Heroforge Pathfinder Alpha

Alpha Release 3 General Discussion

Is anyone around here working on a Pathfinder-specific Heroforge build?

I've been studying Excel quite a bit over the last couple of months and have learned quite a bit, though I'm not to the level necessary to attempt to build one myself (or maybe a really crude one). I'm wondering if anyone else has the necessary knowledge and is already working on it, or planning to start soon. If so, I'd be happy to help out. I'd be happy to do most of the grunt work like data-entry. I've got some time (I'm a teacher and Summer break is almost here.)

Given that Pathfinder is still very much fluid and the heavy amount of work that goes into one, there probably isn't that much enthuisasm for it yet.

One thing you should know, the removal of Visual Basic from the new editions of Excel for Windows and Mac, ( not that it meant much on the Mac no version newer than 4.04 was ever stable on the Mac side) pretty much puts the stake through the heart of Heroforge. I'd encourage that someone go the Filemaker route myself, it's much better at creating records.

I would recommend that if you are thinking of starting, work from the earlier editions like 4.04 or earlier. Then you won't have to deal with spreadsheets that have 20 megabytes or more of stuff you won't be using that will just bog your work down.

Actually, it's only the new Mac Excel 2008 release that had VBA support removed; it's going strong in the Windows version. Additionally, Microsoft announced that VBA would return to the Mac in the next release, though that's more than likely at least a year away.

Regardless, it's moot, as the HeroForge team have announced the upcoming version for 4e will not require a third-party application.

Unfortunately, while there is a build that supports the first Pathfinder Adventure Path (with feats and such), I don't think that they'll be doing anything for the actual Pathfinder RPG. I've started a Pathfinder RPG poll on the HeroForge site just to see what interest there is.

Thanks for the advice. That's pretty much what I was hoping someone would try to do and that I could help out, if needed. I figured it would be easier to just take an existing copy of Heroforge and strip out most of the classes, then make changes to the PHB base classes and races to bring them up to Pathfinder rules. Though, admittedly, I really have no idea how much work that would be, I'm hoping that that would be a lot less difficult than building from scratch because everything is there, some things just need to be removed or altered.

Thanks for that. When I say a "Heroforge-build" though, I don't mean in the sense of working with the talented guys from Heroforge, LLC. I mean in the more open-source sense of the phrase "Heroforge-build." My understanding is, we could even call it "Heroforge" as long as we're not charging for it. I'm looking for fellow Paizo/Pathfinder fans to work on a little project. If I wanted official support for this, I'd have posted on the Heroforge boards about it. Am I incorrect? Is Heroforge a protected property, therefore people cannot legally edit and re-release it?
