't expend use of this power"?

hmmm ... as I found the WotC released Dragonborn Paladin was similar to my build i cut-paste-edited for their formatting. I hadn't realised that they would change it so late in the day. I missed that - but of course you are correct

All have been edited into the sheet :^) apol's

Liberty's Edge

background - meta'Chris this encorporates some Madresh stuff so let me know what you like and want to change.

Spoiler:

Kava and Madresh shared a close bond since they were wyrmlings - Kava had always admired Madresh's keen an decisive mind and almost praeternatural ability to organise and execute their youthful pranks on their overly proud broodmates. One day however their youthful enthusiasm went too far and even Kava's normally jovial and winning personality could not talk them out of their punishment - military assignment.

This would be any Dragonborn child’s dream; Madresh longing to be free of his parents farm and Kava from under the harsh discipline of her Father. Reality however quickly asserted itself in the form of long hours of discipline polishing lieutenants’ armour and "KP" duty. But it was in military college that Kava found her heart - in the form of Bahamut the Protector. Here was a model of honesty, caring and justice that the humble Kava aspired to, and under the tutelage of Father Ghesh she studied theology and ethics. Plus with Madresh studying histories in the library she could read her stories about the great Paladin and his struggles with Tiamat in their rare moments off together.

A great turning point for Kava came when she turned 15. Kava and Madresh's unit were mobilised to a skirmish upon an unseelie encampment - a village of Eladrin and Fey said to be raiding the outskirts of the civilised Dragonborn lands. Expecting Eladrin warlocks allied with Formorians and Hags, Kava's squad was unprepared for what was a simple ambush by Eladrin rangers defending their village. Their commander full of bluster charged their close melee formation into the trees challenging them to a fight, but the better prepared Eladrin archers were clearly their betters. The two were separated during the melee until Kava saw Madresh stabbed through the torso by a longsword from behind (by a figure cloaked in what appeared to be spider's web cape) in whilst wrestling with a foe. Screaming his name Kava charged Madresh's adversaries as - like a shooting star - her flail flared bright above her. She doesn't remember much of what occurred after ... just flashes of battle before she pulled Madresh's body out to the edge of the forest. Calling desperately to Bahamut through waves of tears she received her first blessing and the warmth of healing coursed through hands wet with Madresh's dark blood.

Suspecting that the battle was a ruse, Kava has become a little quieter and brooding when alone. ... And has set off to find more meaning in her life than being a puppet to arrogant military exercises. Hearing that ancient relics of Bahamut may lie in the ruins of the fallen Nerath Empire in the Nentir Vale, Kava has travelled north and west. Currently down to her last gold piece she is journeying with a caravan of Halfmoon Halflings, jovial little gypsies, and is learning about the wider world from them (and is trying to learn to play the harp). She shares their food and shelter in exchange for guarding the caravan and tending their wounds. Adventuring on the road, with Madresh beside her, she is currently more at peace than she has been at any point in her life. But something in the back of her mind is whispering ... is this the calm before the storm?

Kava is interested in learning about Halflings view on religeon and ethics; the lay of the land (in general and where they are heading); rumours re: ruins and relics; and learning the harp in her spare time (which is just mucking about with the halflings over meals - I don't believe she'd be too good at it). I guess Amelia and I can nut out more esotric halfling stuff IC.

She also very intrigued about Demon, his race, the old construct-soul conundrum, (and why anyone would call themselves "demon")
but Brian and I can save that for the IC forum.

I'm sure she doesn't hold any grudges against Eladrin in general so no hard feelings towards cg'Chris' A'loran. There is one particular Elfblood however ...

Wow! I think I want to keep all of that, thanks a lot Heath! You put my backstory to shame. I think I should add to mine a little though.

Spoiler:
Madresh, despite his speices fierce reputation, is actually quite mellow outside of combat. He is particualrly interested in learning about his companions and what they can do.

Though he believes that tactics is secondary to inspiration on the battlefield (fire on the heart is better than words in the head, old dragonborn saying); he is nevertheless interested in getting his compatriots ideas on how they should do battle, so that no-one needlessly loses their life.

Madresh bears no particular hatred to the Eladrin. On the contrary, he admires their battle prowess, and the skill of their tactics, even if they occasionally lack honour.

Madresh is also curious about warforged. He has caught many references to them throughout old battle tomes, but he is unfamiliar with them face to face. He wants to know if they are as deadly as the legends suggest.

He has no special attitude towards halflings, apart from mild disapproval at their sneaky tactics. Still, he repects how deadly one can be with the correct application and hopes to teach his village the idea of stealth (since Madresh himself has no truck with it, neither does 99% of the village either)

Hi everyone, this is Amelia (which is also my IRL name, and I'm from New Hampshire). I've got my rogue finally done under a board alias, since putting the stats in the profile makes easy editing later :)

Sorry it took so long, feats had me debating a ton of them. There were about 8 that fit my idea!

I'll have to get the dice rolls done soon, in the next day or so.

thanks Amelia (Brianna looks cool)
Now that Kava's stats are something like approved I'll post with this alias

Thanks Chris ... Kava's backstory was a complete rip of yours though :^D couldn't have written it without you (though I did do it without sleep). BTW where is the button in Invisible Castle to roll eyes - did you do x50? ;^)

Madresh is ready to roll (though not eyes, he is beginning to run out ;^) )

Glad to have someone trained in the art of stealth with us (it's really tempting to elongate all the ess's but that would get tired fast). I will be questioning how you do it once we're IC ;^)

Spoiler:
Looks good, and just a couple of questions.

What languages did you take?
I assume you have leather armor, based on the bonus to AC. It wasn't in gear.
You're also going to want to add crossbow bolts and your gold to your gear.
And you didn't add your ability bonuses to your basic attacks and damage.
Also, your AC is correct, but the Dex bonus listed there is wrong.

I'm using the Fallcrest Campaign setting from the DMG. It's ok if you have read it, but if you haven't, don't. You are from the town of Fallcrest which lies in the center of the Nentir Vale. You are cousins with the Halfmoon clan of halflings, a far-flung family of traders. Recently you accompanied one of the caravans outside of the Vale. Sadly it was a boring trip and now the caravan is heading back.

The caravan took on a couple of dragonborn guards on the return trip. There is also an eladrin that has joined the caravan. While the Vale occasionally sees travellers of these types, their joining is still noteworthy. The single actual event of the journey happened just recently when the caravan came upon a strange traveller, a humanoid made of metal that calls itself Demon. Nobody had seen anything like the warforged, as one of the dragonborn called it. The halflings were quick to invite Demon to join the caravan, once it proved to not be hostile and, in fact intelligent.

This still leaves room for any personal background and personality you want to post. Let me know of any questions you have about the town or anything else.

Time zones are, IMHO, utterly irrelevant. I play in 3 games with Aubrey who's in Great Britain, Kruelaid who's in China, and Mothman who's in Australia, and I'm in the REPUBLIC OF TEXAS (gyoik)!

I can't think of one time where it's been an inconvenience.
