Playtest Credits

Alpha Release 3 General Discussion

Scarab Sages

Dear Paizo Staff,

It is the fondest hope for this Paizonian that you credit my fellow community members in the upcoming Beta and Final PRPG.

As has been noted, in several incarnations of D&D, playtester and designer names have been dropped from production credits (Sean K. Reynolds has discussed this issue in depth on his website).

The community deserves the recognition I am sure you will give, but I would like to hear from the mouth of the publishers: is this planned?

Thanks for the opportunity to build a new generation of adventure!

I suspect there'll be a line about "the Paizo messageboard community" as a whole. They could name each messageboard member by name, but that would take a lot of pages...

I agree with Misanpilgrim. I don't want a couple of pages of screen names, and if they did, guaranteed that they would miss some and then we'd have to listen to the whining about that...

Perhaps a broad statement in the print copy, and a link to a site on the boards that lists everyone by name as a compromise. It would at least be updatable if someone raised a fuss. 'Course that's even more resources spent on website design and less on developing Golarion.

Scarab Sages

Maybe they could release the list of playtesters as a downloadable web supplement ;D

Actually, if I may cast humility aside for a minute, it would be great if all the persons who have contributed time and energy to this endeavor receive an individual playtesting credit.
If small print is used for this, it should not take up too much space.

Yes, it makes a lot of sense to put 10000 names in a book. Maybe listed in order of post count?

How about instead we all just enjoy the fact that there is a company out there that actually listens to what their customers want. To me the fact that they incorporated a change or fix we suggested is a much bigger compliment than having my name on a list with 10000 other people who happened to download the Alpha.

Hey there all,

We are hoping to do some sort of credit for the final product. I am not 100% sure how this is going to work yet though as I am a little concerned about trying to fit 5k-10k names in the book.

I will get back to you on this.

Seriously, are you going to read through the list of names just to highlight your own? it's not as if they can credit names for what they contribute since often times the same idea is proposed by multiple people. A little paragraph thanking the paizo messageboards is all they should need.

As long as you make sure mine is in bold we'll be fine.

Scarab Sages

I think Daeglin might be on to something about a locked thread with everyones names, standing for all time (at least until the internet collapses).

The idea is that they acknowledge the community as a whole though. Heck, even a mention in the foreword by Monte or Jason would kick butt.

We also can't forget to list the entire Smurf village roster :)

I'd rather that then a list of messageboard names, I'd love it if in the credits a special thanks went out to papa smurf for all the smurf goodness he brought to us.

of course I wind up as smurfette

Scarab Sages

And a big fat "No Thank You" to Gargamel!

I suggest on one page in a very very small font. ;)

They can do amazing things with microdots, these days.

Have you ever seen the one-volume unabridged Oxford Dictionary? The one that comes with a free magnifying glass?

I was thinking about that... and then we could sell the "GameMastery Brand Electron Microscope"... it would be quite expensive, but well worth it to see your name in print...

And it could come with cheese! Mmmm... cheese...

My humble suggestion would be for Paizo to have a special web page under the Pathfinder RPG section that acknowledges the names. It is less expensive and far easier to implement, yet no less meaningful.

I know that the "Thanks to Jason" is in another thread but I would like to personally thank you Jason for your efforts regardless of the outcome of the playtest credits go.

And I would like to also state how jealous I am. I would far rather be working in the RPG industry than writing computer programs for whiny and ungrateful Ph.Ds, but alas my talents are towards the latter. I did co-author an RPGA module once (which was a lot more fun than playing in RPGA :-P )

You could make a special Game Mastery™ certificate that we could all download, print, frame and paste next to our university diplomas to recognize our astounding playtesting accomplishments and annoy our spouses :).

I will reiterate that I demand playtest credits. Jason stole all my best ideas.. really.. I can prove it... just look at Jason, he's got guilty all over him! :)

j/k

Personally I don't see how you can possibly credit people in an open playtest without offending other people. Save a tree or a page, don't waste the space.

Over 20,000 individuals have downloaded at least one of the three Alphas already!

Takes 30 seconds: Open PDF version, make a text search for your name, look where it is, open the book, BAM.

Scarab Sages

Wouldn't the fact that many of us post under an alias (or several dozen aliases, eh Aberzombie...?) make any credit list rather bizarre?

Sovereign Court

I'm gonna open 12 knew accounts all variations on lastknightleft so I can see my name credited 12 times yay.

Scarab Sages

With some careful planning, you could put in a secret code, so when someone reads all of your screen names, they get a secret message telling them to buy 4th Edition instead.

Oh crap, I like Pathfinder. I take it back! It was a joke!

Yeah, but, honestly, who really reads the list of playtesters in books, anyway?

Not to say that some sort of acknowledgment would be a bad thing, just that most people don't actually read it.

Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

Actually put them all in a big grouping on a page, so that if you stare at it long enough, you see a 3-D image of the Pathfinder P.

Or Seoni...meeeeeeowwwwww.

I do, just so I can see who to be envious of. Or maybe just because of what my wife claims, that I have an OCD-like thing making me automatically read any words that are put in front of my face.

I'm fairly certain that just a broadly worded "thank you to the messageboard community" is all that is needed. Our contributions (numerous as they are) still pale in comparison to the amount of work and energy that the developers have put into the product. (Not to mention the amount of work needed just to read the message boards now and then).

Contribute for the betterment of the game, and not for personal glorification :)

Let's test that.

Roast beef
Bananas
The Medusa Cascade
BANG!

Cool—I totally owned your mind for a second there!

I'm with you here! I would be much more glad (a freakin' lot more!) if some of the changes I've suggested appeared on the Final Edition than having my screen name appear amongst other 10000 names with a size 2 font in a downloadable web supplement.

I would prefer to have more pages of content than a "thank you page".

I think this idea:

Is best.

*jots down new adventure idea about a curse that originates with a Medusa that threatens to turn everyone on the planet to stone, unless the PCs intercede of course*

Thanks Vic ;)

Seriously. Don't need it in the book. Steals room that could be used for more Pathfindery goodness.

Maybe after the final goes gold they could come back and round up all the folks who playtested and posted on the boards and give them a Pathfinder Playtester tag next to their names and their subscriptions. Just a thought.

That sounds neat. I wonder how much trouble it would be to check if an account has downloaded the Alpha/Beta and add that tag.

I don't think a playtest credit is necessary; just calling it:

hogarth's Pathfinder Role-playing Game (featuring Monte Cook)

should be good enough for everyone, I think.

Or just insert your name on the cover when you personalize the PDF.
