Hey there,
I don't know if it's already reworked, but I always thought that riding in combat is way to roll intensiv and too complicate.
My solution:
RIDE
Control Mount: If you "ride" into combat, you must make a Ride check to control your mount and guide it into your chosen direction. The DC for this check is 10 for combat-trained mounts and 20 for any other.
(+5 if the mount is not well suited for being a mount).
If you succeed on your check you need one hand to control your mount and can use one hand for other actions, if you fail your check you must use both hands for riding.
MOUNTED COMBAT
Prerequisite: Trained in Ride skill (or min. Ranks 4)
Benefit: You get a +10 bonus on your Ride check to control your mount in combat. Additionally, you always need one hand less to control your mount in combat (no hands if successful, one hand if unsuccessful).

I personally never felt this feat so great before,
so actually I don't care what would happen to the "old" use.
But I think the "new" feat is somehow more about actual MOUNTED COMBAT.
I just looked at the skill text in 3.5 and would suggest to put the "old" use of Mounted combat instead of the text for "Guide with knees".
Since that was substituted from the new feat and skill use.
As with any combat riding action I would set a DC for wartrained mounts and rule under the "Specials", that a non-combat mount increases those DCs by 10 and any mount not suited for carrying a rider (like bipeds) impose a -5 check penalty.
BTW, the DCs and bonuses of my first post have to adjusted, I think.

I agree that the "Fight with Warhorse" and "Control Mount in Battle" should be made into one text.
But one a +10 is a bit much, and the loss of the original ability of Mounted Combat is unappealing. Being able to perform the little trick of changing AC for a Ride on your mount is far more useful then the +10. Because honestly your mount is going to die first, its usually far more vulnerable than the rider. (Unless its a really low level PC on the back)

And rolling this into the skill as a normal use is no good then?
As I said I think mounted combat has not that much to do with... well, mounted combat.
Hmm... Maybe we should combine the old and the new feat.
I mean the part with getting hands free for combat...
I don't know... +10 seems a bit too much. You know, I would roll Ride and Handle Animal under the same category *but* as separate skills. Something like Handle Animal (Animal Training) and Handle Animal (Ride).
