Oh ye of little faith.

Human

Level up he says.

Spoiler:
I'm not going to go into a psychedelic trance in the middle of the street.
How would you like me to handle this one?

Male

For Rev. Rosey

Spoiler:
Add a new level mechanically, but you do not gain access to new spells until you have taken time to explore your inner world and commune with Persephone and Demeter.

I am off to bed. I have my meatspace D&D game on Sunday, and have some exams to make for my science classes. I may not be able to post at all on Sunday as a result.

I am new to running games in this format. Feel free to give any feedback about what works for you and what you find restrictive or annoying.

I have learned a few things from what we have done so far, and would like to propose the following systems and changes.

1 we should number our own posts. If my last post was 3, this should be 4, and so on. That way, if someone's post is eaten by a grue, we will know.

2 I would like to have all of you post your leveled characters here like Rev Rosie and Kruelaid did.

3 I want six perception checks, six d20 rolls for multiple use, and six attack and damage rolls here on this thread, so that I can roll a d6 to select one when needed.

4 I will try to get a grid on my maps so that we can use cartesian coordinates if it ever becomes necessary to measure area effects and ranges.

5 I would like you all to post a bit of your future intentions in some of your threads so I can improvise better. I am not running this game, you all are.

Have a great weekend.

Taliesin Hoyle.

Upgraded and improved Isat to follow. What are your views on undead and influencing them? It wouldn't hurt to have that ability in the party.

Male

Are you thinking of going cleric? I noticed your "vile hybrid" remark from earlier, and can understand if you want to simplify things by taking a core class. That said, I rather like the adept with modifications, because clerics are very powerful in a game like this. If it is a mythic Roman game, adepts are already capable of feats beyond human ken.

If you want to move to cleric, turn undead can be yours. Rebuke is not really appropriate, and I don't think I would let NPC clerics (should such prodigies exist) have the ability either.

Could you see a way to keep cleric low key?

I would also ask that you play as a cloistered cleric, because armour and mace is a bit later on...

If you go druid, I would again, strip a few powers out and keep the casting core.

What I would personally feel most comfortable with would be "Adept with better skills and bonus feats as per wizard."

It is, however your character and I will respect and integrate any decision you make that does not involve smur[ooc][/ooc]fs

Human

"Adept with better skills and bonus feats as per wizard."

To be honest this works well for me too. Would you be happy with me taking the wizard class spell levels, which in this case would give me 5 - 0 level spells and 4 1 level? Technically at level 2 an Adept can summon a familiar, but gets no further spells. It's your call though and I'll roll with whatever you want to do. In the immediate circumstances, I can't see Isat summoning a familiar, he's already pretty freaked.

If we're using wizard feats then he can already scribe scrolls, although quite how that works in this game is a mystery. Ideas appreciated on that one too.

I really like Adepts in some ways and the spell range is quite funky since it covers several bases without school restrictions. If Isat survives to the point that spells above 5th level become an option, we'll need to revisit it.

"Vile hybrid" referred to the skills issue, not using Adept class. I'm sorry to bore the pants off everyone with all the fiddling, but the game so enjoyable I'd rather try and get stuff right for it.

Absolutely no smurfs. Ever. Promise.

Male

I just reread the Adept on www.d20srd.org and I am very happy with the class as written. When I said bonus feats as Wizard, I was thinking solely of the bonus metamagic feats at every fifth level. I forgot that familiar and scroll were also feats and not class features.

I like the adept spell progression. I see that the class is in some ways underpowered, but the 6+int skills, half price knowledges and fact that you are one of the only spellcasters in the country more than make up for it. You won't be dishing out damage, but the ability to heal is priceless in a world like 300 AD.

If you want a familiar, something Greek can be had as you see fit.
Would you like to have spontaneous casting as per:

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/spontaneousDivineCasters.htm

Or, perhaps the ability to cast cure spontaneously as per cleric?

About scrolls. Potions make more sense to me. Could maybe find your missing contact and get into some alchemy?

Thanks for your trust and flexibility.

Human

I really like the mixture of arcane and divine available through the Adept class. Spontaneous casting sounds like the way to go as well.

No familiar. Potions sounds ideal. Was planning to see if I could hunt down my missing contact and Craft (Alchemy) is already one of my butcher skills.

Very happy with all this.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Guh. Just updated my character sheet, but just saw the posting for the setup requirements and rolls. Taliesin you are doing a fine job PbPing this game. Kudos from a similarly new DM in the cyberspace posting format. I will endeavor to adjust my character sheet this weekend, unfortunately I do not get the weekend off, so I will be dodging surly consumers while also making sure my wife gets attention and spreading piles of undistributed mulch and burying Canna lily and Dahlia root clusters as well as tending the other posting responsibilities I have (at least my party is all coalescing in one place again) ...

Places to go to.

I am going to say that Constantinople has a sort of informal curfew. There are markets that go till late at night, and many other night time entertainments, but for the most part, they are in the heart of the city. In the outskirts, patrols and militias and neighbourhood watches will stop any suspicious group of people and ask questions.
There is a bewildering morass of conflicting jurisdictions and rules and some of the regulations are not enforced, while other things can get a man killed at the whim of an official. You will need to choose a place to go to.

Rev

Spoiler:

Isat has a small room above the baths with a fat loud b%@#* of a landlady that waddles up the rickety stairs to check on him.

Radavel.

Spoiler:

Hrothgar paid some silver to have a room on the third floor of a tenement right next to the old walls. He chose it because it is easy to overlook the door to the building, which is in an alley clogged with laundry. There are windows on the south and north walls, which look out at the streets on either side. It is whitewashed, but unfurnished, except for a straw mattress and chamberpot, and is about 15 foot square. The windows are both easy to climb in and out of. From the South window, someone like a barbarian warrior could leap onto the old wall, eight feet away. As a fugitive, finding a place like that was a stroke of luck. As an added bonus, the landlord is blind and nearly deaf.

Kruelaid.

Spoiler:

Although Modius is homeless, he is also streetwise and could find a place for everyone to lie low while they heal. The city also has catacombs and Sewers, which were used by Christians for a long time, and are still inhabited by some poor wretches. You have not yet explored these, however. Staying outside the city walls is also possible, but it is hard to get out after curfew. There is a thriving moorish and spanish neighbourhood close to the slave market and slaughterhouses, with a lot of people who hold great stock in nationality, and could be paid for a place to stay. Discretion on their part is more expensive than rent, however.

Gnaeus Cornelius Papyrus is a name that will open many doors after dark. Questions will follow, however.

Patrick.

Spoiler:
You forged deep and powerful bonds with the men you served with. There was a young legionnaire who fell in with a bad crowd in the VIth, and was charged along with them for rape in peacetime. He was castrated and flogged with them, took it hard and got into the poppy in a big way after his discharge. You know he is in the sprawl of tenements nearby, and would gladly help you. A mutual friend recently told you that Arrosus the eunuch has become a poet and artist and that his luck has turned. He appreciates you because you know he is innocent. His place is four blocks away down Via Concordat.
You have three other legion buddies in town, but none live alone or close.

Male Ostrogoth Barbarian 2

AppearanceRufinus is tall and lanky, with blonde stubble and pock marks on a broken nose. His eyebrows are almost non-existent from fist fights. His hair is shaggy and thick, framing a face that looks surprisingly child like and gentle behind the damage and scars. His build is deceptive, wiry and lithe, but he tends to shuffle and slouch, to look less threatening. His voice is clear and rich, with a husky edge caused by old illness. Despite his strength, there is obvious damage to his health caused by malnutrition and decades of physical abuse. His clothes are functional. trews of leather, cork soled sandals and a brightly coloured nubian poncho. Unlike many goths, he has no ritual jewelry or tattoos.

Rufinus carries his tools in a sack with him wherever he goes, and has a huge sledgehammer of bronze bound ash with an oak handle. His tradesmark is prominently carved on the stock.

Benefit On your action, before making attack rolls for a round, you may choose to subtract a number from all melee attack rolls and add the same number to all melee damage rolls. This number may not exceed your base attack bonus. The penalty on attacks and bonus on damage apply until your next turn.

Special If you attack with a two-handed weapon, or with a one-handed weapon wielded in two hands, instead add twice the number subtracted from your attack rolls. You can’t add the bonus from Power Attack to the damage dealt with a light weapon (except with unarmed strikes or natural weapon attacks), even though the penalty on attack rolls still applies. (Normally, you treat a double weapon as a one-handed weapon and a light weapon. If you choose to use a double weapon like a two-handed weapon, attacking with only one end of it in a round, you treat it as a two-handed weapon.)

Spoiler:

A barbarian can fly into a rage a certain number of times per day. In a rage, a barbarian temporarily gains a +4 bonus to Strength, a +4 bonus to Constitution, and a +2 morale bonus on Will saves, but he takes a -2 penalty to Armor Class. The increase in Constitution increases the barbarian’s hit points by 2 points per level, but these hit points go away at the end of the rage when his Constitution score drops back to normal. (These extra hit points are not lost first the way temporary hit points are.) While raging, a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except for Balance, Escape Artist, Intimidate, and Ride), the Concentration skill, or any abilities that require patience or concentration, nor can he cast spells or activate magic items that require a command word, a spell trigger (such as a wand), or spell completion (such as a scroll) to function. He can use any feat he has except Combat Expertise, item creation feats, and metamagic feats. A fit of rage lasts for a number of rounds equal to 3 + the character’s (newly improved) Constitution modifier. A barbarian may prematurely end his rage. At the end of the rage, the barbarian loses the rage modifiers and restrictions and becomes fatigued (-2 penalty to Strength, -2 penalty to Dexterity, can’t charge or run) for the duration of the current encounter (unless he is a 17th-level barbarian, at which point this limitation no longer applies).

A barbarian can fly into a rage only once per encounter. At 1st level he can use his rage ability once per day. At 4th level and every four levels thereafter, he can use it one additional time per day (to a maximum of six times per day at 20th level). Entering a rage takes no time itself, but a barbarian can do it only during his action, not in response to someone else’s action.

Thank you all. I will print these rolls out and use them if I really need to to keep things moving. I will also print out your character sheets. I know that Patrick, for one is busy in RL. I think all of us are professionals of one stripe or another, and this hectic a pace of posts could be an issue, so I would like to take an occasional break in pace during downtime, like is happening now. If I get too hasty, call me on it. I am having a lot of fun with this and may be going a bit overboard.

Taking all the above, plus a jar of leeches.

This is getting to be a bulky bag. I'll assume association with Modius and Hrothgar has lead him to build himself a kind of knapsack since it all gets used quite often. Plus his landlady is a nosey cow.

Human

Taliesin - I got Isat's hp wrong. He should have a magnificent 12 rather than the 8 you have currently - max hp at each level is correct?

Male

It is indeed. You may have noticed that I like to do gruesome things to characters on occasion. Max HP lets you all take more abuse. ;)

Seriously, a reduced healing game with intelligent opponents pretty much needs to max HP to stay afloat. It is one of the reasons I was so quick to advance you all to second level, so the fighters take more than one lucky shot to kill them.

PATRICK (this is double posted)

Arctaris had to bow out because my game is running a little fast for his schedule and he feels pressured.

You were interested, so I am asking you... but then that was before you started your own.

Fake Healer offered to take the spot and has the time but I just asked him to wait for me to check with you, first.

In Isat's case, he's only got to be unlucky walking through a low door and he's mincemeat.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Ah, must have missed the maxed HP memo, will retcon Paper's.

Couple o' questions:

Herald/Rob's original feats ... keep or toss?

Skills: You said Pathfinder-style .. that include the system or are we using the Pathfinder skills with 3.5 rank system?

I do appreciate the patience. This is a stressful time of year for me, as my business deals in outdoor products and construction. Ergo, once the grass turns green everyone wants a piece of my @$$. I am also trying to bring my playing skills up to snuff, and sometimes I will make huge errors. Please feel free to correct me if I goof. I do love the concept of the game, and I truly appreciate you stepping up to the plate to DM it Tal.

As a side note, I realize that my timezone is a little off of the standard. I have absolutely no problem with you taking any of those rolls I left and running Paper as a NPC. Gameflow is important, and I don't want to bog anyone else down.

I used Pathfinder consolidation with 3.5 point buy.

Male

Quite rightly so. About feats. If you like Rob's feats, use them. we have them on record here. If you want to change feats, do so. do what you need to to make things as you see them.

Thank you for the kind words. I went through a few PBP threads looking for tips and tricks. I was quite chuffed to see that ours is one of the best out there, in my opinion. You have great characters, and have been contributing immeasurably.

Radavel. Hrothgar is spot on. He doesn't say much, but when he does, it is great stuff.

Patrick. Paper's seriousness is a cool foil to the wit of the others. He strikes me as a very responsible and honourable man.

Isat is perfect. Rosey is breathing life into him in a rare and exciting way. Keep it up.

Kruelaid. Great period work. Most likeable rogue I have seen in a while.

Thank you all for letting me play with you.

Human

Speaking only for myself, the pleasure is all mine. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity as the new kid on the block. Who wouldn't want to wander round the dangerous waters of Constantinople with this lot?

You're doing a great job Taliesin and it's much appreciated.

Taliesin Hoyle wrote:

Awesome, don't pay attention to his alignment, I just sort of rolled with him. He just sort of came out of the wash as this bright and observant chap with a totally naive edge, especially in religious and social spheres. He's really changed though, after the fight (level in swashbuckler). My take on this is that he was terrified of confrontation before and the confidence he got from fighting in Paper's house has helped him realize he can clear his mind in those moments and be a deadly opponent.

And Isat must be the guy who keeps Hrothgar and Modius from getting into serious trouble.

With a grim faced business killer, Paper, and a kindly old barbarian (can't wait to see him rage - that's gotta be rare), we're quite the troupe.

Human
Kruelaid wrote:

That's how Isat started out in my head - the sweet talker who says "Maybe you don't want to do that" and sticks plasters on wounds.

He's taken on a life of his own though and the fight a Paper's changed a lot of things for him. Levi is using another type of arcane to anything he's seen. He also found some reserves of courage he didn't know he had and that's surprised him.

Don't count on Isat always making the sane choice - if there's knowledge to be had, he'll be wanting to follow that route however stupidly dangerous it is. At some point he's going to have to find a way to admit he's a bit more than a whizz with a hacksaw.

Moobetty poober!

Please ask any questions you may have about your options or resources in Constantinople in the discussion thread. In the game thread, please make your plans clear. I will adapt to what you all decide to do, and want to avoid railroading. It is pretty much up to you to decide your character's next actions. Levi and Rufinus are out of the picture. I want you all to know what you intend before they come back into focus.

Levi will want to get his wife from the graveyards.
Modius has a location to investigate.
Rufinus will meet at midday, at Hagia Sophia.
Paper's house is damaged.
Isat has a contact he has never met, one Stratos Kopteros.
Hrothgar needs to keep a low profile.
Levi mentioned wealth, knowledge and power for the taking.
Rafi is probably looking to tie up loose ends.
Alcaeus may have been taken into custody by the legion.
Zalmoxis's body has probably been taken by Rufinus to a temple.
You all need clothing and food.

Where is Isat's room in relation to Hroth's? If it's close, he'll go home, find something decent to wear, ask if any messages have been left for him, hope that none of them involve hidden assassins under the bed and start looking for Stratos Kopteros.

Do Modius or Paper know any lawyers or notarys?

If they don't where would he think of asking as an obvious first step?

Let's start with that and see how we go. In general, he's going to want to link up with Rufinus, make sure he's supplied to the gills and talk at length to Levi once he's awake and able.

At some point in the course of this busy morning, he will also eat.

Isat's room is about twenty minutes walk uphill to the bathhouse. It is next to the Hippodrome, and is frequented by many of the people involved in the games. Your nosey b*&&~ of a landlady will ask you a lot of questions if she sees you go in. She is usually hanging out in front of the building, next to the stairs that go to your room.

Paper is familiar with the notaries. When you describe the man you are looking for, he remembers seeing a persian notary with thick hair, and
large eyes, from a trip he took to the courts with his brother to claim some damages safely a few months before his brother left 'nople.

Among other things, I need to change my lodgings. "Oooh, Mr Vastra what have you been up to now? The state of your room, Mr Vastra is shameful. I shall have to charge extra you know." Too much of that and he may forget his Hippocratic Oath. Anyway, he won't go there - it's a silly place.

OK. In that case, he'll find himself something decent to wear, get some breakfast and ask Paper to come with him to the courts to see if they can find Stratos K.

EDIT: Of course if Paper himself wants to go and see what's happened at the villa or pay last respect to Zalmoxis and so on, Isat would be happy to tag along and they could possibly combine all this. I'm good with whatever anyone else wants to do really, just playing speculative games here.

Modius needs to buy a new cloak and patch his armour.

He wants to go check out the prelate and question the ox-cart driver.

Alernatively, he suggests that they all relocate to a new city. Problem solved.

Human

You think this bunch would be less likely to get into to trouble just by moving?

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Tal, I have to move away from the 'puter for a bit. I will endeavor to check in on developments later on. I am fortunate as this fight is brewing on my day off. I will be on later, hopefully in a few hours.

Thank you for letting us know.

Human

Had ten minutes off from my first aid course and am now returning to it. How appropriate. Won't be around to post again for another several hours, if you need to NPC Isat for wound healing, go for it.

Hello everyone. I am sick from overwork. I will start up the PBP again on Wednesday. I need rest. I will still post a bit on the boards. I will also answer questions on this thread. I just need a break while I recover. It is exam time, and I am a bit swamped.

Feel free to chat in character on the thread. No threats are immanent, and you can plan your next big step.

Things to remember:

Levi's wife is hiding out, waiting for her husband in the graveyards outside the new Theodosian wall.

Rafi is at large.

Hrothgar is wanted.

The Goths threw down a gauntlet to Juvenus.

Juvenus spends time at the baths.

A churchman is involved: One Carpus Thanasius was supposedly the master of Alcaeus, the man with the pulped face on the rooftop.

Modius: You knew Rafi and his men.
Paper: Your identity is known to them. Your house is damaged. You have a letter to write today.
Isat: Stratos Kopteros is your tie to the order, and can probably help you all if you find him.
Hrothgar: There is a reward for you. Only a few Goths know your face.

What are you going to do next? I will find out on Wednesday.

Thanks Tal, sometimes it's hard to keep track of all the cookies a DM gives.

Hope you feel better soon.

Take care, Taliesin.

I will be fine. The heat has started, as you both know. My school has arctic airconditioning. going from 30 to 20 to 30 is what got me sick. I am exhausted though.

Thanks for the concern.

You are all able to play without a DM, as you see fit. Take the chance to get an idea of your direction as a group. I like to adapt and respond to players' choices and plans, rather than dictating things through NPC's and such. Don't wait for prompts.
