(*Sigh*, once again the forum ate my post... it's too long to rewrite it all, but here's a "synopsis"):
What if *ALL* Feats in the game (and the new ones) would be categorized under "feat types" (i.e. Combat, General, Arcane, Divine, Primal, Shadow) in a similar fashion that 4E treats those "Power Sources"? Every class would get access (i.e. as an automatical Class Feature) to *two* "Feat Categories" *but* you could also spend a "Training Feat" (e.g. "Shadow training"/"Lesser Shadow Training") to gain access to more categories, *but* only for feats meant for 1-10 level. Of course, you'd get "full" access to categories by multiclassing. For example, a ranger (in addition to General feats) might have access to Combat and Nature, while a barbarian could pick his Feats from Combat and Primal categories?
I was also toying with the idea that there would be some sort of "Background Feats" in the game, which would either give you skill bonuses/new class skills (a bit boring), *OR* access to Heritage/Cultural/Racial Feats (note: each race would have "full" access to their own Racial/Cultural Feats). For example, if your fighter grew up among a barbarian tribe, he could spend a feat to get "Primal Training" (i.e. level 1-10 feats). Another example: your elven "Fey-blooded" ranger who was born (and raised) in shady streets of a city could spend two feats to get access to "Fey" and Shadow categories (again, for 1-10 level Feats).
