[THINK TANK] Sorcerer Bloodlines - Balance

Races & Classes

Liberty's Edge

This thread is for the purpose of identifying and correcting potential imbalances between the sorcerer bloodlines. Jason has already acknowledged the error I found in which the Abyssal bloodline grants Intimidate as a class skill, even though the sorcerer already has it as a class skill. Jason is working on coming up with a replacement skill for this.

It has been pointed out by many posters that the bloodlines need to be balanced against each other, most recently here:

A few of the abilities still make you wonder. One bloodline [Celestial] grants wings usable 1 min per level per day and another [Infernal, Draconic] grants unlimted use of wings.

Fey 1st level touch is once a day for 1 round effect while the Corrupting Touch lasts for several rounds.

I think a little look at these similar abilities between bloodlines and balancing them to a more uniform set of standards would smooth over a bit of the bumps that remain.

So, after you've looked over the bloodlines and played with them a little, what inequalities or imbalances do you notice?

What can we do to fix these?

I just wanted to stress this part. Rampant speculation without playtest info is not of much use to me in this regard.

Hmm, I guess my post got eaten.

I'm sure this has been mentioned, but I think Diplomacy should be added to the Sorcerer list. I can threaten to shove a fireball down your throat, but can't negotiate well for my party because it's not a class skill.

Other than that I'm looking forward to playtesting.

My thoughts on the balance issues (just on first glance), is that similar abilities should be equal. The fly example is a good one. If Draconic and Infernal get unlimited use of wings, then so should Celestial *UNLESS* celestial gets an added bonus while using their wings... say, inspire awe effect or something.

As for the touch abilities, thats a little harder to compare. Different status effects grant different bonus/negatives. These effects may be more or less powerful, affecting the duration. Obviously, this particular point needs playtesting and facts, but the flying i think is a stand alone point.

Something in me is deeply offended that a 15th level Infernal Sorcerer can fly 24/7 and a 15th level Celestial Sorcerer can only fly for 15 minutes.

The problem is that Celestials get wings at 9th and Infernals and Draconics get it at 15th. Thus, the Celestial Wings necessarily need to be weaker. Easy house-rule fix I intend to use: Celestial Wings are 1 minute per level until 15th when they operate in the same way that Infernal and Draconic wings do.
